Sense the fear. You can love a game without pretending it is without fault.

Dude, he's intentionally trolling. He may as well asked if the phantom patch increased the native resolution or provided more anti-aliasing or fixed melee. He knows full well that there is no magical framerate patch.

We've been looking our gift horse in the mouth since day one of the beta. No fanbase is more critical of their favorite game then the Halo community.

Also, Orange Box owns.

Few little things I wanted to ask, I'm playing in a tournament in a couple of weeks so I should know these things.

How long do weapons respawns take? Is it based on a timer which starts when they are picked up?

How long does the equipment last?

Is there any pattern to the enemy spawning in the game?

Bare in mind this will be 4v4, any tips would be very welcome.

I think different weapons respawn at different timers

Equipment varies I think, but the bubble shield for instance definitely lasts a good 20-30 seconds if I'm not mistaken

Enemies spawn together, usually on the opposite side of the map

Learn your weapons and get your sensitivity to feel right... It's so important to know what will kill who fastest, so gear up as much as possible... spawning and running into combat with an assault rifle over and over again while they have BRs and brute shots and snipers is a good way to lose massively.. Also, KNOW WHEN YOU ARE DEFINITELY GOING TO DIE- get a feel for gauging your own armor against your opponents and what weapons you both have.. if you can figure that out, you can use a tactic that I constantly use and try to achieve a draw by chucking a perfect grenade right under his or your feet.. there's nothing more satisfying than getting that sweet vengeance for your own death by planning ahead. Also, know when you're overpowered and know that it's okay to run from battle. If you can escape, that's one kill they won't get. If you're running through corridors away from them, chuck grenades to the sides at the walls you run by to damage them as they pursue you...

A lot of these things take practice to get a feel for them, but they are pretty useful tactics in my opinion. There are a lot more too, but it's all about developing your own play style I think.

Weapons now respawn on a combination of timer and the number on the map at any one time.

Once it has been picked up, the respawn timer starts to tick down. You can find what the timer value is for each spawn on each map using Forge: float up to the weapon in edit mode, and press X to see the respawn rate.

There is also a limit to the number of each type of weapon on the map at once. You can find out the details of this by pressing X again in Forge. In practice this only applies to power weapons: on The Pit, there can be up to 15 Battle Rifles, but only two Rocket Launchers.

On The Pit, the rockets respawn every three minutes. Someone will normally pick up rocks within about 20 seconds of the game starting, so 3:20 into the game, the rockets will have respawned again. They will not respawn a third time until one of the previous weapons is used up.

Similar rules apply to sniper rifles, but the respawn timer is two minutes, and the maximum number on the map is three. I'd argue this is even more important: if your team can get control of two of the three sniper rifles by taking advantage of the respawn time, you should be able to dominate the map.

I've only been able to test the above in two-player split-screen, and if it's wrong I would appreciate corrections.

Perhaps.
My biggest complaint with the trip mine is that it's no longer on Valhalla. In fact, it just isn't around enough period.

I hope that surprise is slightly more surprising than just Infection playlist.
Anything besides just that would be cool, since that's pretty much expected at this point.

Then you should go out and get candy instead.

I'm on holidays so I've just heard something about an update. Does it improve the framerate at all?

Where is this vacation spot?

"Cabrone, Halo 3 framerate has been increased. You must leave this village. Go to your home and get it."

Trip Mine on Valhalla was like my one source of contribution in the beta. I was a monster with that thing.

So, LTTP, but will Infection end up in Ranked playlists?

No beta carbine, but I'm certain the M6D will be ready to go for All Hallow's Eve. I just know it!

Doubt it. It'll probably have it's own unranked playlist at some point, when enough people whine about it.

The real question is, will BR starts ever end up in ANY playlists? Commence whining to expediate the process!

and hopefully our melee whining will pay off soon...

EDIT: Rocket. Race. Playlist. ever?

I like the Power Drainer more and more each time I use it. My best use of it came in One Bomb at Last Resort. Standing in the middle of the wheel area, looking outward to the seawall entrance, and they have a Mongoose and Warthog oncoming. I drop the equipment and vehicles immediately stall. So great.

A customs game searcher and a coop game searcher plz. Untill now i have only been able to play the first map on coop because there is never someone around to play with.

Never going to happen, confirmed. That is the whole point of making friends with strangers on Live.

I wouldn't complain if that's what it is. Most people don't get to play a lot of Infection (myself included) and a lot of people are missing out on some of these cooler gametypes that are not in normal Matchmaking. Do we know when this "Halloween Playlist" goes live?

Dunno if its been posted already, but Bungie.net just posted the Contact Harvest Prologue.

Joseph Staten (it's as if he's actually talking to you!) said:
More than 25 years before Halo 1, humanity was locked in a bitter civil war. Brother against brother – a vicious, bloody scrap. In an odd sort of way, the Covenant saved us from ourselves...and then made everything worse.

One of the soldiers fighting this war was Avery Johnson, aka Sergeant Johnson from the games. In large part, “Contact Harvest” is the story of how Avery became the soldier we know him to be. It’s a sometimes grim and gritty tale, so younger folks might want to check with their parents before reading any further.

That being said, if you do like this prologue, please consider buying the book (which is, as the title suggests, the complete story of first contact between us and the Covenant on the human planet, Harvest). It was a labor of love for me, and I sincerely hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.

I've read and own all of the Halo novels so far so I'll probably pick up Contact Harvest. The first contact between Human and Covenant races is a cool concept. Also, before the Covenant, the first generation of Spartans first missions were part of this intergalactic human civil war. You can read about them in Fall of Reach. I think there's one detailed in Ghosts of Onyx as well. Here's to hoping Staten writes a good book.

Read the prologue - pretty good stuff. I haven't read any of the novels, but I may check this one out. I liked the matter-of-fact writing style and the vivid adjectives thrown about. I haven't read the other Halo novels though. Actually I haven't read any books lately. I'm a bit of a gamer...

Also, I enjoy Frankie's writing better. Frankie has quite a way with ironic cultural references, subtle sarcastic quips and scatological wordsmithing. Stinkles, write a novel yo. Or just replace all the adjectives in Joe's book with your own. It'll be like Mad Libs.

The story is up on Bungie.net. Ranked Infection Playlist confirmed. Here's the FAQ.

http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&cid=12912

Q: Infection, what’s that?

Infection is this really great gametype, inspired by a custom game devised by our community in Halo 2, which we added official support for in Halo 3. In Infection, most players start off on a Human team, with one or more players starting off as Zombies. The odds are stacked heavily against the Zombies at first, but when a Human is killed by a Zombie (as they inevitably are), they join the Zombie team and turn on their former teammates.

Q: How long will the Living Dead haunt matchmaking?

Just for Halloween, from 12:01am to 3:00am the next morning, PST. We decided to let it go a bit late into the morning to give people a chance to play when they got home from their Halloween carousing. Infection is a lot of fun when everyone is into it, but we don’t think it would make a good playlist long term, so it’s going to come and go.

And if everyone has a good time, who knows? It may return, as the restless dead are known to do.

Q: Can I get achievements in this playlist?

Yes, it is set up as a Ranked Playlist, and players will have some good opportunities to pick up a few of the harder MP achievements without any of that pesky guilt. Fending off the hungry dead is as righteous a way as any to score an Overkill. It’s also a good chance to fill out your Ranked Medals with some of the Infection medals, like Infection Spree and Hell’s Janitor.

Q: There’s more than one version of Infection in this playlist, what is each version and how does it work?

We’re using two main versions: Save One Bullet, which is close to classical Infection but with limited ammunition which keeps the Humans from holding off the Zombies forever, and Creeping Death, where the Zombies are a bit slower but shockingly invisible and deadly. Creeping Rockets is a third variant where the Humans are more heavily armed, but the Zombies are tougher too.

Q: Do the maps in Living Dead have the same set-ups that I am used to?

The Living Dead playlist will be the first to use Forge variants in Matchmaking. Lars [Bakken] and Dan [Miller] pulled out all the stops and Forged some masterful variants featuring fortified positions and anti-Zombie booby traps to help get people into the Zombie mind (which is to say, wanting to get into a Human’s mind. Directly.)

Q: Man, I love these gametypes is there any way I can get them?

Any time you play one of these variants in Matchmaking, they’re saved in your Recent Games queue (in the Custom Games lobby, go to select the game type—the Recent Games list is at the top.) They may also show up in the Bungie Favorites this week.

Q: Will there be more special hoppers in the future?

You bet.

Fuck. Yes. @ Forged maps, easier achievements, infection medals.

I was hoping they were gonna use some custom gametypes of Infection. The folks at Ascendant Justice (and more specifically DualX2) have a great infection gametype called Quarantine which IMO mimicks how zombie played in Halo 2 but with some adjustments. So no shields, zombies run faster and have more gravity. Humans start with SMGs and have to find weapons.

I may release my forged infection map for Lost Resort, but alas this is not the mutiplayer thread.

so um, can we get Hardcore for Christmas or Hanukah if we get this zombie thing for Halloween?
How is having a hardcore playlist festive?

For Christmas, they could change blue team to green team.
For Hanukah, they could give the winning team flaming heads.

We were just discussing this in the official multiplayer discussion and I was saying that I think adding Hardcore and SWAT games into the Team Tactical list would probably be a good idea. They appeal to the same crowd and it would give Tactical which I think is a very good addition to the available playlists as it offers something quite a bit different, a bit more variety.

You see, the macabees used Battle rifles to stop the Syrians who only liked SMG's and assault rifles. Damn noobs.

You obviously didn't play it in Halo 2. Trust me - it is great fun.

nah i did. it was one of those things you did when you were really really bored and joined some random party full of little kids who thought it was the greatest thing ever.

So I guess we can't party up on the Infection playlist since it's ranked and sort of a FFA gametype, eh?
Was kist going to ask this as well. Another question I got is how many players will it hold. You can't emulate a good zombie match without having the full 16 players.

Ah yes, ranked BTB would be nice. Bungie has to change their mindset about it first.

In Halo 2 they made it unranked because BTB=lag and lag=unfair rank. But Halo 3 has a better net code, and from my experience, there's MUCH less lag. Ranked BTB would be awesome because there would be more serious competition (no guests/splitscreen) and less quitters.

I have played many BTB games over the past week and it's been a blast. Hardly any lag and when you have a group of your friends, it's awesome. Tons better and more fun.

Though they should add more weight to objective gametypes.

Also, it's getting enough attention, IMO. It had over 50,000+ when I was on (and this was around midnight EST).
