What is up with the default "on" for Menu Navigation audio?

I have never look this up, but it's the most annoying new thing. Halo's default is to have this junk on. Ubisoft always has it on. Some other stupid game I just played did this too.

Sure, yeah, I can turn it off and I do. But who is this even for? If you're blind, wtf you playing *video* games for? My only assumption is the menu navigation is for illiterate people.

But whoever it's for, it has to be an outlier in society so why is it defaulted on? And why can't the system just tell the game every single handicap mode they add that I want it disabled?

Its just to show how "incluuuuusive" they are. Nothing else.
I'm sure the 2 blind people out there that need it appreciate, but honestly, like you say, if you are that blind what enjoyment do you possibly get out of playing games? It's like all that stuff they put in last of us that turns everyone into coloured blocks etc...just...why?

They hide behind accessibility (like blindness/poor eyesight) but it's most likely due to literacy levels plummeting.

(kidding but then not kidding...and that's really sad)

I noticed this on the Marvel Tokon beta too.
Even if you turn it off, it will always be back for the title screen, because your save and settings aren't loaded until you press start...

If they're gonna spend the time to make the feature, it better on first boot have a pop-up quickly that lets me disable it.

Otherwise you're just adding friction to the game, and some impatient people will nope out increasing the chance of a refund. I'm not one of those people, but having to dig through menus to find the off button is the only thing that annoys me.

We just bought a Retron 5 and not only is there no way to disable menu sounds, they are recorded at roughly twice the volume of any game you play. It's maddening.

edit: You know what, I just googled and I'm wrong lol Or rather my wife was wrong. Found the option to turn them off, THANK GOD

Its an accessibility thing, I think you're being a bit harsh on it.
I don't care if it's there. I just don't think it should be on default. I have to load every game and turn all this handicap crap off every game. It's just annoying.

And yes, I am being harsh. Because it's stupid to have blind people playing shooters, which I don't believe for a second is for them. We have a lot of low IQ idiots that think a McDonalds job should pay as much as a lawyer.

Fired up halo a few minutes ago and thinking the same thing. Had to disable it twice after dealing with the steam account linking crap.

It's easy to turn off. May not be easy to find for someone blind or with impaired vision.

I get annoyed by it, too, but i can't imagine how much it sucks to actually need it.

Hopefully it gets relegated to system level controls in the future.

First impressions. It's just too weird to have default on. Microsoft used to understand defaults. Maybe those people are gone.

The only time menu navigation sounds were ever good was in Killer Instinct on Xbox One where it played the notes to that theme.

?
If you are going to have it, it only makes sense to have it default to on at launch - you going to have people who can't read the menu text navigate the menus to turn it on?

It's for blind cunts you dick.

Yeah I've had it up to here with these blind bastards, ruining my games with their bloody menu noises.

Most legally blind people arent completely blind you nugget.

Well, it kind of needs to be on by default to work, but it should probably be a one-time narrated pop-up on first boot that lets you immediately opt out.

You may think "how can a blind person play anyway?", it is likely for people who are legally blind, but not fully blind so they may be able to enjoy a game on a low difficulty with aim assist and game contrast cranked up. I guess it would also help if you were illiterate or perhaps severly dyslexic.

How tf you playing Halo if you're blind?

Sorry folks, yes you're right it's great for disabled people who have it hard in life. God bless them.

But I gotta be honest, every time a game does this by default my mind goes to "fuck these virtue signaling woke devs"

Blind ≠ visually impaired. But I agree it should be off by default.

I don't like it but I didn't mind if it is I on by default cause I get it. But they need the have the button to turn that shit off right there as it first starts so you can turn it off immediately

This happened to me in Halo tonight, it should be a tag like Sweet Baby Detected. It has to be for the wrong reasons, the paradox is too big.

It is maybe for people who can't read at all?

The problem with that is if it's off by default, the people who actually need it won't know what the fuck is happening at the game's first boot.

No?

I mean, it needs to be turned on by default. How else would a blind person even find the option?

Still, it's annoying and should be the very first option that greets you in the game. It's also 2026 and they could at least update the voice to a sexy nurse or something.

Then it might as well not exist as the people who would use it would be unable to navigate to the menu to turn it on.
Having someone to help them for the first boot if it's really needed shouldn't be an issue. Or even better, have this as an option to toggle on consoles/pc settings where if it's ''on'' it launch every games with it already activated. Now that would be great.

But if you're visually impaired so much that you can't even toggle this in the very first menu that appears, how are you gonna play the game? Idk, just my two cents and maybe I'm an ass by thinking this, if someone directly concerned can provide some context as to why it's needed by default, I'm all for it.

There's different level of blindness.

It helps people more with it being on by default. It takes a couple of seconds to turn off and you only have to do it once.

Not everything needs to be turned into an "issue"

It should be a system setting. Games adding it on by default is just stupid. It's clearly annoying and guess what, I'm allowed to complain about it. You decided to click the thread.

What about the random people that have bad panic attacks from random voices that come on when a menu voice turns on? Do you care about them, hero?

You inventing a problem to try and make a point is fucking hilarious :messenger_tears_of_joy:
