God damn it, Vessel in doubles is fucking annoying. It pisses me off that we have to put up with maps like this just to play doubles. Once the other team gets the middle, you spawn in the same 'bucket' area every time, and you just get grenaded and BR'd within seconds. Ugh.

I've played a few of the other Sandbox variants and they all kind of suffer from the same spawn problems, really irritating.

Assault Rifle gives Battle Rifle an impromptu field cleaning. 3 round bursts of immeasurable bliss. Spent shell casings litter the linen and they holster together in an intoxicating smoke haze.

That's kind of neat, but this Halo anime thing sounds really stupid to me. But that might stem from my huge dislike for anything anime.
Oh, come on! Don't dismiss this just because you're racist
kidding
.
Have you seen The Animatrix? Most of those shorts didn't look like what you'd usually think of as "anime", they were fantastic animated shorts that happened to be made (in large part) by Japanese people.

I can't wait to see more of this, I hope these shorts will be as varied in art styles and feel as the Animatrix ones were.
I would consider selling my vital organs to see Peter Chung's interpretation of Halo.

No, I haven't, but then again I haven't seen anything Matrix related, though I've been meaning to (at least the first movie).

The sequels have moments of absolute idiocy, but there's a pretty interesting universe with some interesting sci-fi concepts hidden behind all the action movie wankery in slow motion.
I wish the franchise didn't die so completely, because The Animatrix especially shows that there were many different things you could still do with it.
I hope the Halo universe will get the same treatment, because this UNSC "OO-RAH!" bullshit can only go so far.
Halo: Uprising was a step in the right direction, it was a new kind of story in the universe, but it went absolutely nowhere (in addition to being kinda crappy in general).

Oh, the official Halo Legends press release also says this:

A preview of select “Halo Legends” episodes will first debut on Xbox LIVE, the largest gaming and entertainment network in the world, starting this fall through a new experience called Halo Waypoint. Launching in fall, Halo Waypoint will be a new destination for “Halo” fans on Xbox LIVE around the world. It will inform fans of the latest “Halo” news and activities, and grant access to content ranging from podcasts, trailers and screenshots, to exclusive video footage you won’t find anywhere else. It also will provide a new challenge for “Halo” gamers with a career system and player rankings tied to both in-game and out-of-game accomplishments related to “Halo.” In addition to the limited, early episode premieres, Halo Waypoint will debut several behind-the-scenes videos that chronicle the making of “Halo Legends.”

What?!

Watch the first movie, then watch The Second Renaissance from The Animatrix. That's all you need and the experience will not be ruined by the rest of that garbage.

Animatrix, huh?
The scene with the robot turning against its master, I think it was a lady, gave me chills.
I didn't really like it but it was extremely well done and had great production values.

Flipyap said:
Bullshit. That's not even the best Animatrix short. All of it is worth watching (maybe except the 3D CGI one made by Square).
I was more referring to the lame-ass two sequels, not the overall Animatrix (should have been more clear). SR is a great start that ties directly into the film in a super cool way.

But I'm sure I'll watch the Halome, much to my wife's chagrin. :D

Just saw that anime thing on hbo. I have to say, I love both mediums/universes on their own, but together...

I just hope one of them isn't some high school romance set in elysium city with a loli mc love interest :lol

I don't remember much of the Animatrix shorts but I know only too well how bad the two sequels of the original movie were. *pukes*

Ah, ok!
The Second Renaissance is nice, but it's 90% story, it's not especially exciting to look at. Stuff like World Record and A Detective Story are just stunning.
The detective one even goes as far as to invent a completely new look for technology, to fit the film noir look, a sort of steampunk-ish mix of modern technology and 1950s typewriters, phones. It's a minor detail, but I love it.
I hope we'll get an AI story in the Halo shorts, like Matriculated, these bits were very fun to read in the books.

So, are we now Halotaku? ^_^ Master-chan is so kawaii!

Oh, and:

Yeah the sequels are ok as movies themselves, I guess... just, don't think of them as Matrix and it won't spoil the universe. That's really the only reason I didn't enjoy them... they just weren't 'Matrix' material.

Really?
I thought Reloaded was especially hard to watch as a movie.
I only caught up on Revolutions long after it came out on DVD, because I was traumatized by Reloaded.
While the last one wasn't a "good" movie either, I thought it was a good addition to the franchise. It added yet more details about the inner workings of the universe, but this time doing so without falling into complete silliness (besides obligatory forced religious "metaphors", but very much a part of the franchise, since the first one). Not that it really matters, with a franchise as dead as this one.
Anyway, it helped that it looked the best of the three and the music was fantastic. I like pretty things.

The best three maps in Halo 3 are:

The Pit
Onslaught
.
.
.
Guardian

It's impossible to make an argument otherwise.

