They should've anticipated people would "boost" for achievements. The first problem was making some of them extremely difficult to get during normal gameplay. And the other big mistake was tying those difficult achievements to the unlockable armor.

I have to agree that the multiplayer acheivements are totally, totally ridiculous and way out of reach of almost everyone. Maybe that was the intention, maybe not, either way it's kinda annoying that they're tied to tangible rewards that people want.
 
Damn you guys who are setting up kills for achiements, I earned mine without the need to cheat so to me they are real achievements :)

Honestly, you feel good about not earning it?
 
I remember thinking to myself in a team slayer where I never died "Hah, just got loads of achievements this match".. oh how little did I research. :(

Edit: Also has anyone else had trouble getting the Marathon Man achievement to activate? Found all 7 and even waited for the red warning screen to appear/go away yet nadda :(
 
Forget the achievements for a second guys, has anyone else gotten the Disc Read Error? The game isn't even starting anymore! Tried other games, they work fine so the drive is ok.

PS My Elite is brand new...

Not me, on a launch machine playing the CE, im suprised its still smooth sailing.

Have you seen both versions of the final terminal (there's a different message on Legendary)?

Exchange your disc--it's faulty.

Or try this.

* Bring 2 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan.
* Place DVD, label side down in the pan.
* Use a wooden ladel to push the DVD below the water.
* Wait about 10 seconds. If you notice smoke from the DVD, this is normal (I was scared when that happened, I thought it was melting).
* Take saucepan off heat and carefully remove DVD.
* Place DVD, label side down, on some paper towel.
* Take a lint free cloth and gently clean the data side.
* Your DVD should now look like new!

You guys are lucky to not have problems then, hope you don't have to deal with this crap...

Just so you all know, this is a way larger problem than it seems... Bungie.net and the Xbox.com forums both already have 100 page, 3000 post threads of people complaining of this error.

So far, all Bungie has said is call 18004MYXBOX... Great support guys!!

What else are they supposed to do? All they did was make the game--not publish it. That's all Microsoft.
 
I'm super proud of my Overkill. I normally am not that good. The end of the game was awesome. I will put the film in my FileShare, and wear the match like a medal.

I see your point, but still, this game is why I even picked up a Xbox and I'm a little angry, if not disheartened with Microsoft and the way they do business. They would rather spend millions upon millions in marketing then just assuring that all the games were pressed properly and that there are no errors in the manufacturing process of the game that will no doubt sell for them, regardless of advertising. The whole scratched LE disc showed that they couldn't care less about the quality of the product and this just furthers the point. I hope they can come up with a solution that doesn't involve me sending back my brand new xbox for a refurb.

I'm going to exchange discs today and see what happens. Thanks for the replies.

Now back to arguing over achievements and pwning n00bs...

The only thing that sucks about the MP achievements is that they're all in ranked free for all.

Other than that, you will be able to get them without even trying just by playing ranked multiplayer free for all. That's the point of these achievements - unlike something like Gears of War or Shadowrun where you have to earn 100 kills with a sniper, these ones will just fall into your lap as you play the game.

I'd like to hear Bungie's logic for making these achievements only happen in ranked free for all games instead of just any ranked match.

Board the same vehicle within 10 seconds after being boarded in any free for all playlist (Online).

Headshot Honcho

Kill 10 enemies with headshots in a ranked free for all playlist or in campaign.

Fear the Pink Mist

Mongoose Mowdown

Splatter an enemy with the mongoose in a ranked free for all playlist (Online).

Yes, I searched all around and tried climbing trees but I only met invisible walls (of which there are WAY too many in Halo 3).

EDIT: It'd also be cool to know where the floating Jason Jones is in the level Halo.

I think you have to wait till this loooong gridsliding ends and the other batch of text appears. (thats after the red screen I think)
Thats when my achievement unlocked.

And I just caught myself driving around in the moongose and running around with the laser on High Grounds for the damn achievement instead of playing properly. :(

Doing extraordinary tasks and hoping of unlikely situations in ranked games ..... bad idea

Basically when you activate a terminal you can tap the A button over and over until there aren't any new screens, then you can press B to exit. Also, don't forget the lone terminal on Halo!

