And finally any tips for a noob? I know this is quite a competitive game so I might be in a bit over my head.
Jump into the Basic Training playlist. It's still populated with people who are completely new like yourself. Not sure how familiar you are with Halo, but a couple of things that could be useful - grenades don't activate until they hit something. Once they do, it's a three second fuse. Pay attention to equipment - a power drainer, mine or grav lift can be very effective against a vehicle. Power drains will stall any vehicle for a short period, as will a fully charged plasma pistol shot.
The sword melée on B is almost as powerful as the lunge on RT, but it has a shorter recoil time. In a Swords match, if you counter a lunge with a melée, you will be able to attack again quicker than your opponent and get the kill.
In variants of KotH like Crazy King, the hill moves once a certain time has elapsed. Pay attention to the clock and watch for occasions when it would be better to move to another likely hill point than the current one.
The laser takes five seconds to charge. It is five small beams instead of one large one, and you need to hit your target with about three of them to kill - if you are jumping or turning when you fire you might not hit with all if them.
With scoped weapons, you can click the stick to zoom, but if you hold it in you'll unzoom after letting go. This is very useful for things like the sniper that has two levels of zoom - you can click in to go one zoom level, then click and hold to temporarily zoom further.
Crouching and walking will make you disappear from the radar, but talking will make you visible again. You can also crouch-walk over active tripmines.
If you are aiming directly at a opponent's head, there will be a small red dot in the centre of your crosshairs.
There are probably a few more little things like that that I've left out, but feel free to ask anyone here about something you're not sure about.
EDIT: The Brute Shot and Spiker do slightly more melée damage than other weapons. Plasma-based weapons work best against shields, and a fully-charged plasma pistol shot will take down a full overshield to red health in one shot, which is very useful for VIP.
For flag-based games, the flag timer resets every time someone picks up the flag. If the flag has been in the open for a while, it can sometimes be the best strategy to run at it and pick it up even if you die in the process.
