I would never ask for anything in return - all I've ever hoped for was good discussion and people to play Halo with, as far as any kind of exchange goes. That said, I've taken the MVP award Microsoft gave me to be plenty of reward for my past (and future) participation, which has led to some free games (XBLA and retail), swag (the Mountain Dew/Slurpee box-o-loot from this week) and access to the MS community folks. Frank and Luke got me into the IMAX event when I arrived late, and in general I've been very well taken care of - far more than I ever expected (which was nothing, other than the excellent games and community work Bungie provides everyone).

I'm happy.

He's had this pasted and ready since the start of this thread, waiting and hoping for someone to say something.

Hum - here I am, thinking that Xbox 360 is doing 'fine' and bringing in a lot of cash for Microsoft. I quess I forgot about all the re-furbs and replacement-units they have had to ship.

Anyway... Halo 3 can't come soon enough. I want that game NOW.

GOT THE GAME.

NYC GAFfers: St. Marks Games (they're called something else now) got about 250 copies today. There were about 5-6 people always coming in or waiting to buy it, so they said they might sell out by the end of the day.

I got it there too, but was a little hesitant at posting the place/number.
Really good people there, didn't want to risk them flying above the radar and incurring a fine or anything of that nature.

I thought about that, but they're not being very discreet about it (they've got signs in their windows saying they have it in stock). Plus, I'm just looking out for my GAFfers. :D

That's okay, maybe someday we'll meet in matchmaking and you can stick me with an incendiary grenade.

I don't think there are any indie game stores around here. :(

Oh well, enjoy the weekend guys!

My one indie game store that always comes through in the clutch and breaks a street date isn't going to break it for Halo until Monday morning. At that time what's the point.

Just created an amazing map in Forge on High Ground, I setup teleporters all over the bit leading up to the gate, then some nutterputs fusion coils all around, and when you set one off they all go off. There's debris everywhere and constant explosions like a vortex. This is the only thing that's made the game slowdown so far so I'm pretty impressed. If anyone wants to play it just check my file share.

It's 5 hours.

There's a video floating around the net which shows two guys beating the game on Legendary. It takes 3 hours, and they prove this with Titanic playing in the background. Right as the game ends, the move is at the point where Jack and Rose are on top of the ship as it plunges into the icy water.

Titanic > Halo 3

Microsoft is holding an event at downtown Toronto starting in 5 min. from 3pm to 9pm I believe. I'm in class now so afterwards I'll be taking some pics for you to see.

Oh, and Halo 3 will be playable :D

umm, getting Halo 3 NEARLY 24 HOURS EARLY is the point. I'd sob with joy if God delivered that opportunity to me. ::returns to praying::

You've got PM, BTW.
And you've got an XBL FR, BTW. Acronyms aplenty. Don't check it if you haven't dealt with that FR spoiler problem of a few days back though.

Anyone up for some Halo 2 now?

That was me and had nothing to do with the teleporters. I made it so the fusion coils respawn instantly (Go to the forge item menu, highlight fusion coils, press x and set 'run-time minimum' to the same as the amount of fusion coils you've placed). That's also the way to make the elephant fly (and stay flying :D)

While the
Elephant is exploding all over the place,
is it possible to
remain in the driver's seat and survive?
You would obviously have to
be invulnerable...

I doubt any of that is actually spoiler material (100% MP), just don't want to piss anybody off.

You can't stay in the drivers seat whilst it's upside down, though you can stay in the control room area (not sure what it's called, the place where the elephant controls are). I have an awesome film of me getting thrown out of the control room mid flight landing half way down the elephants side running along it and jumping back the control room (the elephant is now upside down). I'll post some pics as soon as bungie.net is fully online. I've managed to stay in for about 2 minutes whilst it's flying and am making a custom forge game, last man standing where everyone has one life and spawns on the elephant, one person ignites the fusion coils and see who stay onboard the longest.

Edit:
You don't have to be invulnerable, it makes it more fun if you're not :lol

Anyone have any luck buying the game early in Ohio?

I'm in Ohio, no luck, called every cleveland area indie game store, no luck. Have a place that normally breaks street dates but they're going to start selling monday morning, to late for my tastes. I'm calling sandusky area indies next.

Wow, I was going to be playing on my 22" monitor and I thought that was bad.

Got it 2 days ago in West Chester Ohio from a friend who works at a little store. =)

Living in Ohio, I could probably name the one non-corporate store in West Chester, Ohio. Be careful, the contractual penalty Microsoft could hit them with for breaking the date could be enough to kill a mom & pop game store altogether.

Nice review without spoilers:

Brought to you in association with Argos – the Halo 3 gamers shop of choice

If you want a Halo fan’s review you have come to the wrong place. I enjoyed Halo, I thought it was a pretty good game. It had some great things in it like the weapons and combat. It also had some shit things in it like the repetition and backtracking. In general though, it’s regarded as a great game and rightly so. Halo 2 on the other hand I found to be terribly generic, very boring and ultimately a bit shit. Given how I feel about Halo 2 I really wasn’t expecting much from Halo 3. The Hype Train called at my station but I didn’t get on and I ignored all the superlatives being used about the game by both Bungie and Microsoft.

