dont get me wrong this game is A+

but some of you guys have you dick so far up Master Chiefs ass its amazing:lol
if you think this game looks anything close to Gears quality you need to get your eyes checked

Once again, neither the models nor the textures look as good as Gears, but gears sacrifices scale and number of ennemies for graphical fidelity. Seeing a scarab walk around, surrounded by 5 ghosts, 4 warthogs and being able to zoom in on the ~5 to 10 ennemies within the scarab is much more impressive than anything I saw in Gears, imo.

PS: Halo3 lighting shits over Gears'. No contest.

There's clearly a trade-off in place between scale and detail. The Gears characters and other elements have a lot more detail on them than the relatively clean look to Halo 3. But the final battle area of the first level had a good ~30 guys running around over a pretty big and complex area, and I never saw that in Gears either. I think it's an apples to oranges thing. Gears is still a stunner, and that's never going to change. Halo is doing its own thing, as well.

Edit: wow, three versions of the same reply. :lol

just got back from bestbuy south side edmonton. got my standard edition, poster, headset and shirt plus $5 off since a nice couple infront of me gave me their preorder since they changed their version.
the line was long, not wii long but pretty long... wrapped around two sides of the building and since i was near the end it took 2 hours to get through. bb should use the customer service checkouts when they do these things to speed things up.

tons of copies left over too. i'd say about 100 cat helmets and 500+ of the other versions. good to see microsoft exceeding demand.

The midnight launch at the HMV at downtown Vancouver was near empty, so I had no problems picking up a copy. Played some multiplayer first off and had a bunch of fun. I haven't played any Halo at all since the beta so I'm absolutely terrible. I had some fun launching a Mongoose off the blast ramp thing.

Played the first main area of the game and really enjoyed it. The game flows really well, and it's incredibly beautiful. The lighting and water effects are the areas where this game really excels.

The gravity hammer is pretty damn fun to use, though I'm still getting a feel for how close I have to be for it to work. Dual welding the little handheld shot gun (forgot the name of this) in multiplayer was great too.

Well, 22,5 hours left for me. So close now:D.

Went to my local store 30 minutes ago, but they refused to sell it. I could try some other stores though, but I...oh well. Believe.

just got my UK copy and did level 1. I expected ALOT more considering the hype, im sure it will get better though.

do you have any problems trying to play with US people?

i was able to play 3 online games yesterday. all were in US

NO. JAGGIES.
Really? Actually, I would say it's the most jaggied next gen experience I've had so far. It's pretty terrible actually and it's my biggest complaint about the game. The clean astethics lose a lot of it's charm due to this. I'm hearing some folks say it's better on VGA though.

so much for limited?I am suprised with so many helmets, my GS had none left

big stores got tons of each version. some bestbuys are getting 1500+ copies of the game overall. so i imagine there's probably 300 or so cat hats. most people seem to be buying the special edition.

Sorry? Do I have to bust out a digital camera and take pictures or something? is it going to be that kind of thread?

I'd have a hard time believing that YOU think this game is some sort of aliasing-fest?

Simply put, there is quite obviously AA at work here. There isn't any stairstepping/shimmering going on, especially not to any greater degree than any other game out there. Bioshock and Gears included.

let me clarify something for you Blim--remember that direct feed shot that someone posted that was mosaic'd out the ass? That is exactly what I speak of when I talk about 'jaggies'. The game is simply miles beyond that, in terms of image quality.

Secondly, I don't have any reason to 'bullshit' people, man. as it stands, my word doesn't amount to much in the way of persuading people to think one way or another, especially considering every single one of them (in this thread) are going to experience the game firsthand, for themselves. I can only communicate my impressions, and people can choose to agree or disagree at whim. But I don't make a business of making false claims to people. I certainly have nothing to gain from it.

You're wrong. I played on my computer monitor all day, the jaggies were very noticable. The game isn't running any sort of AA. When viewed on a tv, it is much less noticeable. Its quite clear that there's no AA in this game, but it doesn't stop it looking smooth on a tele.

edit: it could be running 2xaa and the scaling on my monitor exaggerates the aliasing. Anyhow, its not a pretty sight when the heavy aliasing occurs.

Also of note: I did notice the screengrabs produce an anti-aliasing effect, so I dunno if that plan would work m0dus.

It's noticable in some aspects but whatever, it's not deterring my experience with it.

yup. i am playing it on my laptop screen. its really very smooth.

