Going back to 1992 for this one. The main consoles were the Genesis and SNES, with the Amiga and Neo Geo still around. Arcades weren't as big as the 90s but it was still getting big releases (guess which ones were the big ones on the list?). And you had the computer, of course!

As usual, the older years are a bit harder to find comprehensive information, particularly with arcades, so I did my best to cover many of the heavy hitters and went through a lot of sites to do this. If you see something missing, mention it so I can include it! =)

To clarify some questions asked in previous threads: you can mention both what your favorite game at the time was and what your favorite game now is. I might -- though I'm not sure -- compile what games get the most mentions just for fun. Not certain if I'll do that, but I'm thinking about it.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. Easy. That game plus Sam and Max Hit the Road was my gaming childhood.

Streets Of Rage 2, by far!

I never get sick of that gif.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 by a very wide margin.

I feel that it's one of the most replayable games from the year. I've played it top to bottom a billion times just because it's fun, even though I've explored everything and gotten all the chaos emeralds.

Though Tails was useless if a player wasn't controlling him during those special stages. Ugh. Guy was magnetized to bombs.

A lot of good choices. I'm tempted to go with Zelda, but Sonic 2 probably gave me more hours of gameplay. And the memories of playing it with younger siblings can't be topped.

In order:

A Link to the Past, Mortal Kombat, Super Mario Kart, Streets of Rage 2, Golden Axe 2.

Im at a mental block. Did I love Sonic 2 more than A link to The Past? More than Super Mario Kart? You know what, F this thread!

Can't really look past Streets of Rage 2. It was the closest, for the time I'd ever seen a console game look, sound and play to an arcade game. It was so far ahead of anything on the Megadrive and us Sega fans used it to take the piss out of snes owners. Final Fight? Pffft. SF2, still don't care.

Probably my favourite ever Megadrive game and in my all-time top 20 too.

Going to vote for this game :

This game was definitely something else in terms of Adventure game. Great story, incredible visuals, simple and smooth gameplay, good puzzles, and also a great soundtrack. It really felt like an epic adventure. And it was available in French.

I played it a lot when I was a kid.

Amazing year.

Star Control 2
Ultima Underworld
Lands of Lore
Indiana Jones the Fate of Atlantis
.
.

Cannot choose a single game over others.

A Link to the Past - Took action adventure games to a new level of epicness and is still one of the best ever. The overworld is incredibly well designed, the spritework remains visually pleasing, and that music. Also dark world mechanics.

Ultima Underworld - Directly influenced both Doom and Elder Scrolls Arena. One of the first texture mapped engines, beautifully organic and rewarding level design, and great gameplay.

Both of them are hugely influential and both of them are incredible games that hold up to this day.

At the time... wow it's difficult because that was a great year, but I remember the Quest For Glory remake having a special place in my young heart.

Zelda ALTTP still wins my heart, even now. Top Gear and Soul Blazer are honorable mentions and I still play them from time to time.

PS: The Zelda pic isn't from the original game, but apparently from a rom hack (Parallel Worlds).

Having owned a SNES back in '92 I have lots of fond memories of these games:

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Mario Kart
Street Fighter II
Contra III: The Alien Wars
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time
Mario Paint

It's hard to pick a favorite, but Super Mario Kart would probably take the cake due to the amazing battle mode.

Flashback
Sonic 2.

Flashback is amazing still to this day. Could be released as an indie game now and get high reviews.

Ah, '92, a good time to be 1 year old. One of my favorite games of all time is A Link to the Past, so I'd probably say that one, but I also have to give a nod to Kirby's Dream Land which was the very first video game I owned (by that I mean wasn't one of my dad's NES games) when my parents got me a Gameboy for my birthday in '95.

I keep forgetting to ask, what does the 56k in the thread title mean?

I might be wrong, but I thought it was some sort of GAF inside joke for OPs/threads that have a lot of pictures. Slower internet connections may struggle with how fast they can load those pages.

For me it's between:

Flashback
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Super Mario Kart
Zelda: A Link to the Past

In terms of time spent playing, it would be SMK, however, in terms of what I think is the best game overall, it's Zelda.

I keep forgetting to ask, what does the 56k in the thread title mean?

Couple people asked for a heads up since their internet connections are slower, so I put 56k there. =P

I'm sure none of us have 56k -- I think -- but I know some people have slower DSL that takes a bit to load the pics.