They've already said:
So you don't ruin team based games for the rest of your team while trying to get achievements. FFA is all about you and you alone.

The only slip up I see is making achievements in ranked play, I think all the achievements should have been in unranked only; but then again imagine how messy unranked play would be with achievements active and no rank consequence.... who knows.
 
The only problem I have with the multiplayer achievements is the fact that they're limited to one playlist that only has 4 other players.

They are all attainable if you play the game long enough...at some point the opportunity will present itself to get just about all of them. They should have been unlockable in all ranked games.
 
I just realized I didn't get the Mongoose Mowdown acheivement even though my career stats show I killed 2 people with one. Does it need to be deathmatch or can it work in a team match?

Lone wolves only :lol

Best way to do it is don't veto the crazy king games, and just drive into the hill zone while two people duke it out, it worked for me.

*edit* I did the same trick for two in one, decided to hold back and just use the lazer when two people were fighting.
 
Okay noob question here:
Ain't there any matchmaking for the crazy mods like Infection? Same goes for CO-OP. Do you really have to invite other people to play with you :/? I just want to click on "find CO-OP dude to play with" and then get it on!

Only problem I have with the ranked free for all achievements is that in Lone Wolves you only have 4 other people to kill. That means in order to get the Overkill achievement you have to kill everyone else within a small time frame. You can be a total GOD at Halo and never get that acheivement based on luck since all four people could be scattered across the map.

I agree though that the achievements should have been in ranked playlist in general, not just free for all. Only reason I could see them doing it this way is cause your teamates can help assist you with getting the Overkill achievement or the others in team games.

Oh, and the only reason I have the Overkill achievement is cause one of the first few Lone Wolves games I went into one of the guys in the pre-game lobby says "Who wants to get acheivements?" So all 5 of us stood in the middle to get the Overkill achievement one at a time.

I think achievements like getting X double kills in ranked play overtime would have been more enjoyable to get and people would have been less likely to achievement whore, and just play the game naturally. Oh well... the achievement thing will be over soon and people will get back to just playing the game. :D

Some are pretty difficult to get but game breaking? Come on. I don't see a problem with a few of the achievements being hard to obtain. Isn't that the point? Would you want all achievements to fall into your lap?

That battle was so much easier than the first Scarab fight on Legendary actually. With the Hornet it's just a matter of killing the Banshees first, then circle-strafing one Scarab until it lowers, land on the top of it, blow the core, get back on, take care of the new Ghosts/Brute Marauders that come in to support the other Scarab, then repeat the Scarab-killing process. Simple. :D

If you're having the same problem I'm having, a new disc is not going to solve the problem. I had a scratched CE disc and got it swapped for the game disc from the regular version of the game. The new disc is absolutely pristine, but I get the DRE in the exact same spot (first checkpoint in the game after leaving the landing area).

I called MS about it last week and they told me to swap discs again, so I went to my local Gamestop, explained the situation to him and that I didn't think it was the disc, so we popped my game in the display 360 they had in the store and it worked fine.

I have tried clearing cache, playing 4-5 other games (which all work fine) before trying to play Halo 3, playing with my HD removed, deleting the H3 game save on my machine, and anything else you can think of and it freezes in the exact same spot every single time. Oddly enough, I can play multiplayer with no problems whatsoever.

I haven't called MS since last week because (according to the people in that Xbox forum thread) they'll just offer to "fix" my system for a fee and I'm waiting for them to release a patch or something that will cure this issue since it's clearly a hardware problem of some sort. In the interim, I'm just going to sit here and be pissed that I've had Halo 3 for over a week and still haven't been able to play more than 20-30 seconds into the campaign.
 
The only problem with the whole achievement thing is really just the overkill one, since you have to kill every other person playing within seconds. And, no, I don't feel super skilled every time I do that; I feel super lucky because luck is virtually the only way you ever get that in the first place.

I was a beta tester for XBL before it launched and we had to do the same exact thing for Microsoft's football game we were given to test. It may sound strange, but it actually works.

Tsavo Highway - Pick up a Trip Mine after you save the Marines, then destroy the Wraith
, fire a few rounds into a chopper, and lay down the Trip Mine infront of him and hope it destroys the whole vehicle (May take a few tries).
