*Conspiracy theory*

Assuming the Vita versions are untouched, what if Sony is censoring PS4 games to make people move to the PS5?

PS4 versions = gimped
PS5 = uncensored

It's unheard of but what if this is all part of a plan?

"There won't be any mysterious white lights. We will try to go as far as we can without them." Then... game is censored in ways that don't involve white lights. When pressed on it, developers clarify that
  1. they didn't technically say it "won't be censored", they just confirmed it wasn't with white lights
  2. they sympathize with the fans, didn't do this out of their own volition, don't agree with this and will try and find other ways to release the game uncut

Happened with Arc of Alchemist (no prior version released, but existing pre-release images and a suspicious delay), Nekopara (existing PC/Switch version)... and now...

I wonder if this will push Atlus to port their games to PC. Persona 5 sold north of 2 million, so let's assume that there are that many Atlus fans on the PS4 userbase. If a large portion of that audience migrates to PC, then that's a whole lot of money Sony will miss out on for Atlus's future titles.

Hypothetically speaking, if ATLUS is forced to alter Catherine and were they to create a PC port, I'd suspect the content would be identical to the PS4 release.

ATLUS' immediate focus remains the Japanese market, and until/unless PC gaming shows significant growth in Japan, I wouldn't expect the company to concurrently create content-superior versions of any of their games for the PC. If Sony's new policies are deemed troublesome, I'd more readily see them shifting titles to a competing console platform, which at the moment would probably be the Switch (or whatever Nintendo intends to do as a follow-up or upgrade).

Atlus will never put their games on PC, they seem to hate PC for some reason and thats why there is zero Atlus game on PC to this day, its more likely that they will put their future games on the Nintendo Switch since they have a great relationship with Nintendo for many years.

The Catherine statements don't clear anything up. Saying "We went as far as we could go without the light shining" doesn't mean much if we don't know how far they can go. We can't compare to previous games since the policies have changed. For all we know "going as far as we could" might not be nearly as far as they previously went, lol.

I'm not confident about Catherine at all. That "we love you" response worries me, it's like they are signalling it is censored or that they can't commit to it being uncensored as it could be altered between now and release.

For Sony to get on my good side again they'd need to do what Nintendo did and make a effort to show they are not censoring games. I'm still shocked at how far Nintendo went to alleviate my fears after all the censorship of games like Fire Emblem Fates and Tokyo Mirage Sessions.

Yeah, Catherine sounds like it is mostly likely going to be compromised. All bets are definitely off. On a more positive note Kill la Kill is getting a switch version so hopefully that's a viable option if it actually doesnt run like ass.

I think Sony will never do what Nintendo did, there is a difference between Nintendo and Sony censorship. Fire Emblem Fates and Tokyo Mirage Sessions was censored by an SJW american localizers that dont hold any power within Nintendo itself, they just lied to their Japanese bosses and told them that the censorship is what western gamers want, Nintendo's Japanese branch always held all the power and they are the only ones making the decisions from 1889 until now and they never censored their games or third party games in japan and censored only their games in the west, while with Sony's case the top people now controlling the Playstation brand are SJW westerners and they are censoring japanese games not because they want to protect the children like Nintendo but they are doing it out of spite and to push their agenda ( violence and gore, manly ugly women, gay relationships in games) and since japanese games are the only games that still cater to straight males which considered a mortal sin by the SJWs so they are trying now to destroy those games from the source (Japan).

One more thing about white lights...

The one game that used them got an update patch that replaced all scenes that used them with redrawn CG that doesn't use them. As for why would the developer even update that content for that censored version, many possibilities raise to mind

  • Sony hates the Japanese market for these games (why there's a policy at all, that doesn't use the local CERO guidelines that the Japanese public was involved in suggesting improvements for, and shaping in general) and hates their developers (why the approval process is in English suddenly while other countries have it in their local languages like German or French or whatever, why only Japanese developers have to worry about rating the game TWICE, why it's drawn out with unexpected delays and no appeal process to cause as much damage possible to developers than depend on those releases to survive, and why Western developers get away with more)... but not enough to hate their money, so they don't want the censorship to be too obvious.

This is the most correct answer, SJWhores HATE Japan, Japanese homogenous culture and they wished to censor it for all eternity, now with Sony, they got their chance.
And of course like all instances of get woke, Sony will go broke.

Persona 5 sold 2,5 million games on PS4 alone, that is 2,5 million Persona/Atlus fans, a bit south of $700.000.000, that's a lot of money, and not only Atlus fans, there are Asian fans and fans of Sony that love their Japanese output.

