Nice shot, skull. (that sounded odd)

Time has put up their top ten lists for the year, and rated Halo 3 the best game of the year.

Like a pebble that has been rounded over the centuries by the gentle splashing of the ocean waves, Halo 3 has become the perfect hardcore first-person combat simulator. By dint of painstaking labor on the part of its developer, Bungie, it has been refined over three installments to the point where it delivers only pure, unadulterated gaming bliss. Every combat is even-sided and complex and can be waged in multiple ways, using an arsenal of long- and short-range weapons, plus grenades and hand-to-hand moves. Every level is perfectly paced and balanced and graced with soaring architectural compositions. Plus it's graphically gorgeous. The epic storyline and the stirring score don't hurt either. In one of the greatest years video gaming has ever seen, Halo 3 is the very best of the bunch.
Congrats, Bungie.

I've been meaning to post this for a long time. My bad to Steve Scott. I told him I would post it immediately and my friend took forever to e-mail me the pictures (it wasn't my camera sadly).

You have to let me know when you finish that!!
We'll see what happens. I've been mulling over the H2 prima guide's section on the maps lately since the announcement of foundry. There's gotta be some glory which can be culled. Midship'll be a bitch to make, not anywhere as easy as Warlock. I think the best map to come out of foundry won't be a remake or the original default setup - it'll be something new.

That's pretty cool if someone really did get their hands on the maps early.

Had my first ever Rocket Race this afternoon. It's awesome. :o

... and straight into the face of the team behind us. :lol

And I think this one looks cool.

Can't wait for the new maps since I finally have time to play multiplayer a bit.

Was the "Afterthoughts" article from Jan 08's EGM (pg 52) posted here yet? Here are a few things i found interesting:

- "the Trip Mine... It was [potentially] a really powerful griefing tool for betraying your teammates, so we had to water it down... it never worked right. We're not really happy with that piece of equipment"

- Piece of equipment called "Vortex" was cut which sounded really badass. It was deployed like the energy drainer (thrown in front of a player) creating a mini-black-hole or magnetic field. It would suck in any object or projectile within range (including other players!). It was cut because it's too "expensive" from networking and performance standpoint.

- They are "paying attention to" the Mauler melee combo. quote from Tyson Green: "I could certainly see us looking at [multiplayer] and saying "Y'know, we should dial back the Maulers."

Couldn't they just turn off friendly fire for mines or at least greatly reduce it's damage to teammates instead of nerfing it outright?

Apart from it not working within the fiction of the universe's properties, that idea would create some exploitable avenues that are not preferred. I could run at you headlong and drop the trip mine under my own feet - an action with replete 'reward' but hardly any 'risk,' since damage from the item would not affect me or my teammates in a serious way.

The trip mine was a difficult piece of equipment to dial in, but to be honest, there's a small portion of equipment that I don't find useful anyways. Some like the bubble shield and the power drainer are brilliant, while the flare is a waste of my time.

The flare causes more problems then good, normally you blind yourself and your team too. Also if you are using a BR you can basicly keep track of the enemy with the huge red name that appears when you aim at their location.

I've decided that after the bullshit that CoD4 makes me go through, I've come back home to Halo 3. I just got back from Toy's R Us with a 1600 point card for these new maps. I've been there day and date for all new Halo 2 maps and I'm not going to miss these. I'm still getting my skills back in Halo 3, but I'll still put the smack down on the vast majority.

Oh, we will. I see great things coming from Foundry (as long as it isn't gimped by the budget or something like that).

So I just watched the RvB video and got hyped for the new maps, but what the hell is with Caboose's voice? I haven't kept up with the series, but did the original guy leave or something?

hey those new maps are kind of fun

remo and i just took a little over three dozen screens of them, in case anyone is interested:

working up impressions now. short answer: fun. long answer: fuuuuuuuuuuuun
(i haven't slept much, sorry)
.

Rat's Nest

Standoff

Foundry

Foundry (Emptied via Forge)

Christ, I'm an idiot.

I thought they were coming out at 5 (est) in the afternoon. I better get to sleep so I can wake-up at 5 to download them and play a couple matches before my final.