Guardian is crap. Too segmented. Some good sight lines and thats it. Don't like the map. I'd rather play Isolation any day of the week.

I cant even think of a top three....I'm too jaded on them all. Bring on Midship :D

Yeah... Am I the only one from the HaloGAF bunch heading down there? I was able to get a pass for Thursday on ebay at the last minute earlier today. I probably won't make it into the Halo panel, from what I hear the lines are ridiculous. Frankie hook a brotha up yo. I'm going to try to get my hands on ODST or at least catch a glimpse. Hopefully they'll show a new firefight map (won't happen!). I'll post pics tomorrow.

If you can find me at the door and identify yourself properly I will try to get you in. I can't promise shit because fire marshals is hardcore.

IMO none of the maps really suck, they just get paired with the wrong gametypes in MM. 1-Flag 3vs3 on Valhalla is great fun, right? :D

I'm an average player without the pro mentality
or ability :(
, so I enjoy it when any of these come up:

* Construct
* Guardian
* High Ground
* The Pit/Pit Stop
* Valhalla
* Avalanche
* Ghost Town
* Assembly
* Orbital

I'll agree with you, but sadly it's better than any other map that Bungie has made. Narrows can be fun sometimes when it doesn't turn into a grenade-spam-off or snipe-off.

Construct is sometimes fun as well although it sucks in everything but MLG and perhaps SWAT because of radar.

Amplified is trash unless you have host or are playing on a good host.

Avalanche (which I've noticed is a in a lot of peoples' top threes) is just too damn big. An overload of vehicles destroys it. Should have made other ways to take down Hornets -- one Laser doesn't cut it.

Valhalla is a solid map, but is wildly unbalanced. Once a team gains control of the top middle of the map, the game is essentially over, especially considering that the Laser can take out anything that the other team might try to use to get back in the game.

High Ground is just plain terrible. The spawns are the worst I've ever seen.

Snowbound is horrific. Too much of a dichotomy between the top and bottom of the map = not enough cover up top and a frag fest down low. Not a fan.

Isolation is actually not as bad as people make it out to be minus the regens. Lord knows why Bungie has one on each side set to respawn every 30 seconds. Had this not been the case, the map would have been pretty good.

Blackout is fine yet doesn't compare to Lockout. Also, there are only, what, 2 BRs on it? On a map that's created to utilize line of sight? Yeah, that's stupid. Also, the initial spawns are trash and spawning in the bottom during a game is a real bummer as it's difficult to get anywhere without being picked off from above.

Original Foundry is bad. It just doesn't play well.

Standoff is bad. Again, if one team controls the laser and one or both of the warthogs then thy'll easily be able to spawn kill given the crap outside spawns and pull off to an early lead.

Ghost Town is slightly better balanced. It's segmented pretty well, although the top center structure gives itself a little too much to camping.

Rat's Nest is solid for BTB/SQB but it's way too big for 4v4 which it appears in pretty often (Snipers, SWAT, etc).

Sandtrap is just too fucking big for anything. Too many vehicles. All handheld weapons are essentially useless unless you're right up next to the enemy. The idea of mobile flags on elephants is kind of stupid, especially since if your elephant is moved, you never seem to spawn with it.

Assembly is surprisingly solid although the red team seems to have an advantage over the blue team as they tend to blend in to the background more efficiently. The map is great with BRs but I can imagine it sucking hugely with ARs starts.

Cold Storage .... where do I begin? Let's throw every single power weapon and powerup into a small map and add teleporters to every room. Yeah, it worked in Halo: CE. Doesn't work as well in H3. Sure, eventually the powerups and weapons somewhat cancel each other out in terms of taking the other team out, but the match devolves into a battle of camping with rockets and shotgun. Not a fan.

Epitaph. Fucking. Sucks. Why does it show up every other game in Doubles?

Default Sandbox is surprisingly fun. The chopper adds a great element to gameplay. I only wish that there was a little more cover on the more open sections of the map and maybe a little less towards the center of the map.

Last Resort is too damn big for 4v4 yet it shows up all the time. Often turns into a match of snipers which I like in Team Snipers, but not so much when you spawn out in the open with an AR.

Orbital is terrible. Limit/get rid of starting frag grenades and then we'll talk.

The Pit is heaven. Great balance of power weapons/powerups (although Camo in middle green is a bit much -- I wildly prefer MLG The Pit) and cover and hiding spots and everything.

So, yeah, BRING ON MIDSHIP!

Wat. What the hell do you do in your free time, watch reruns of Star Trek? Do you watch movies? Have you seen Titanic or Monty Python or Braveheart? Come on now.

As for the Halo anime thing... more milkin for Microsoft. Now, I'm all for Neil's uber Halo movie, but wtf is this anime stuff? A major movie gets canned and repaced with an anime series? What has this world come to?