All of us are going to be happy to make the Switch to PC. (<--- haha)

Regarding Nekopara volume 1 just look at this mess:

1. Ps4 (edited scenes, missing ero scenes)
2. Switch (unedited scenes, missing ero scenes)
3.Steam (unedited scenes, missing ero scenes)
Sekai published the titles above
4.non-DRM Windows version by Denpasoft (unedited scenes, included ero scenes)

A free uncensor patch for Steam version exists that copies contents of Denpasoft in case you dont want to buy two versions.

Same for v2 and 3. Though now some games on Steam allow paid uncensor dlc.....

It is Denpasoft that should be supported, not Switch or Steam

I was really worried Nintendo would got the direction Sony is. Remember "culturalization"? That word scared the hell out of me. I seriously thought Nintendo was going to bring NOA into the development process because of articles pushing culturalization as a necessary step. Boy am I surprised that Nintendo brushed it all off and courted games like Gal*Gun to the Switch.

This is one of those times where I love Nintendo for not following industry trends and just being Nintendo. They seem relatively unaffected by the melt down going on in gaming around them. No strong push for censorship, no crapping on gamers, no changing company policies or emphasis on China like some are doing now. Hopefully it stays that way, Nintendo has a good thing going with the Switch.

I don't think Sony is just blocking games out of spite. There's nothing wrong with gay relationships or characters not being ideal beauty standards. I suspect it's more along the lines of prepping the PS5 for China or something. I wonder if Sony is fully committing to gaming in China and are doing what Ubisoft was doing with Rainbow six (Which Forbes wrote a good article about!). I guess we'll see if they start ramping up the censorship policies to hit bigger games in the next year. If we see any Ubisoft style moves we'll probably have our answer.

You raise a very interesting point.
Steam is still censoring some adult and "problematic" games.
The main reason for praise for them was that they don't purge all adult games on sight as standard policy anymore like they used to.

There are small independent PC storefronts for PC games but they're mainly infested with only adult games without much separation between general public content and lewd content (which is very much needed for practical reasons for public and developers engaging with the platform with console-like experiences) with some exceptions like Playism.
PC gaming with console-like experiences as geared for Japanese audiences experienced a surge in interest recently by major developers, like Square Enix (which sold SaGa Scarlet Grace on it, despite being Japan-only at the moment), Falcom (which had Xseed add full Japanese support to their Trails in the Sky ports) and Koei Tecmo, among others.

Anything can happen in the future, even Japan's own Uplay and Origin storefronts. If Playism managed an English version of their interface, anyone can with enough dedication.

I don't think Sony is just blocking games out of spite. There's nothing wrong with gay relationships or characters not being ideal beauty standards. Considering the developers seem to have cited a "Western standard", and that there is a Chinese localization of Mary Skelter 2 that was already censored to fit local Chinese regulations and yet Sony saw that as no good and asked them to cut some more to fit Sony's regulations on top of that, I strongly think they are two different things.

For the lols, there's one more thing that deserves mention. Resetera did a topic on Catherine, and it seems some users are upset Sony's censorship doesn't go far enough to include "transphobic" content on the chopping block, and very distressed at the thought the game will be "censored AND still transphobic", and upset that the developer "trying to go as far as we can" wasn't instead "trying the best we can to avoid suspicions of transphobia".

The transphobic content in question was mainly the lack of enthusiasm for sex one specific character has towards another trans character that hides their secret until the last possible moment, it doesn't matter that outside of that encounter they're still friends, the trans character not being perfect, and being named in the credits under all aliases this character has (so much like Catherine and Katherine).

Just in case it's said after this that no one, and no SJW ever proclaimed for this sort of censorship, and that it was only illegal porn for creeps and not tasteful storylines (...like Catherine?), here it is.

I dont think China has anything to do with this. Sony clearly have an SJW agenda and its more important than China money, do you know that China is one of the biggest countries against the inclusion of gay relationships in games and movies.

and what did Sony do? opening their E3 show with a long lesbian kiss. so sorry if i dont believe that Sony is censoring japan only games because of China.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's both. Sony could be cutting down Japanese games to focus on their western audience with current western trends like realistic violence, lgbt themes and photo-realistic characters while also looking into what they need to censor for China. I guess we'll see what Sony does with games like the Last of Us Part II. All these policy changes are only just now starting to become apparent. Who knows what will happen to bigger western games int the future. It's all to new to know.

