Which do you prefer: gyro or IR aiming?

Gyro has all the advantages and none of the limitations

Even with a small bounding box you can't aim and turn well at the same time.

Yes you can. You can near enough remove the bounding box in any of the more recent Wii and Wii U Call Of Duty games (and if I remember correctly, both the Conduit games on Wii U as well), so you're turning with even the slightest movement. You have absolute control over aiming and turning simultaneously, even if it takes a short while to adapt and find the right turning speed and so on that suits you. It gives you everything other control options do IMO, only more precise.

It depends on the game. I think IR works better in CoD BLOPS 2 on Wii u than a similar gyro implementation would. But the gyro controls for splatoon's third person, non-ADS gameplay work great. I played the 1v1 mode at a friends house on the pro controller and really missed them (I kept jerking the pro controller trying to finish the aiming on my reticle, lol).

I definitely like gyro better on the Wii U than on the 3DS - it's okay on 3DS but since it's moving the screen at the same time it can be disorienting.

I absolutely adore IR aiming. I wish there were FPS games on the Wii U that supported it.

There are? BLOPS 2 and Ghosts both support IR with a ton of options. They do add a ton of auto aim for the pro controller users to try to balance it out though. Both games have enough online population (500-1000 at various times of day, higher on BLOPS2) to play team deathmatch and FFA, objective gametypes have a low population though.

Out of interest, what's the population for objective/non-TDM modes on other consoles like? When I play, it's only ever TDM (out of choice, even if there were viable numbers on the other modes, I've no interest in them) and I'm curious whether that's also the case for most COD players or whether the distribution is more even on versions where the numbers are actually high enough to play all the other game types.