Dammit I didn't want to stay awake, but something woke me up, now I have problems going to sleep. I t seems like I will wait for a couple hours and if they don't show up until 2:30 I will just go back to bed. I will not be fooled into waiting awake until 5:00 PM of the next day like I did for the beta.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Nice pics, BuddyC. Standoff looks gorgeous. Rat's Nest is still the one I'm looking forward to the most. For some reason the mix of interiors and roads reminds me of Terminal, but wrapped into a loop.

Thanks BuddyC, those screens look great.

I'm liking all three maps, they look much more interesting than the ones that shipped on the retail disk. I'm still not completely sure how Rat's Nest plays though. I know there's a track around the map which sounds cool, but I hope we get more details on the middle section and on-foot gameplay.

I've heard we should have more details on that section in a couple hours. :p

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES! :lol

(I've already nicknamed the Mauler the Stupid Gun. I get killed by Mauler-mellee's way too much.)

BuddyC and I wrote up our impressions of each map, here you go:

http://blog.shacknews.com/blogarticle.x/50307

Bungie has finally addressed one of the core limitations of Forge: its customization options, while a godsend for gametype development, are pretty bare-bones when it comes to meaningfully altering a level's geometry.

Foundry is basically a large indoor area filled with crates, walls, stairways, and suspended platforms (it may remind you of every other FPS ever made), which can be completely removed and replaced--and used in the other two new maps. I toyed around with it, and the potential for platformer-esque levels and maze-like constructions is clear.

I don't get it really, I mean do they just don't want the game to be played that way or what? There are maulers everywhere so people can't complain to not have the means to counter a mauler meele combo. I use it a lot, 228 kills with the mauler and 1656 meele kills. This is going to force me to rethink my strategy.

Ok, you are a really good player from what I understand, whats your argument for the mauler to not be in the game?

starting standoff now. don't see the new playlist yet

ohh, started in some grass beside the base. pretty..

edit: caught one of the dishes moving. nice.

That was one of the fastest downloads I've had on the marketplace. 470mb or something in just a few mins.

I don't see the new (map-pack specific) playlists, was it supposed to go up with the maps or next week?

probably will go up in the morning around 9am pacific when bungie gets in to work or something.

initial solo impressions:

standoff: pretty. and larger outside then I was expecting

rats nest: that is one big level. lots of driving room. and the bases are sufficently maze-like.

foundry: surprisingly not as diverse as I thought it would be but can definitely see the forge potential.

now off to bed. won't be able play matches with anyone until I get home from work tomorrow :-(

So i went downstairs, eager to play some of the new maps and lo and behold... my family is watching The Fountain.

Fuck you Aronofsky

Im really disliking school right now. I have a dynamics final in the morning and I'm pulling an all nighter to study for it. I just needed to take a break to wake up. I wish I had power at my place. Maybe I could download the maps and get a few games in. However, most of where live has no power due to a massive ice storm we had over the weekend.

I would think that for something like this, they'd go into the playlists immediately. I just played a few games in Lone Wolves and none of the new maps turned up, though. Oh well.

I don't mind it, but it seems far too frequent in maps like High Ground and Narrows.

It is overpowered, but that can be counterbalanced by placing few of them on a map, or at least, at a lower spawn count.

Maps downloading now. I'm at 59% -- going quite fast. Heading straight into Standoff. Looks magnificent!

The maps are cool. I played 3 TS games in hopes to get a game on them but I had no luck. After that I've been messing with them on Forge. I cannot get to the damn Pelican on Rat's Nest due to a stupid invisible wall. Other than that, A+ at least from a graphical point of view. I will see how they play later when more people have them.

The problem is that the way the game handles close range combat, you can take down someones shield with an AR but if he has a mauler he will win every time close range even if you have full shield and he does not, means the weapon is too one sided on small maps like guardian.

*edit* Downloading the maps, holy nearly 500 meg!?

Messed with all three maps a bit ago:

I viewed each map as it stands from a Slayer standpoint and a CTF view. I think Rat's Nest and Standoff will be magnificent CTF and Slayer maps. I think the "feel" is amazing. Although I have one complaint of Rat's Nest: it felt like there is too many current equipment displayed. I believe there's four on each side. In the middle (near the Hammer) there's two Grav lifts (for each team, presumably), but they're basically 10 feet apart. :\

I can't wait for the playlist update to hit, but Forge will definitely hold me over until then. Foundry, itself, is a decent map. But the new additions of Forge to it are outstanding. You can do tons of things with the new blocks and stairs. :D