Just to clarify, Sekai Project and Denpasoft are the same company, and any "free" adult patches for the Nekopara games are user created (to put things another way, they're pirated content).

Sekai Project is the main company, while Denpasoft was originally created as a subsidiary where the group could outright sell adult titles and adult-DLC patches. Putting aside the console versions of Nekopara, the all-ages versions of the games on Steam are sold for half the price ($10) of their adult counterparts on the Denpasoft site (priced at $20), with adult-DLC patches available for the remaining difference ($10).

I don't mean to advocate for any company or tell people what to do with their money, but it's always good to know who or what is being supported from a purchase.

----------

As for the impetus behind Sony's new censorship-happy ways, successful companies or divisions have a bad tendency to become bloated and overly bureaucratic. In reorganizing the Playstation unit and moving to California, I would not be surprised if this group responsible for content oversight grew unchecked by top management and now isn't something that can be readily disbanded.

Unfortunately, we already know this issue is getting no mainstream coverage, leaving complaints to exist at the level of niche outlets and social media, which at this point probably doesn't reach the ears and eyes of anyone who matters.

thanks, did not know that. Fortunately newer titles like Dizzy Demons offer DLC directly from Steam. Who knew that buyers today would have to pay extra to remove censorship

Sony’s Censorship Sets a Worrying Precedent - GameRevolution

Sony’s new policy comes out of left field and seems like an attempt to simplify the localization process and ensure that different territories feature the same content. They’re ironically only making the process more difficult for everybody. In a shortsighted move, Sony only allows Japanese developers to plead for approval of their game’s content in English. That’s right. Sony commands native developers to defend their game in a foreign language most people in the company probably don’t understand. This underhanded approval system is deliberately manipulative as it conjures a false sense of hope.
If you live in territories where content like this already gets censored in the first place, why should Japan’s censorship woes trouble you? Censorship is exactly why people import games from Asian territories. Games that would never see worldwide releases, like Moe Chronicle, even feature English subtitles. While we lose this safety net in cases of extreme censorship or cancellation, this policy could signal the beginning of a slippery slope.
Basically, Sony's policy may simplify the localization process, but it also greatly inconveniences Japanese developers. In addition, the reason why consumers import the Asian version of games is because either (1) those games are not available in the west or (2) they don't want to play the censored western version. The policy will, therefore, defeat the purpose of importation.

At least two characters (Pyra from Xenoblade 2, and Carmilla from Fire Emblem Fates) had most flesh covered up with black fabric in their artwork in Super Smash Bros Ultimate datamined from the recent game leak. It might be either to meet CERO's guidelines (like Smash for Wii U that got censored in a very similar way, but via an update, or before release in Tharja's case that was confirmed to be intact as late as ERSB submission in the NA release but completely purged from the released game) for a lower rating, or Treehouse shenanigans again.

Fire Emblem Three Houses goes back to the wait-and-see category, then.

Just these two were censored, besides Bayonetta's toned-down costumes that was already a thing in Smash Wii U, to the dismay of game journalists and some forums (who ask for all characters to be censored in Smash and their original games). This is Myrtha, but Pyra's design was unscathed. It might be a rating requirement after all.

Man kind of a shame about Mythra and Camilla. The later is among my favorite's lately. It doesn't disturb me as much as other times, but I still wish it didn't happen. I do wish however it that skin and our bodies weren't such a taboo thing for our civilizations, compared to violence which is apparently ok for our kids. Ah well.

As weird as it looking at, I can understand the reason behind this (E rating) though about "why kid should be banned for looking at grown women cleavage" should need further discussion with rating board in US and EU. It's very interesting If I can came to their HQ and discuss about this.

A PSP game by Idea Factory announced for localization... as a PC-exclusive.

Meanwhile, it seems there are some who want to see Bayonetta 3 covered up Iran-style (see pic below), or at the very least have one gay naked male character added in to try and offset the filthy tittilation Bayonetta herself provides. And of course, that the "only true censorship" is what Telltale employees were "forced" through when they were told by upper management their characters were too ugly for mass appeal, and that was a missed opportunity for atypical body types.

Nudity in Europe in context that doesn't involve sexual intercourse is tolerated by PEGI (for the record, Bayonetta is rated PEGI 16 there). On the other side, it's tolerated only in artistic contexts for an E rating for ERSB, and apparently (from Senran Kagura) will raise the rating to a E10/T for equivalent content as PEGI. CERO however started getting more and more restrictive about it.

