so I bought the game yesterday, and played a couple of matches online in basic training.
i realized multiplayer is really really hard if you don't know the maps, in and out. i know you guys have all heard this before, but I wish there was an exact replica of Blood Gulch. That still remains my favorite multiplayer map of all time.
Agreed. I had my doubts about the lifts on that level, but they work well. I'm also a huge fan of the trio of loft rooms on Construct and nearly everything on Guardian. Default maps need more firebombs though. It's probably been said ad nauseum in this thread already, but I'll reiterate it: as great as the beta maps are, matchmaking shouldn't have them in there for a few weeks and as beautiful as Isolation is, I just don't care for that map for some reason.
I have very few complaints about campaign, I've played it more than a dozen times since for the last 8 days and it's incredible. I'm not a terrible fan of
'Cortana'
on Legendary, but I understand its purpose and the objective they're trying to create.
I think the last two levels, despite the story's preclusions, would have been better with Covenant, particularly the Brutes.
The Brutes were amazingly fun to fight.
I think in metagames the queues for the
Cortana/Gravemind
sequences should be removed. There's no need for them after playing through the campaign a couple times and playing for scoring should remove them completely.
Now from a story perspective, I adored it even more. There were so many throwbacks to Halo: Combat Evolved, both in scenery and in cinematics that it was a complete joy to watch. I think they wrapped up everything I wanted to know, despite hearing that some people wanted more information apparently.
Little praises here from me: Although I enjoyed almost every single level more than anything from Halo 1 and Halo 2,
'The Ark' and 'The Covenant'
I have played both nearly twenty times and they provide more fun than anything I've done in videogames before and likely for a long time. Incredible on Legendary and with others involved. Great fucking levels. Also, Lars Bakken and Tyson Green deserve fucking gold stars for Forge. It's the best improvement to the game so far and I'm SO glad it made it in.
I've hyped this game to incredible proportions, but somehow it trumped all of the hype I had thrown its way.
Basic Training is basically the same as regular regular matchmaking, but it only allows a maximum of 4 players which are (theoretically) just as new to the game as you are. You can also get a little acquainted with some of the maps, but I noticed that the weapon sets aren't the same in Basic Training and Ranked Matches.
Couldn't play it anymore until I achieved the first rank though (Private or something), which in turn gave me an achievement of 5 or 10 points.

So what was the average completion time for everyone? I wasn't trying to beat is fast, but I beat it in 4:45. Is this common?

Yes, those were my favorite two levels by far. The Ark is like being on the Planet of the Apes. It's a sci-fi fan's wet dream. And The Covenant is a total throwback to Halo 1 in the best possible way, and the environment is simply beautiful.
True, the end was amazing! I have to say level 6 is also very amazing. Game got much better after the first 3 levels, excluding the first part when you start, that shit is insane.
Anyone else overwhelmed with the options after finishing the fight? Even with no online I don't know if I want to start playing the meta game, go skull hunting, play with forge, or make sweet screencaps from my movies.

The Covenant. Supposedly it's on the second tower and I'm looking at a Youtube video that shows. Whenever I arrive there though it isn't present. What's wrong?
Oh wow. I just played the entire game on coop tonight. Even with my fairly mediocre connection speed, it ran smooth as smooth can be. Even playing with a guest the frame-rate never dropped, and the lag was honestly unnoticeable. We put a few skulls on, which really did change how we tackled different things.
After our first play-through, we did the final
warthog run
a few more times just for kicks, which was great fun. Before that, one of my favourite moments playing coop was
using a warthog to go up a small snow-ramp diving onto one of two scarabs, destroying it, and running away RIGHT before it exploded, after which we boarded two ghosts and destroyed the other Scarab - Both times without the Hornets.
I can't believe how fun this game is. I can't believe how much of my life is going to be put into this game. I haven't even played all of the multiplayer maps yet. So much fun.

I'd accidentally left one AA Wraith alive, but had otherwise finished the fight before looking for the skull. Also does the Youtube vid show you a sequence of where it was? My first hunch at where it was turned out to be incorrect.
I thought it was on -top- of the structure but the level ceiling stopped me from getting up there so I was all "wtf mate". So I landed the Hornet and had a wander and found it at the top of the ramp.
I would reply to just one post, but it seems a lot of you jumped on me. I play every game the same exact way. Easy on the first run and the hardest difficulty on the second run.
But really, :lol at the responses. I wasn't aware you could beat the game in just under 5 hours., and I was wondering if anyone else had beaten it so quickly. I'll do the harder difficulty, but god damn you guys get defensive. :/
So check this out!!! Bungie.net catalogues all the assets from a paticular game that people have created for all to see. So when I looked over this paticular game in the game viewer I can see the movies and the screens everyone has made from it. That's so simple, but so awesome!

