The Official Halo 3 Thread

Pardon my ignorance, but I have a quick question. Can you play 4 player Co-op with 3 randoms on live, or do you have to invite people from your friends list only? It didn't seem obvious to me how to do it last night.

I've heard that destroying that front turret does it, and I've tried it multiple times, still nothing. In fact on that section I've popped the front and side turret on multiple dropships and gotten nothing.

Maybe I was a used car salesman in a former life and this is just cosmic irony. Who knows.
Did you do it before the enemies dropped off?

Ending credits spoiler
Wow @ the ending after the credits. Much more fitting than anything I could come up with, very simple and elegant. Especially the chief going back into cryogenic sleep, great way to tie it to the beginning of Halo CE. I thought I was spoilered because I got XBL Friend requests from CORTANADIES and MCDIES.
Now onto the rest of the game and the extras.

And a great way to tie it to
Marathon
.

I'm so happy they weren't true!

Also, my thoughts on the ending.

I think the reason that the ship broke in half was not because half of it didn't make it through the portable, MC would be dead, but because "he is forerunner" and that sent him somewhere else.

I've heard a few people say that. How so?

I beat the campaign last night on normal, got some questions. WARNING: BIG SPOILERS COMING, DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED CAMPAIGN!

What was up with those visions of Cortana the MC kept seeing throughout the game? Was it the Gravemind's doing?
So, the MC really died at the end? If the Arbiter survived, I figured he would have too. Did I miss something?

I think I had more, but I forgot them now.

HOLY SHIT IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED THE ROCKET RACE VARIANT DO IT RIGHT NOW. SO. MUCH. FUN. :D :D :D

I haven't had so much fun with a videogame in a long, long time. I think I like it more than I like real Halo.

It's the EXACT sort of game type variant that shows off the flexibility Bungie has built into their system. Although it IS Halo (clearly), it doesn't FEEL like Halo. Some buddies and I originally were just going to test it out, and we ended up playing that one mode almost all evening - 10 straight rounds of Rocket Race.

I have a feeling this is going to be my go to "hang out and have fun with some buds" game mode for many, many months. I had a giant grin plastered on my face the whole time.

It works like this:
The point of the game is to ride around in pairs on mongooses, trying to get to each new hill before your opponents do, while trying to fuck them up as best you can with rockets. The rockets don't kill anyone - they just throw you off-course and toss you around like crazy :D :D :D

- Teams of two (we had FIVE teams of two). One is the VIP, and he can't drive vehicles. He can only can be a passenger.
- A "hill" spawns on the map, but to cap the hill and earn a point the VIP only has to pass through it for a split second. Then a new hill pops up. They're like checkpoints.
-So, you end up with one driver absolutely RACING around the map, and the VIP riding behind firing off rockets like mad, trying to defend your mongoose from all the other teams.
-Players are invincible. They can't be killed. Vehicles can't be blown up.

It gets SOOOO crazy. Playing on Sandtrap, it looks like a scene out of mad max. Three mongooses flying across the sand, shooting off rockets at one another. Also, since you can't be killed, you get to see some CRAAAAZY mongoose flips. Every single round has like 10+ saved film-worthy moments. I was playing on Valhalla and my partner and I literally got rocket juggled from one side of the map to the other.

Seriously guys. Rocket Race >>> All. It's SO amazingly fun. You'll be doing yourself a BIG disservice if you don't download it and get a game together with at least three teams.

Here you go, just queue it up:

http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=13100789

There's a reason its the highest rated and most downloaded variant yet. Sooo fun.

On Level 2 (Crow's Nest), just grab the turret on the side and start blasting those plasma turrets off the ships as they drop off enemies. I got the achievement after destroying all of them.

Okay, so I'm on the latter part of the 1st chapter--dunno how close I am to the end of it--but I just met the huge mofo with the Gravity Axe. I've figured out to take out his helmet as the best way to take him down but even when I get past him, I still run into a shitload of enemies without reaching a checkpoint.

What I usually do is bait enemies down to that service tunnel--the one where the sides are open and you can still get sniped if you aren't careful and you actually travel underneath Gravity Axe Guy. Barring that, I've tried climbing up top to the room w/ all the windows to snipe but keep getting sniped myself.

