I'm so bad at this in multi

It's actually sort of refreshing :P

A few questions for the vets

Melee attacks: How do they work? I'm assuming different weapons have different damage, is this correct? Yes, heavier weapons typically deal greater damage. Grenade launcher melee from the earlier games were nearly guaranteed one-hit kills, for instance... but sloooow.

Do different weapons also have different ranges? Yes I've been playing a lot of COD4, and that has a very noticable lunge when you knife someone, I repeatedly whiffed melee strikes, despite rushing in at close range while swinging (my opponents do not seem to have a similar problem :P) You get a feel for it, and there are certain weapons that will cause you to lunge forward as much as ten feet or more. COD4 may have learned that trick from Halo 2 actually.

Does hit location matter for melee damage? Rear hits deal more?Yep, there's a considerable damage bonus for hitting someone on the back of the neck.

Am I missing something, or is dual wielding just pure rape at close/close-mid range? At mid and longer, I was vulnerable to either grenades or longer range weapons, but up close, decent dual wield combinations would tear me or my target apart. Can't say for certain on Halo 3 but yes, in Halo 2 dual-wield would overwhelm everything else at medium range and closer. That's one of the imbalances they were supposed to have fixed this time around.

Is there a consolidated guide to the weapons somewhere? I could use a primer on their relative accuracy/damage/melee/etc capabilities in multi, some of them are not at all intuitive (clearly I want to dual weapon X with weapon Y... or not)
Your best bet is the official Halo 3 guide. Probably goes for $20 or so.

I saw one for the Beta on a fansite, but the weapons have been tweaked so much since then that I don't think it's accurate any longer. I'm sure one will emerge in the next few days.

Also, I added the link to the CNBC hub of Halo 3 articles to the OP that siamesedreamer added many pages back. I have't read/watched any of it yet, but it looks like a LOT of stuff.

Just got back with MA HELMUT EDISHEN and the Bungie guys were there!

I got them to sign all over the helmet. So now I have a signed helmet edition. AWESOMENESS +100. SO AWESOME.

There must have been 200+ people there, the line stretched all the way down the street.

Just got back from the launch event at Best Buy in Bellevue, WA. Lots of bungie people where there, Luke included. Had some guy dressed like Master Chief was walking around. Got a free t-shirt and hat. Good times.
I was at Redmond and Bellevue. Sadly I didn't see Luke :( I should have called him.

I took some photos.

here is an idea of how long the line was at Best Buy...

i will need to ask this. where people play the most? in which lobby? yesterday i only played in the training. because i didnt know any other place to go. i dont even know if i can make it open for everything. so i was stuck with 4 player death match only :lol

And might I say... Needler is back baby! Got my first non-storyline achievement by pumping a full clip of needles into a brute. So satisfying.

How many new weapons are there? The mauler has been pretty useless for me so far.
Try dual-wielding the Mauler. I destroyed with two of them in a few MP matches.

●Grenades
Spike Grenade | Incendiary Grenade | M9 Fragmentation Grenade | Plasma Grenade

●UNSC Weapons
Spartan Laser | Assault Rifle | M6G Pistol | M7 Caseless SMG | M90A Shotgun | Battle Rifle | Sniper Rifle | Rocket Launcher

●Covenant Weapons
Plasma Pistol | Plasma Rifle | Needler | Carbine | Beam Rifle | Brute Spiker | Brute Mauler | Brute Shot | Gravity Hammer | Energy Sword | Fuel Rod Cannon

●Support Weapons
Plasma Turret | Machinegun Turret | Missile Pod | Flamethrower

Bold items new, though some weapons, like the pistol and needler, have been changed so much that it's basically a new weapon now. There may be few more not on the list. (Also, all of the Equipment is obviously new.)

How busy was it at redmond towncenter?

I only saw Luke like walk around the line one time then never again. Must have went elsewhere.

Melee- you have to be within 'striking distance' some melee weapons have an increase damage i.e. Brute shot (massive blade) and the plasma sword

Hit location- the front is pretty much anywhere, however a single strike to an opponent's back is an assassination i.e. instant kill- get working on those stealth skills!

Yes dual wielding at close range can be very effective, however, this can be mitigated by rapid movement (i.e. getting them to miss) and also only going into close range encounters with a close range weapon. If you have long range, stay a good distance away and you will see the former raper become the rapee!!

Hope this helps, now how do I kill 5 hours while pretending to work- damn this oe day later release date!

Thank god i went to a Gamestop that just opened, there were only a dozen or so people.

I was home at 12:08.

I played three hours straight of campaign, good stuff! I'm halfway through Tsavo highway. Awesome vehicle stuff going on. And the brutes are hella tough, especially the first time I went up against a chieftan with a gravity hammers in
Crow's Nest
I'm loving so far.

HALO THREE BABY!

I like Team Objective and Big Team Battle.

Wow, Bungie... this is the magic of Halo: CE all over again times ten for me. I have to say I felt very uneasy after playing Halo 2 on launch night, but this.. wow. I've made it through five levels in about three and half hours on normal. I'll beat the game then play it for realz on Heroic (by myself) or Legendary (with a friend).