If anyone EVER... I mean EVER criticizes Halo's art, then show them a cap of
the enormous waterfall at the cartographer.
Holy crap

Right now, I am at
the part where you're taking down the shields at the three towers. I just finished taking down mine. Arbiter took down his. I'm on the hornet flying towards Johnson.

Scale sure is small in Gow but still.....i guess Unreal tournament 3 will finish this talking since it has "halo" scale + Gow graphics and a lot more ;)

My hands fell asleep. I Keep Dying on Heroic. I started out on Normal but then decided to do Heroic.

I'm at the later part of Tsavo Highway. Brutes everywhere.

I can't be the only one seeing a massive disparity between peoples' experiences with the game? and understanding that there are literally DOZENS of possible configurations of 360 video setups (Component, HDMI, VGA, extended/ehanced/Standard, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, 480p) It would be ludicrous to assume that everyone would experience the same degree of image quality. I'm not calling you a liar by any means, I'm simply saying that, for me, the experience has been nearly perfect, in terms of visual quality.

Maybe I'm just damn lucky. honest to goodness, the game is not jaggy on my monitor. I'm tempted to take screenshots, but the camera tends to flatter the LCD image.

edit--and thomz, the game most certainly IS running AA. No question.

not enough AA for my liking :P
The game plays like a dream. Thats the main thing

there are tons of little awesome bits in here. like the consoles that have the blue screen of death (was that in the beta?) or this little conversation i just overheard when not going the way i should
about one guy wanting into this room, and the guy on the other side asks for the password. they go back and forth for like a minute. it's just a cute little detail

just finished the first mission on heroic -- sometimes it does feel very like halo 2, with its large packs of relatively weak enemies and its corridor-shaped levels that shunt you from encounter to encounter. but then you happen on a big open area just swarming with enemies, you can approach it in any of a million ways, and you reexperience the magic of the first game -- or maybe something more than that. and man, halo is just fucking fun, down the smallest mechanical details -- landing a pithy grenade when you're outnumbered, braining a brute with your rifle butt just as your clip runs dry, nailing the classic two-shot jackal kill: one in the hand, one in the face. perhaps they haven't rewritten the formula -- but the formula remains totally engrossing.

...but is there one particular guy at bungie who's like "people love getting sniped by jackals they can barely see; it's loads of fun, trust me." oh, halo 2's sniping jackals are back, in perhaps greater numbers -- they can't one-shot you on heroic -- but they'll two-shot you so fast that it hardly matters. anyway, what would it take to get this one hypothetical jackal guy fired? and you could spend his salary on someone who knows how to model human faces?

I play with component cables on 720p on a 70" set. I hardly notice the jaggies. To me it looks like it has the same amount of anti aliasing as Gears.

Haha - that part was great. Makes me wonder if I missed anything else.

Just got back from launch. Gee wiz was that fun. There were 531 reservations for the thing at final count. I think about 137 games were picked up or so. I didn't check. I'll post a video tomorrow when I can get my camera back.

Just back as well. I think there were 594 total reservations at mine, along with 268 pick-ups.

Damn... The making-of is only available in the Legendary Edition right?

And Limited, I think, I didn't watch it because when it was starting up, there was a hilarious warning massage about spoilers, hey it convinced me!

Too many emotions in this thread. Leaving to play Gears.

All agencies have been uninvited to the Halo 3 party. It's now press, celebs, comp winners and industry only.
We were given free Limited Editions as compensation, oh well.

I demand photoshops of Bungie's Jackal Guy

Don' worry Tieno... It'll be worth it. I love this game SO MUCH. The Hammer is my new favorite. Gotta go sleep for an hour and then take my mom to the doctor. :(

109euros down the drain!
Did you finally get a headset? I want to be able to berate you when we play co-op. We'll be men and play REAL co-op (Legendary), unlike SOME people on my friends list.

First I was iffy about the hammer when they first announced it, cause it sounded out of place but latest vi-doc and the gifs made me a believer.

Yeah, I got the wireless headset. I'm not much of a talker online though.

Yeah. But 109euros is still a lot for a student. The write-up on HBO convinced me legendary was the way to go for me. I love commentary tracks.

Why? Tell her to take herself. Tell her that just because she made herself get sick doesn't mean she has the right to boss you around. This is the age of independence. Young people doing what's right. Break away from her controlling grasp and fly free, BlueBlur, fly free.

The one thing about the saved films I'm not too fond of is how you can only view the person who recorded the film in first-person view. All other players can only be viewed in third-person. So if someone kicks your ass, you can't watch how they did it from their view.