Bungie has said Easy is even easier this time around. I wouldn't worry about game length - The Ark on Heroic took me just under 2 hours, and it was AWESOME!

Ok, so I finished up the campaign last night. Overall I'd give the campaign a 7/10. Again, Bungie is full of some of the laziest level designers I've ever seen, and they don't seem to care to address criticisms and complaints worth a damn. Of the nine levels, almost all of them had backtrack elements with a couple being almost complete reversals. Heck, level 8 was a forward and back affair in addition to being recycled from an earlier level. This is something that fans have justifiably complained about but it hasn't been improved in either sequel.
I still completely hate the Flood. It's not a fun enemy, and they aren't intelligent like the Brutes. The Brutes, however, are a problem as well. Elites are MUCH better than Brutes as an enemy, and they SEVERELY underused the Jackals. I had a lot of issues with the enemy selection/variety.
Also, I think that you spend about 75% of the campaign in vehicles...it was a bit too much.
On the other hand, it was still a lot of fun. The gameplay is very tight, addictive, and full of cool scripted events. Gameplay is the only thing saving the game from dropping into "meh" levels, because the level design, gameplay variety, and enemies were pretty weak this time around.
Also, what was even the point of that taking place on earth? It didn't feel any different than any other location. There should have been some city environments. The place still felt very alien. Sure, it was the fight for earth, but it didn't seem like it.
Story spoiler:
Were they trying to imply some sort of love connection between the Chief and Cortana? that whole thing felt weird and kind of dumb. It only seemed like the Chief sort of cared. It was like Johnson was more into it than anybody else. I just couldn't enjoy that "bond" aspect of Master Chief and Cortana...especially since MC apparently dies. So in the end, what was the point of that? Maybe the extra Legendary cutscene clears this up?
I did, however, like that they didn't force the Arbiter on us while letting him play a regular and major role in the action. That was really well done. A few times I just backed up and watched him tear the Flood apart. He's definitely one of the coolest FPS characters out there.
So now I'm ready to get to what's going to own me for the next couple of years: multiplayer. While I'm pretty bummed out about the single player offering, nothing is upsetting about the multiplayer implementation in the game. I feel so sorry for non-Gold Halo 3 owners, they are REALLY missing out.
So that gives everyone the go ahead to give me shit about how I play games. Right, thanks guys.

Dude, relax, nobody seriously gave you "shit". I don't know if you've been following GAF over the last day or so, but there's been a lot of stealth and not so stealth trolling of Halo 3, I think people are just a little wary is all.

Yes the extra cut scene gives a little more into the relationship...it is basically a love story...the Chief is Cortana's defender. And from the looks of it there will be a whole lot of things to defend her from in the future
Also I disagree with your campaign analysis...but 100% agree that MP is going to own me for years
There's three Banshees that seem to keep just out of reach and try to tease you into the next area, if you follow completely a invisible wall will come behind you. Any tricks for those? I took down the Phantom that dropped the Wrath and everything basically. You're not talking about both sections right?

I'm sure this has been asked a milltion times and I do recall someone mentioning (I think) a way to fix this. I watch my movies and then take pictures throughout and save them. It says it uploading them to bungie.net, yet when I go there, nothing shows up. What was the quick fix for this right now?

You really can't experiment with Halo 3's guns on easy mode, which is what makes the game so fun imo. That and finding different strategies to attack enemies. Try Heroic next time, it's neither too hard or too easy. If you really want to think then try Legendary.
Easy is meant for 12 year old girls basically. That is--that's where my little sister plays it on so far. Just run and gun--it's getting a bit bleak for her so I'm sure she's going to turn it up to Normal soon.

I'm definitely going to do Legendary. Thanks for the reply.
Beerbelly, The Lamonster, thanks for the good responses. Everyone that gave me shit, you have reminded me exactly why I don't wear a headset while playing Halo.

since H2 there's been hints of the relationship between the chief, Cortana and johnson. The chief is stoic, that's the point, the only time you see how much he cares for her is when he saved her. That scene was quite well done IMO.
Also, watch the credits all the way through.
Sorry bungie was sitting around eating too much pizza for you...
As for repeating levels, I'm going to just go ahead and say I'd much rather walk out the way I came into a building than have the game throw constant scripted elements at me that force me to leave another way than I came in. Almost all of the backtracking served to draw me into the space, reminded me that I was in a big sandbox rather than on a rollercoaster.
The backtrackign in Halo 1 was bad because they basically re-used the same sand boxes 4 times,
halo 3 does it once, on floodgate, which I'm not a huge fan of
but the rest of the backtracking is there as part of the sandbox, which is a good design decision IMO.