Saved films is godlike. SOOOO much fun to watch what you just did from any angle in any way. Forge is going to keep this fresh for years and years. I used to just go in solo and screw around in MP maps, but Forge actually makes it worth it now (not to mention its usefulness for MP and such). And the campaign doesn't suck this time. No offense but Halo 2 was a boring hacked clusterfuck as often as it was amazing, but Halo 3 has been pure win all throughout so far. I'm sure there may be at least one turd level, but you've done it right this time.

No more fucktarded guitar/alt music. This is Marty at his very best IMO. If you disagree you're wrong. The music is godlike and comes in EXACTLY where it works best.

Bungie = redeemed.

Heads up UK people - just got the Limited edition from GAMEPLAY, which was shipped using standard delivery yesterday.

Discs were loose and indeed scratched!

Cool. Where was it being sent from?

Edit: Hampshire? Hm. I guess that's why it was so quick.

it is a great game. I think the graphics are acceptable with the sheer scale of the game. Antialiasing would have been nice though. 9.5/10

I got my UK CE today and both disks are fine but the case is damaged! sucks, but ive got a Legendary Edition coming tomorrow.

There was definitely AA showing on my set. One of the first things I noticed how there were fewer jaggies than the beta (especially looking at the weapons in your hand). I did notice some jaggies on distant geometry but nothing out of the ordinary for games this gen.

I went in expecting Halo 2 HD, but what I got was some very impressive visuals. AWESOME texture work, with few exceptions, and a good framerate, contrary to what people were saying on this forum earlier today (yesterday).

i've only played level 1 and didnt really notice jaggies until I came to
where the Sgt was being held
the view from the cliff was so jaggy i couldnt believe it. Graphically, i dont think it is exceptional like gears, or bioshock, but it is quite nice. The humans look terrible.

Just finished playing through to Tsavo highway. Heroic is being a biatch, but god, the game is rewarding.

also, for the record, I'm playing on an Elite through an HDMI connection, on a Syntax-Brillian Olevia 32 inch LCD HDTV, at 1320x768. I went through the work of properly calibrating the brightness and contrast controls utilizing the calibration disc.

No Jaggies.

here, let me repeat that in bold for effect:

NO. JAGGIES.

The game looks smooth as silk. If you are indeed experiencing the dreaded jagfest, it's quite likely that your contrast is turned up TOO HIGH, or your sharpness is simply jacked up.

Same here. Im using VGA and its gorgeous.... simply, simply stunning lighting and no no no no no no jaggies.

Game is impressive, probably best skies i ever seen in a video game.

but still, graphically, Gears wins.

In a vacuum, yes, but the fact that you only have 8 ennemies on screen at the same time at most puts a damper on its graphical superiority and makes gameplay a lot shallower than in halo, imo.

Give me a break. The humans look terrible? They do not.

AGREED
this game looks uneven-
Very good in some places(out doors)
really ugly in others(some indoors)
even though this game looks great I do agree that is not even close to Gears or Bioshock

Once again.... ART STYLE DOES NOT = GRAPHICS.

OMFG, Frankie in machinima on the Legendary Edition Bonus DVD. His lines are classic.

:lol :lol

Like I say ive barely played it, but every time a human appears I was immediately un-immersed by noticing the poor humans. In particular I noticed the akward walking animation, the Sgts ear, the womans lips and hair. They all looked like they were using assests from 2000.

You are right, Halo 3 scale is a lot bigger than Gears, and the gameplay is definitely more fun (4 COOP is a blast).

Well I picked it up a few hours ago at the Burbank Best Buy. The first time I went (maybe around 12:20) there was a line around the building. I left for a little while, maybe half an hour or so and I was able to walk right in and pick up both LE copies of the game (while the people who actually preordered their game were still waiting in another line), along with the Halo Xbox and WiC CE...

I played a few hours of co-op with my friend, and it was classic Halo (which of course is good). Actually we got lost a couple of times, including at the very begining after the NPCs climb up a hill or something... My LE copy was loose in the case and got a little scratched up, but I plan on either selling it or taking it back so I'm not worried about that because it works.

There were definately jaggies on the Aquos (sp?) sets we used today. Overall they were minor enough that I didn't notice them during the action, but they really stood out when looking at some of the decorators, and a few other areas.

Sorry? Do I have to bust out a digital camera and take pictures or something? is it going to be that kind of thread?

I'd have a hard time believing that YOU think this game is some sort of aliasing-fest?

Simply put, there is quite obviously AA at work here. There isn't any stairstepping/shimmering going on, especially not to any greater degree than any other game out there.

There is definitely AA at work. I would recommend EVERYONE play with either VGA or HDMI if they can. Much worse with component.

Blim are you saying is an aliased jag fest?

dont get me wrong this game is A+

but some of you guys have your dick so far up Master Chiefs ass its amazing:lol
if you think this game looks anything close to Gears quality you need to get your eyes checked

Interesting. We had Elites, but they were setup using the component cables for some reason. I'm going to set up the new 360 I got with HDMI, so I'm curious how it compares.