Colour me surprised then if the game hasn’t turned out to be much better than I thought it would. At this point I should slip in a caveat, because my expectations are probably lower than yours and I’m pleasantly surprised by the goodness within the game. If you’re expectations are that the game will change your life, make you a man and ultimately get you laid then you are going to be very disappointed indeed. It’s a game for fucks sake, not a way of life, get over it.

Fortunately for you the game lays its cards on the table pretty much straight away. The general flow of things is as follows:

• Game starts off good
• Game gets fucking awesome
• Game settles down into something really good
• Oh fuck it’s just got awesome again
• Game settles down into something really good again
• More fucking awesomeness ensues
• Game loses it’s way a little
• Game picks up
• Game Over

Not hugely scientific I know but it gets my point across. As you can tell from the above, Halo 3 is in itself a small conundrum. In many ways and occasions it really does have moments of gloriousness guaranteed to put a smile on the face of any gamer. It has enough surprises to keep you entertained and on your toes but it doesn’t have it constantly throughout. I don’t think any game could do that actually, and if it did I’d probably be a shit eating vegetable by the end of it. In fact it’s fair to say that you appreciate the great moments Halo 3 throws your way all the more because of this. Graphically the game is also a mixed bag. It always looks good though and in places it looks genuinely spectacular and very beautiful. Inside areas are probably the most ordinary but some of the outside vista’s and scenes the game presents are a real sight to behold and genuinely gorgeous.

The frame rate is generally solid with the odd dip and I’m not going to get hung up about it for two reasons:

1. The frame rate dipping isn’t actually that bad
2. The frame rate dipping isn’t actually that bad

Of course if you expect perfection then you are going to be disappointed, so be realistic and accept a smooth and steady frame rate with the odd very slight dip that doesn’t impact game play at all and is barely noticeable. Rest assured that Halo 3 has moments that will satisfy and even exceed your graphical expectations, but it won’t do it all the time, ok?

Audio wise the game is a great success. Not only is the music score stunning, but it is rousing when it needs to be and more mellow in quieter moments. Halo 3 has one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard in a game with a quality more usually lavished upon movies than on games. Voice acting is excellent throughout, I can’t be bothered dropping any names (Keith David) but there are a few well known larynx’s providing the voices for the characters.

The combat though is gripping and spectacular and Halo 3 contains hands down the best Halo fights ever. Seriously, I said that in my first impressions and I still feel that way. There are new enemies and weapons and with the fantastic AI the whole thing combines to give you some really thrilling encounters. Even on normal difficulty you will die and have to re-try certain areas, honing your tactics or changing them altogether. Heroic and Legendary will kick your ass repeatedly. I can’t spoil certain encounters even though I’d love to, but you are in for some really epic fights, and not always against enemy soldiers either. Your squad mates are great fun to watch and actually pretty handy with their weaponry, so feel free to hang back a little and let them help you out in a sticky spot.

One of my favourite moments in Halo was chucking a grenade into a bunch of enemies and watching them scatter or be blown in varying directions. That remains as satisfying as ever and I hope to God that there is an infinite grenade cheat somewhere in the game that will allow me to fulfil my fantasy of running around using nothing only grenades. The thought of it brings out both the big kid and the mass murderer in me.

Towards the end during a certain section I found my interest waning a little, but it’s testament to Halo 3 that this was really the only time during the game that this happened. While it mostly stays fresh and invigorating I found this section to be fairly generic and dare I say it slightly boring. This is a personal thing however and your mileage may vary based on how many FPS games you’ve played in the past.

Story wise the game is a great success and is both interesting and more importantly, makes sense. Cut scenes are numerous and always entertaining to watch and carry the story along with gusto, you’ll be glad when they arrive as they give you a little break from the action.

Co-op play is something I haven’t tried but I’d be utterly amazed if it isn’t even more compelling than the single player game. The thought of taking on some battles with friends fills me with excitement, I literally can’t wait. Multiplayer couldn’t be reviewed as the servers are down so perhaps I’ll revisit these two points given that they are such huge parts of the game. Given these facts the score below represents single player campaign play only.

It’s great to be able to say that Halo 3 has far exceeded my own personal expectations of the game. It’s unputdownably good for the vast majority of the game. It's not all rosey in the garden mind you, there is some backtracking though and it's not as long as I'd like it to be (probably around 10-12 hours or so). If you’re a Halo fan it’ll probably make you cry with happiness. If you’re just a normal gamer then you’ll find that it really is one of the best games of this year and I can see it slotting into the top 10 great game lists for a long time to come. I take my hat off to Bungie, I didn’t think they’d be able to pull it off but you know what? I was wrong.

9/10
