What a substandard ending...

The Gravemind ordeal was poorly handled (ridiculously easy) and it overall was very anti-climatic. The only good part was the death of Johnson, although I'd rather have the Chief die a hero's death. It was a cop-out ending--Star Wars of this generation, my ass. Well, maybe the prequels...

At least
they ended it off how I wanted them to... with a vehicle section, running away from impending doom.

i havent really noticed an issue. sometimes i blow it and melee them when their shields are to high still to kill em and i get killed by them, but i dont think thats lag. are you sure your hit should have killed them? positive?

That's how I've played Halo:CE and Halo 2 for ages. I burn the shield, and go in for the punch. So yeah, I'm sure. It's just so weird, you know? Been playing like this since the beginning of Halo, and it's just not working for me in Halo 3.

:(

"unable to join. Incompatible network settings"

That's the error all my friends get when they try to join my game. But my NAT is set to Open or something like that.

Is there some thing I need to change in my router settings?

I know this is silly, but give me a bone here. Something isn't right with melee in this game. I don't lag. I'm usually hosting, etc etc. But hell, I haven't been able to melee someone in like, hours.

There has got to be something else going on here. Timing? Its as if my punch is simply ignored, and the enemy's fist slams me across the map (Which by the way, is always fun to watch.)

In Halo 2, I've always used the shoot+punch+punch really quickly, and was pretty damn happy that you made the melee more useful in Halo 3, but whatever is going on is pretty weird.

Maybe I'm just going nuts.
Nothing is wrong with melee, its just the new FOV. They changed the FOV. You will have to get used to the new timing of your melees. The new FOV is larger than the old one and that makes some people make mistakes when they calculate their distances, but you will get used to it.
edit: Also they removed a lot of the stupid lounge of the meele, meaning that now the netcode is so good that the melee actually hits were it should and it doesnt compensate for a bad netcode like it used to. Meaning that now you cannot be a noob with your melees.

I haven't noticed this issue either. In fact if you check my stats page, you'll see that about a third of my kills are melees. Usually I think an "It's just you" answer is a cop out, but I actually think that could be the case here.

I was hoping for at least 85 degree FOV, at least it's better then the god awful FOV in H2. H1 still has them beat though. ;)
I didn't know jack or squat about FOV for the longest time, but Halo 2 always felt really cramped, and I lost track of enemies fast. Of the benefits widescreen brings, the wider FOV has been the one I appreciate the most, so far.

I hope this is the case, as this is really bugging me. That and add the fact that the melee doesn't lung nearly as much as Halo 2. Maybe it's just timing that is a problem right now.

the gravemind stuff just pissed me off. a different and worse voice then part 2's, small role in the story where i think it should have been pivital, and they never even showed him! what a cop out.... grrrr

as far as johnson goes, i wish they had had miranda kill him then herself in that one scene. THAT would have been powerful!

I've noticed it too, but didn't mention it becauseI thought it was just me. I go in for the whack kill after someone else and I have been swapping AR fire and even though my animation connects first, it's his that kills me instead. It's got to be lag of some sort because I really, really doubt I'm misjudging health this badly.

Yep, no lounge. The old lounge was a way to compensate for the bad netcode of the old system, now the melee works the way it properly should. It is good imo. Check my stats, melee is my second best way to kill. I got used to it, you will too.

Anyone want to do Co-op later today?

Question about online co-op in general: do you need to be in a party first with people on your friends list or can you start a level on whatever difficulty you want to play and it will find other people looking to play co-op with the same level and difficulty? Also if you only get so far in co-op, can you continue solo without the other people later on?

I hear you. This is the best way to handle the issue - give the wider display a wider FOV, and then people like me who care enough about it will just letterbox it on our 4:3 displays to maximize the visible area.

Got to play Halo 3 for 2 hours. Great game, lots of fun! Then my 360 ROD! My only major criticism of the game is that the animation could be better. I think Bungie doesn't do any mocap so that may explain a few things but I hope bungie improves the animation for their next game.

Ghaleon or anyone else in general -

Would it make sense to have another topic to share our GAFFER-made game types and forge maps?

On the one hand.... it's ANOTHER Halo topic. But on the other hand... I made a cool variant earlier this week but now it's buried in this topic, and this hammer variant will disappear from view in like 1 hour, too.

In the new topic the OP could be kept updated with GAF's favorite GAF-made variants, a complete listing of all the variants members have made...

I will put my trust in you, brown-armor thing.

great idea, but probably make it in the online forum and link to it in here

Here's the spec:
When you take a screenshot and either Autoname and Save or Save As, once you complete both fields of text, one for the title one for the description, then the file uploads to Bungie.net in your hi res screenshots gallery, from there you can put it in the gallery and make it your Trophy Shot.

What's happening right now:
Server load is insane and we put a higher priority on files that are in your File Share than just the screenshot gallery, since the File Share is directly tied to the game, so you can get your screenshots swiftly by doing the work around folks are using here, take a screen, upload it to your file share, et cetera.

What WILL be happening soon:
Taking a screenshot in the game, logging into Bungie.net and seeing the screenshot there near-instantly.

It's just a load issue and we're aware of the delay and working on getting things caught up, right now it might take up to 24 hours to get your screenshot, but that's because there's so many screens in the queue globally.
I have been looking for the official word on this for a while now. I really appreciate it.

it skips the "look up, look down" setup at the beginning

can you elaborate on what that is in halo 3? i've only played on heroic and legendary, so it skips it anyways

to recognize if you play with inverted look or not

it's a marine just asking you to look up, look down

Cool. I assume there are more enemies?

I believe there are still the same amount of enemies, but Legendary already adds a crazy team of baddies to begin with, and if that isn't enough, you can always turn on skulls and such.

Oh, okay. I went through on Heroic and was really surprised when they didn't use that perfect excuse (your suit still needs to be calibrated!) for the control fine-tuning. I guess they actually do!

Hoo yeah about the needler. After all the "needler sucks" cries, it seems like Bungie said FUCK IT, and made the needler the best weapon in the history of mankind. It feels so damn awesome, but lets wait a month when people start saying "the needler is overpowered". Only time will tell. ATM, I will take the needler over the RAWCAT LAWNCHAIR.

Friend of mine said it was overpowered last night.

Also said the Brute Shotgun was overpowered too.

wtf

It's finnicky, but the term "marathon" is particularly appropriate in order to complete this achievement.

I fear you have to play through the whole game in one sitting? :(

I guess this is something I'll reserve for co-op.

It's not overpowered. People who know what they are doing can sidestep it easily. If you just back up though, you're going to get needled.

i've heard that about the mauler too, which i think is kind of silly. the shotgun is still the better of the two IMO, the only thing you could say is that maybe the mauler is just too frequently placed on maps... but i dont see that as a bad thing personally (i'm a mauler whore myself)

to be honest, it is pretty damn powerful up close. I'd say even more so than the Shotgun. The balance, is that med-long range, it's like the most useless weapon in the game. The shotgun has a bit better range than it, but thats about it.