So low cut women fashion in games considered nudity / sexual themes now by ESRB and PEGI? if not why that need to be censored in SSB in order to aquire E rating?

Yeah, that bayo thread was a real train wreck. Who's that in the pic?

They'll have to remove any mention of incest to get the game on steam, because that seems to be the main reason why they also couldn't get it on MiKandi Japan.
“Thanks for preparing the materials and your patience. Unfortunately, I have some bad news about Imolicious. MiKandi won’t be able to publish the game due to content restrictions and pressure from our billing partners (credit card companies). The CC companies actively monitor, flag, and order us to remove any content that contains sexual references to “sisters”, “incest” (even if implied or fantasized), as well as several other strong topics. In fact, we MiKandi Japan, were recently selling a “sister”-type Japanese hentai manga in the comic section which had to be taken down permanently.

“That said, our credit card partners, because we are an adult marketplace, do have the widest policies for us. (It’s great that we can sell some things that other places don’t). However… our billing partners are the strictest regarding this content. So because of that, we’re unable to sell Imolicious.”
https://www.oneangrygamer.net/2018/...on-nutaku-mikandi-due-to-incest-themes/72213/

This falls in line with what happend earlier this year where Patreon had to lock (almost ban) all devs of porn games with incest themes to change their games. It was already speculated back then that this happend because of the billing partners which don't want to associate with a certain type of content.

More bad news:. Senran Kagura 7even is being affected by Sony, it seems.

There does seem to be some implication that there's more than just Sony putting pressure against fan service as the article mentions anime and the upcoming Olympics making for a "pretty harsh time". Jeez, it almost sounds like there is hardly no one that will stand up for anything sexy anymore. I hope this is being blown out of proportion.

It's precisely the worst-case scenario I had in mind when we first heard about the Sony shenanagans : either the game won't get release as originally envionned by Takaki, or the game will get stealth canceled if the delay is too costly.

But hey, the SJWs wont' take away our games, it's a promise !

I hope the reason it's taking more time is due to a Switch port or something. Censorship could seriously hurt the future of series like this so I'd imagine they'd take the time and effort to avoid censoring.

Agreed, but it's probably depends on the game engine they are using for SK7; if it is custom-made, the switch to switch will require a significant allocation of ressources (time, money) from the project.

With Senran Kagura 7, considering the game was announced in August 2017 with a suggested release of Fall 2018, I do wonder whether Marvelous is purposefully keeping the game under wraps, while they try to determine the viability of alternate platforms for their more significant titles. If Sony's new stance on erotic content is as strict as many fear, the game's developers must know a version of SK7 that complies with these requests would likely see a significant sales hit and could also adversely impact future franchise titles.

Peach Ball: Senran Kagure for the Switch will have a physical release on retail shelves in Japan this coming December 13th. The game's sales will likely be something to watch.

No idea how far Marvelous is into 7even's development, but at least for their future titles, they should just ignore the PS4/PS5. Why bother having to deal with the headaches from Sony's draconian policies?

FFS Sony. Stop screwing over the Ninjas!
It's too late. They're in full Kutaragi mode.

Whenever Sony is on top, they lose their minds and start screwing everyone. It's only when they're hit with PS3 style losses do they apologize and start over.

So unless PS5 ends up flopping, the SJW censorship is here to stay.

Ironically, the first PS5 rumors already hint at them going down the same route ($500 "monster console") so maybe they will feel reality again and wake up.

About that Pokemon line, with how much the nineties style of censorship is en vogue, it only made sense for Nintendo to censor stuff even their nineties branch was okay with (despite technically having guidelines against it).
I'm willing to cut the Pokemon Company some slack because this censored line was inherited from HeartGold, which was a Treehouse localization from before The Pokemon Company started localizing them internally (Gen 8?) but it still sucks that they bowed down to pressure from "7 creepy things in pokemon" shit-tier professionally offended blogs.

For some people the only instances where it counts as 'censorship' is when a Black Belt who underwent gender transition in Pokemon XY doesn't say "I'M TRANS" obviously enough in the localization, as a minor game journalism controversy about the cover-up alleged. (and you just know that doing just that would get another controversy that no trans speaks about their past in real life or so, and how disrespectful it is to all trans in all ages and parallel universes) Or that eroge they accused of "covering up" lesbian undertones because... the translation was shit and unclear in general for all of the game. Or Snake's ass, etc.
