A ranked 4v4 skirmish playlist needs to be in the game, anyway. Way too many damn social playlists and the Summer Theme ATLAS project won't be long.

Sigh..

Team Flag is kind of fun I guess. I still really don't like Bungie's flag return settings, and some of the maps are awful. Utah Mambo is not well-suited to 5v5 flag, top middle dominates too easily. Avalanche heavies with 10 players is just bizarre.

Almost no-one played Team Objective, though. It's population was below 1,000 for about six months.

Because there were little to no updates to the current maps. Who wants to play 1-CTF on Last Resort with AR's? Who wants to play Valhalla CTF with 8 combined people? Plus early on the massive eruption of VIP variants and Territories. Not to mention gametypes were never changed at all. No CTF Classic added. No flag-respawn timers adjusted for maps, etc.

Also little to no variants of Sandbox and Foundry variants were added. With that type of staleness, it won't be fun to play, of course not. If something is never updated, why expect people to play it?

Anyone know anything about video compression?

I got my Blackmagic working after some tinkering, right now Its only in component quality because I don't even have an HDMI Xbox (day one xbox) but like 20 seconds of recorded uncompressed near-HD video is like 100MB, and I can't be uploading 100 MB files over and over.

I can load it up in Vegas and reencode it, but what would work well where I would get max compression with minimum quality loss?

Easiest (and cheapest) way I found was to use Windows Movie Maker to convert the raw AVI to WMV. There's even a quality setting specifically for Xbox 360 footage.

You make too much sense.

I enjoy 4v4 games on Valhalla, but I don't like Last Resort, and the occasional VIP variants and Territories isn't something to cry about (this is, of course, when they were reduced in weight). Can't say anything on the rest of the stuff.

Because of the
engineer
achievement, maybe that unknown object/being spotted in the trailer was an
engineer
?

I finished listening to the podcast earlier today. There are a couple of things I want to mention. I would assume Joe was seeing higher-ups during E3; maybe discussing how the new IP project and Reach are progressing. I'm looking forward to seeing that stuff regardless of me being a cynic. And also, the Bungie Day hopper sounds great. Hopefully I will find you guys online so I can roll with a decent team. The Recon would be nice but I just want to beat the Bungie dudes. I'm coming for you, Smith!

...In an effort to break away from WoW for a while, I'm gonna get up to a general in all the double xp playlists.

Also, we should totally start up a PAX thing for this year. (I don't wanna pay like $100 more than some of you dudes for a plane ticket, lol)

Who all is planning on attending, or at least pretty sure?

I was planning on coming this year but it looks like I won't have the funds which suck since I was looking forward to meeting you fine folks in the flesh. Oh well, maybe next year.

Why are you spoilering "Engineer" when speculation over it started with publicly available footage?
Some people may not want to know what certain achievements are. Achievements do tell what the game has in store, or, at least, hint at it. Hell, I didn't even know
Engineers
were going to be in the game until they were listed in the achievements.

Giddy.

July Matchmaking updates:
BWU said:
Social
Action Sack

* ADDED Grifball on Grifbox
* ADDED “Team Stickies,” a Team Slayer mode where points are scored by sticking opponents with plasma or brute grenades.
* ADDED “Dodgeball,” an Elimination Team Slayer mode where players attempt to score by sticking opponents or eliminating the enemy team. Best score after five rounds wins. Two community maps were chosen for this gametype.
* Playlist weighting tweaked so that weighting is equal across gametypes, rather than gametype/map pairings. Gametypes with a single map variant (such as Sumo) are more likely to occur, now.
* Sumo Grande updated to have more spawns in the spawn hives with correct attribution to prevent respawns from occurring on the ground level
* Rumble Pit
* Zombie shields restored for Save One Bullet

Ranked
Team Slayer

* Weighting reduced on Mythic maps to fit naturally into the map rotation

Hardcore
Team Snipers

* Mythic Maps added (Optional)

Double EXP Weekends (in order)

* Fourth of July (Heroic/Legendary/Mythic Req.)
* Grifball (Heroic Req.)
* 3 Ball (Heroic/Legendary/Mythic Req.)
* Team Control (Heroic/Legendary/Mythic Req.)
* Living Dead (Social, Heroic/Legendary/Mythic Req.)

7 on the 7th

* BUNGIE VS THE WORLD: 4v4 Social playlist on 36 Community-Made map variants. Win Recon either by defeating Bungie in the playlist or by completing certain metrics to be revealed after the playlist is retired.
Bold: Sounds fun.

For the easily confused:

* Bungie Pro Video is going live on Bungie Day (7/7)
* It’s bundled with Bungie PRO
* All Bungie PRO members get 5 render minutes per month
* Monthly render minutes do NOT roll-over
* You should wait to buy Bungie PRO until on or after 7/7

I'm saving up my render minutes to get Rainin' Goose in HD.

Very minor updates. The stickie variants for Actionsack seem cool, but the playlist itself is rather redundant. I've played it once, got a game called Punchout, I think, and really was not fun whatsoever. I got bored 30 seconds in.

No significant updates elsewhere? Sigh...