Is there a list somewhere of who made what map? It's possible that the same guys who made Construct are the same guys who made Foundry and that Orbital one you all seem to hate.

It's not all that weird. One of those is a low risk project, the other is a huge movie from an unknown director.
There's a good chance these shorts will be far more interesting than the movie could ever be. You know, this video game movie.

Something about the combination and usage of color.
The colors are great, but like all of the shirts, it's very "clip art".
This shirt could be advertising anything, it just happens to have the cover art randomly pasted on it.
It also says PWN in big letters on it. Ugh.

Maps and stuff
Not a bad synopsis though there are a few thing I find wrong with it. Yes, many larger maps show up in smaller gametypes (4v4) when they really shouldn't and play much more poorly because of that. But that shouldn't be counted as a slight against the map.

I'm right there with you on Narrows, Construct, High Ground (though it's great for non-slayer gametypes), Snowbound, Isolation (the spawns really hurt the map), Blackout (sucks with radar and/or ARs), Foundry, Standoff (laser ruins it), Ghost Town, Cold Storage, Epitaph, Orbital, and The Pit.

Valhalla is hurt by the laser but as long as you're not playing 4v4 on the map, a well coordinated push can force even a great opposing team off the hill. Great in all other aspects, much better than Blood Gulch/Coagulation, bu could use a chopper or two.

Avalanche should be more vehicle focused IMO, the original was. My main complain is most of the time people just run around on foot fighting over shotgun because most vehicles can't touch that spot. And the vehicle combat isn't all that spectacular on the map which is why people stick with the shotgun, just a bunch of bullet spammers (warthog, ghost, hornet) with a glaring lack of choppers.

Rat's Nest is not a favorite of mine. Can't quite place why I don't like it but it has something to do with the uselessness of vehicles and the uninteresting level layout in the center. I would replace Ghaleon's Entrenched with this map and never look back.

Sandbox is fun but I don't think the map needs more cover, just the tops of each base need to be neutered so that they're less of a power position. As it stands, there's very little reason to get off of the top of ones base.

Last Resort is a great objective map and plays well in BTB. Shouldn't be in gametypes with any less than 6v6 though (5v5 if objective).

Sandtrap is one of my favorite maps. There are a lot of great vehicle battles to be had on that map, as it was designed for. There's no reason the old elephant variant should exist though, all people do is position so it's hard to get up and ruin CTF matches. Again, shouldn't be in anything smaller than 6v6.

Assembly does indeed suck with AR starts, though I've never noticed any color advantage. Map has too much cover which is the only thing keeping it from becoming a amazing map. The one way glass that makes the bases easier to camp need to go as well as the shield in the middle and the rockets with 4 shots.

Seems like you just don't like vehicles though and are scared of getting in them. Sorta taints your views of vehicle based maps.

Actually, I've been watching The Wire. You should watch it sometime because, you know, it's better than BSG.
Do you watch movies?
Just because I haven't seen a certain movie it means I don't watch movies? I still have Dr. Strangelove to watch on BD before I move on to anything else.
Ew.
Monty Python
Awesome.
Braveheart?
Haven't seen it.

You should take comfort in that you at least know how your teammate ended up with -13 k/d ratio. I have played matches at the same level and wonder every match how it's possible that my teammates made it to the upper 40's. I went from 47 to 41 and back and down a few levels and back and so on and so on. Eventually you realize it's impossible to get to 50 without a team going in with you because there are too much garbage that were boosted up in level that end up on your team. I could only take so many matches getting MVP and still going down in level, beating the same guys each night but somehow you see them progressively go up in level each night while you go down. That was the end of MM for me.

One day Bungie may learn that the rank should be based off of the individual performance and not if the team wins or not. You can't make randoms work together as a team, you can only try. Your dancing teammate is a perfect example of this. No one could boost if it was based on performance rather than their teammates winning the game for them. OMG, a solution to boosting?

In any case, the rank I mentioned above was for SWAT but I also have a 47 or 46 in TS so perhaps I will join you sometime and we can try to form a team that will actually work together. I'd want to brush up first, I'm sure I'm rather rusty as I've taken a several month hiatus to play some looong RPG's.

So so true, I got up to 45 in one of the playlists ( might have been team objective I think) without a group, but it was nigh impossible doing so and took me quite some time. Hell, the only reason I did eventually get up to that level was I got some lucky games one day and got good players and I went on a streak of games.

Not really looking forward to having to do all this again, I should breeze through the first 35 levels or so but after that I might need to find some peeps to group up with :P

My aim is to play mostly social for the next week or two just to practice before I hit any ranked again :)

Am going on now and tonight again if anyone wants to group up for some socials, tag is Fyrh.
