Urgh, no net and no Halo makes me one sad puppy.

I've been trying to recreate Valhalla with the Far Cry 2 editor with the only result being bitter tears of failure. =(

I've verbally slugged it out with Microsoft again, and no thanks to UPS, my console should be hopping along to get repaired.

At the very least, I should see the drop of ODST and the final Halo 3 maps.

How've y'all been? =)
HEYYYY, hope to see you on the interwebz sometime soon!

Just incase you didn't already know...Ascendant Justice will be on the running riot podcast tonight and we would love to have some GAFers join us if possible.

An incident from last night's BTB romp.

Major Hayes and I are stealing flags. It's what we do. We drive in, snag the flag, and drive on out, airplane-style.

J1.jpg

We cap them the same way.

J2.jpg

I figure, by now we've got a routine going. So I head up to the man canon a second time and see right away that something is different: there be red x's ahead.

J3.jpg

Luckily, I has a rocket launcher. I bail out and take aim at the defenders. What could go wrong?

J4.jpg

There's three of'em.

J5.jpg

This is my rocket, straight and true, roaring toward its target.

J6.jpg

This is Major Hayes in a Warthog, landing directly in front of my rocket.

J7.jpg

This is me murdering Major Hayes, while a slightly perplexed trio of defenders stand by and watch.

I'd like to note that I had zero kill, zero assists and zero deaths in that game. But one betrayal. And I was the MVP.

Dude, you've been gone for quite a while. I was starting to get worried!

Good you will be back, I still have to wait until ODST to play any of the new maps because my DLC still won't load up, now I have to wait it out. :(

I recreated Valhalla in Far Cry's editor a while back and didn't find it that hard. I mean it wasn't easy, but it probably took me half as long to create that as it's taken to recreate Beaver Creek in forge. Here's a link to the video of my Far Cry map.

Glad to hear you're coming back soon.

Go back into Far Cry 2 and remake Beaver Creek, Terminal, and Relic, plz.

God damnit that editor shits all over Forge. Hope we get something similar for Reach.

Of course it "shits all over Forge." Forge was never meant to be a full-blown map editor. It was initially meant to change weapon placements and alter gametypes on maps. Bungie just took it to the farthest it can go with Sandbox and Foundry.

If you even remember the pre-release hype, it was destined to do more, but with only two maps that are designed entirely to base around, it's fallen short of expectations. Little map alternates have been made to maps such as The Pit, High Ground, Guardian, etc. You do not see a Team Doubles map specifically altered for the playlist, you do not see maps altered for FFA, etc. Most of them seem built for 4v4/5v5 Slayer/CTF battles. The only true changes altered by Forge that have been accomplished in MM is the MLG variants. Spare with mentioning Team Snipers, SWAT, and Heavy variants.

Also, it took a month for a fusion coil to be removed from Valhalla in Forge. Not that is has any matter to Forge itself, just food for thought.

That's the shortcoming of the implementation of Forge, not Forge itself. You can do all those things with the tool - Bungie has chosen not to.

On a related note, it absolutely boggles my mind that Standoff Heavies still exists. Two snipers, two lasers and two rocket launchers per team? And no adjustment to the spawns (which were set when the map was designed without any snipers on it)? It's hands-down the worst gametype I've play in matchmaking.

I really, really wish the default gametypes would be tweaked more, if not just to fix known issues but for some variety. And while I'm complaining - is there a reason two-bomb Assault is not in BTB? There's a little Neutral and One-Bomb, but no Multi-bomb.

That's unfair. That was certainly not Forge's fault, but that of a certain playlist manager.

What pre-release hype? Before the game hit, what I got from the videos I saw that featured Forge and people from Bungie explaining it was that it was meant to alter weapon placement and alter gametypes for the MM maps. It was never meant to be anything more than that, but due to what you could do with it, Bungie took it to its limit with Foundry and Sandbox.

The rest of your post deals with actual implementation into matchmaking of what can be done with Forge rather than Forge itself.

The only reason why I said anything was because I've seen some comments in this thread (and in other Halo threads that appear) that imply that Forge was set out to be a full-blown map editor when it clearly wasn't. I wasn't trying to be "Captain Obvious."

Did you ever get films and submit your Standoff variant to ATLAS? I have a version of Standoff with Ghosts (could be changed to Choppers, so those two, in my view, are often gone underused in Halo 3 MM) and removal of the Spartan Laser, and besides the weapon replacements and alternatives, I changed the spawn locations.

Would submit this to ATLAS myself if I got films. I'm sure the spawns themselves are much better since they're not ravaged and out in the wide open area.

Like my Team Snipers revision, all spawns are either inside the base, behind a hill, or behind a barrier.

I didn't knock Forge for that, necessarily.

I'm going with Dax on this one. They never ever hyped forge up to be something it wasn't pre-release. I remember it actually being a late addition and we didn't even know about it till the end of development.

damn that sounds like fun...i just got off though : /

When I first heard of Forge I was hoping for a much more robust set of features and settings.

I imagined a game mode within MM where one player was granted forge ability on each team and couldn't damage or get damaged but could create for his team weapons, vehicles, equipment, certain scenery items. All of which could be predetermined what he could and could not do within the settings. Essentially playing a demi-god of sorts for his team and pitting him against the other god's followers. Imagine one team saying "Give me a Scorpion" followed by the other teams reaction "Hit me up with a laser please almighty" :lol

Now you actually could do this in Forge mode but would require a bunch of honor rules and a lot of pre explanation and whatnot.

The program itself isn't a big problem. They talked about a variety of things that can be put into customs, MM, whichever. But the problem has been it has not been implemented as so. As I said to Backflip, it's not a knock on Forge itself, but the management.

That said, a Far Cry 2 map editor on a Halo game would be unreal. Forge is just something that's passable, but in a meh-state of mode.

As for MM, it anybody is playing Squad Battle I'll be interested in games. Missed out on Team Flag, and Social Skirmish can lol.

I don't think there would be any point. If the spawns or balance on those maps were to be adjusted, they would be by now without any prompting like that. Bungie has the tools to make the adjustments, and I know they have heard the criticism and requests from the community to make changes. They have their reasons for not doing so. (Though, I don't know what they are.)

I do like the idea of brining variants of existing maps to customs nights, though. I'm doing some small adjustments to Avalanche, Valhalla, Sandtrap and Standoff - mostly small shifts in the vehicle, weapon and equipment mix and placement - with the aim of making them play a bit differently. If others bring new stuff to play, I won't bother busting them out. But when people are tired of Sandbox variants, they'll be something to fall back on.

You both make good points. Matchmaking could be so much more. Someone hire an assistant for Shishka or a second playlist manager. Halo 3 support should be more robust as far as the actual game is concerned; all the added Bungie.net features have been great (redesigns, file sets, etc.) but the actual game's matchmaking playlists have received little favorable attention.

There's no ODST beta.

I hope the ODST armor will be available on Avatar Marketplace soon.

Going to deck out a lot of my online avatars across the net into ODSTs to prepare for teh hype. :P

I think photobucket is scaling back on their bandwidth; I've seen a bunch of avatars that are the "bandwidth exceeded" crapola (plus Ghaleon's stuff in the OP). I had to start another account because I have no idea when it's supposed to reset.

But those magnets are awesome. I'd love to slap those on my toolbox in the garage.