You've played one game in it and you call it redundant?

Agreed.

I also find it funny that they made fun of how little variety there is in the double exp weekends during the latest podcast but they keep on pumping out the same ones nonetheless.

Make Flag a perminant unranked playlist and I'll shut up.

Dax01 said:

It's stupid to add updates to a non essential playlists when the real playlists are in dire need of tweaks. Not that I expect you to get it.

I'm amazed Team Flag isn't ranked, or at the very least a constant social list, it's the most fun I've had in Halo in forever, but yet it's regulated to Double XP weekends, so lame.

Hey guys. Official Halo 3 noob here. I bought the game yesterday and am just getting into the online side of things. I've got a couple of questions if you fancy helping me out:

I'm under the impression that the map packs become free after a while as that happened with the first map pack, which i just downloaded. Any ideas when the other two map packs will become free? I'm not really into buying DLC, but some of the online game modes on this game say I require the DLC... :-/

If I want to play some online team capture the flag what playlist do I have to select?

Also how does the exp system work? I've killed players and even come second on a match but I don't seem to have very much exp (only 2 or 3 points), how do I earn it?

And finally any tips for a noob? I know this is quite a competitive game so I might be in a bit over my head.

I would like to see more changes to the existing maps and gametypes. The updates right now seem focused on getting community maps in place (both for matchmaking and the Bungie Day playlist), at the expense of everything else. I know we've been asking for more community content, so it's kind of lame to complain now that it's in the pipe. And I get that Shishka is one person doing a lot, but even small things could go a long way in the other playlists. The Standoff spawns, the flag return times, adding one-flag to BTB, you name it. It would go a long ways toward refreshing the existing playlists.

There are not any plans for the Legendary or Mythic Map Packs to become free. They will however all be included with Halo 3: ODST when it comes out on 9.22.09. The only playlists that you will be able to play in right now will be Social Slayer and Social Skirmish. Skirmish is where you will find your objective game variants. One EXP is gained per win, unless your are in a Double EXP Hopper or a 0 EXP Hopper.

Unfortunately, Microsoft won't allow the Legendary map pack go free, despite every pack Bungie has ever released previously going that route. They did discount the price, though. So right now Legendary and Mythic cost, and there are no announced plans to change that.

BTW, if you haven't also download Cold Storage, which is a stand-alone map and also free.

If I want to play some online team capture the flag what playlist do I have to select?
Check the playlists here: http://www.bungie.net/online/playlists.aspx

They also list what map packs are quired in which playlists. Bungie just integrated the Mythic maps into many of the playlists, so there are not as many left that don't require paid DLC. Probably not what you want to hear, but since MS won't let them go free it's the balance they struck.
Also how does the exp system work? I've killed players and even come second on a match but I don't seem to have very much exp (only 2 or 3 points), how do I earn it?
You get one XP per game you win or tie. The exceptions are Double XP weekends (two, naturally) and the Team Action Sack playlists (which awards zero).

Rehashed dub exp's I see no Instagib.

No changes to any of the real playlists.

Overall I give Shishka an A++ for this the July Update. Good Job DUDE.

Social Skirmish.

Can't say for certain, but I think you earn it based on how many times you win. Were you playing in an FFA playlist?

It's not as competitive as a lot of the people in this thread make it out to be. Stay out of playlists like MLG, Team Snipers, Team Slayer, and Doubles for now.

I'll be happy to play some games with you. Now if you like. GT: dax01

How is that funny? I've played more than 30+ games of MLG. Enough to know I don't like it.

No need to be a jerk. The only thing I said about the update was that two gametypes added in Actionsack sounded fun. No need to be petulant when that's all I've said.

Cheers Dax01 and GhaleonEB. To get EXP does that mean I need to come first in a solo online game and my team needs to win the game in a team game?

Do a lot of people play on the playlists that require the DLC? I've seen about 28,000 players playing on social slayer and that does not require the DLC. So really I'm asking is it worth it and will I get a lot of value out of getting the map packs?

I've found that, for FFA game types, if you get anywhere between fourth and first, you'll gain in experience. I don't play much FFA, so I'm only going off fuzzy memory here. For team games, your team has to win (or tie I think) to gain EXP.

You'll find no shortage of population when it comes to playlists that require DLC. As far as Map Pack quality goes, I think the general opinion falls along this:

Mythic>Legendary>Heroic. Each map pack has been better than the last.

Edit: Again, if you don't mind, we can play some games right now.

@Striker: :lol

What if we get matched against a Bungie team more than once and win both or more times. Moar pryzis????????????

You only get as much value as you put into it. Play the game for a while to see if you like it, and if you do then buy the maps to open up the other playlists and get some variety.

The best thing you can do is to play with people who know the game better than you do. Send some FRs to people on here and get in some games with them. My GT is Self Induced.

You earn XP for placing in the top half. For instance, in a standard two team game, you have to win to gain XP. When playing an FFA with 6 or 8 players, you have to place 3rd or 4th, respectively. In playlists like the Living Dead (with 13 players), you have to place 6th.

Also, a big FUCK YES to Dodgeball in ActionSack.
