Time to stop buying and hit the backlog

With PlayStation announcing the end of physical media production, and the price of digital storage soaring, maybe this is the time to stop buying new games.

Many of us here have sizable backlogs of games we haven't played through yet. There are also plenty of cheap used games out there. The world is full of excellent games you haven't played. Now is the time to play those.

Do you want to reward the games industry for taking the option of actually owning a game away from you? No?

Then send the only message the industry will hear. Stop buying.

I'm not naive enough to think there will be a reversal of the move to a digital only future, but let's be real. We're getting fucked here. Charging us the same (or more) to lease a game that we have to download ourselves, onto an expensive SSD or MicroSD Express that we have to pay for and making us re-download the games again if we want to replay them in years to come because we can't afford enough storage space to keep all our games installed until they decide to delist them all and we lose access to them forever is a shit deal.

If we want a better deal, we have to vote with our wallets. Save yourself some cash for a while and play through your backlog.

These companies think they have us by the balls? They don't understand the reckoning they have waiting for them.

Software emulation.

FPGA clone consoles.

Recompilations.

Optical drive emulators.

Jailbreaks.

Soft mods.

We'll see who's left standing by the end of the next console generation. Fuck 'em.

Takes a while for some people to understand but I've been on my steam backlog for years enjoying on my deck snd pc.

Well said. I'll probably take on this initiative. My backlog needs some attending. I don't have much interest in much future releases (definitely not GTAVI) anyway besides a select couple.

Not gonna stop buying newer games, but I have little interest in getting locked into a single forced digital storefront that already has removed digital media with weaker licensing terms.

PC at least has competing storefronts, drm-free digital, emulation/recomps and piracy...but I have mostly been playing my backlog this year.

They can do whatever they want. I won't buy digital games from them. I'm already skipping GTA6 because of that.

I'll continue to buy physical games. When it's over it's over.

I honestly believe I have enough titles in my backlog to last me 2 lifetimes. I'm seriously mental collecting games and never playing them. I guess I like knowing I have them if I wanted to play at any given moment. /smh

Have been doing that over the past years when AAA devs constantly dropped the ball

just completed Ys origin - felghana, trails 1st chapter, now I'm playing DQXI

also some fighting games here and there like DOA, tekken, blazblue since you can't really "complete" a fighting game

the way I'm able to destroy my backlog is putting my currently played games into "Now Playing" category which consist only 10 games at max to keep it focused. When finished I took it out of that category.

If I don't do that I would be wasting my time scrolling through my 600 steam game instead

It's a great relief to clear your backlog and move on to playing new games without rushing!

You do realize that the game installs to the drive and the disc is just there for a DRM license? Right? Surely you didn't think the game was running off the disc? Did you?

Way ahead of you, been playing nothing but PS3 since las year, right now about to 100% GTAV after many years of not touching the single player and moving to online PS4 to online PS5, next is Bioshock Infinite and then I'll decide between the Batman games or MGS2+4

The amount of games I can keep playing for years even if Sony royally fucks up it doesn't even affect my backlog enjoyment

Somehow forgot about storage prices being ridiculous.

Then again, not like games don't require downloading it first. So I guess there's that.

I know games install to the drive, but not every game is Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. What you're describing is the exception, not the rule. Most discs contain game data, they're not just DRM keys.

I'd rather be able to install most or all of a game from local media than a slow-ass PSN download.

Worse come to worse, I can probably live the rest of my life just based on PS2 emulation.

With bi-annual Deadly Premonition play-throughs.

Both MS and PS fucks us up. They deserve all our revenge , even if just 5 million of us to boycott upcominh helix and ps6, and all upcoming digital only AAA games, we can make a difference. And we all have emulation capability and backlogs for out gaming. And we might finally all need to embrace Nintendo , at this time the last slightly decent gaming company.

I feel sorry for the kids growing up that will never experience opening up a fresh new release, looking the steelbook, artbook included, putting the disk in and having a great time.

I never imagined we would be the last, not this soon anyway.

You'll see Nintendo follow suit really fast as they already want that code in box shit smh.

The discs have most of, or a build of the game. Once it's installed, it's just a DRM key that doesn't even spin after it's done with the handshake.

That's what I'm doing since some games cost 80€, no way I'm paying that price. The only exception is Gran Turismo since I'll play it for the whole gen, everything else I can wait.

We need more Indies and not these large big budget AAA games anyway. The open worlds have been lacking.

These days I prefer many arcade-y type games or linear experiences.

Way ahead of you OP, but I love the message. Six years ago I would have said it was impossible to every go through all of the games I want to play, but now I'm about three quarters through them all. I can always dig for gems if I ever get there too.

Old games + a few new multiplayer games is the ideal way to go I believe. You can even exchange a "new" game with a old game that is still ongoing (dead by daylight, left 4 dead 2, dota 2).

Yeah, between a ton of PC games in my Steam and GoG libraries, emulation setup (including handhelds), PS2, Dreamcast, Saturn, PS3, Vita consoles and PS5/XSX for BC, I don't need to buy anything for next 20 years.

Oh damn, forgot my Switch library as well!

I was pretty much done with buying new games on consoles (minus some Nintendo stuff) and this just gave me an extra push.

Edit: I also highly recommend doing a retro PC setup as it's cheap and you can have a ton of fun. I am running XP and it's blasting better than Marathon enjoyers.

Now is the time to start buying and building a backlog if you don't really have one.
I'm getting physical Rhythm Heaven today, and I'll be picking up all of the Switch2 Xenoblades now.

I have a lot of awesome old games I can play and replay, but I don't consider them an active backlog.
I've always been careful about managing my backlog and buying. If I had two games queued up in my backlog, I wouldn't buy any more new games until at least one was cleared.
Screw that now. I'm going on a spending spree, because it all ends in 2028.

And as I said in another thread, that Retroid Pocket 6 purchase is just looking better and better.

Can someone explain to me what the Retroid Pocket 6 even is? Are there games I can download easily here?