Any suggestions? And where the hell is the next checkpoint? I did make it across once or twice and actually took out Gravity Axe Guy and his equally powerful minions (there's about 3 of 'em hanging out above that service tunnel) and still hadn't hit one....
You need to take out all the snipers first. Pretty much have to. There's a couple across the river and a couple on rooftops on your side of the river. The best way I found to take out the chieftain is to nuke his ass with nades/bruteshot enough so that he uses invincibility right off the bat and then pray to God he charges after the Arbiter first. You can use the time that he's spending on that to run back away from the bridge and pick up more nades/ammo and blast him soon as he comes into view.

Does anyone know how to discern which enemies are resistant to what? Apparantly one of the skulls turns resistance into immunity, and I never even noticed there were fucking resistant mobs in the game. I'm guessing the golden brutes are the power armor ones, which resist human tech? And then would unarmored be resistant to energy tech? Are there any others besides that?

Damn man, after I beat campaign, I just went straight for MP matches. I want to get these skulls now. Though, I'm not sure if I want to hunt them down myself ( As finding those would be hella hard, but cool to complete without any aid) or just grab them all and see how tough the game is.

Do they really make such a huge difference?

Alright, I'll give it another try.

Thanks!

If only a Splazer was hidden somewhere around there.

There's a big post on this same page that explains in quite a bit of detail what rocket race is. It even has a link to queue it up for download...

I'm having a problem with screenshots. I put them on my file share but they don't show up on b.net. Also my rank is less than it should be. B.net problem?

Can't find the answer to this anywhere:

If I'm playing with a local guest on Live matchmaking, can my guest use a headset/voice IP ?

We couldn't get two headsets working on one console when a friend of mine tried yesterday. Maybe we were doing something wrong, but I doubt it.

I need to sign up under this group thing when I get out of work. I have yet to try out a custom game type.

Speaking of the ending after the credits
did anyone else find it really sad? While Cortana is talking to him, he puts his weapons away, gets in the chamber and flatly tells her to wake him when she needs to. It's like he feels as though he would have been better off dying. Leaving Cortana to float alone for maybe years, damn. Especially with all the shit she's been through. War was his only purpose, seems like he would rather sleep until the next one comes.

Where did this theory come from?

There's a substantial thread on the Bnet forums where people are trying to figure it out. I don't think that's set in stone considering nobody outside of Bungie has the skull yet, to my knowledge. But this is definitely one thing people are considering.

Last night I played about 5 matches with some friends. Halfway through, I couldn't talk. I have no idea what happened. I could still talk during the pre-match festivities, but when the battle started, no one could hear my voice. Any idea why? My settings were correct (and unchanged from when they could hear me) and I know about proximity voice.

Those were my thoughts exactly.

Seriously.

That's fucking retarded. How could anyone ever figure that out without it being told to them?

I tried something like that. Can't remember the skulls I had activated... but yes lol, I couldn't get past the first fight either.

Question about a skull. I found one on the first level
right after the first fight by a rock
. I picked it up but it won't activate, am I doing something wrong?

Edit: Figured it out, no achievement for this one.

Halo 3 is much like this thread. Overwhelming. There's so much content and attention to detail that... well you can't take it all in by playing the campaign just once.

Love you Bungie!

Yeah it really is sad. She even says she'll miss him to no response. Then again there is more to the Chief. I refuse to believe he only rescued her for the Index. His character confuses me sometimes. Remember in Halo 1 in the escape pod that marine said he didn't want to die out there so MC gives him a reassuring pat on the shoulder? We don't see that side of him anymore. He also leaves Johnson in the control room wtf? What happened to leave no man behind? Especially Avery.

The MEGG says hi.

EDIT: to be clear, bungie has always had easter eggs that were nigh impossible to discover. from Meg in H1, to IWHBYD in H2, bungie likes to challenge it's fans, and the fans like beat those challenges.

Where did this theory come from?

This theory came from looking through the game's files in a hex editor. They found the item name skull_daddy on the
Covenant level
. Then, they found that, in particular, in the room with the rings, each one has a specific name, and there is a event called, "skull_ring_song," which is believed to be the tone that plays when you jump through the rings in the correct order. Immediately following that even marker, it says, "award daddy skull." Who knows, though. It's all speculation now.

I have a bungie.net profile and I am playing halo, but it shows " no service record". is this just a symptom of the borked bungie servers right now or do I need to do something extra to link up for halo 3 (my halo 2 stats are showing).

edit: nvm , had the wrong email addy in there
