So I finished up The Fall of Reach last night and I came to the conclusion, in conjunction with Bungie lifting the veil on Halo: Reach's genre that the game would probably take pace on Reach, with the player controlling the ground team of spartans who take the second dropship down to the planet from The Pillar of Autumn. This corroborates with the silhouette image of the spartans, one with a silenced AR (as used in The Fall of Reach book) and one with a sniper rifle.

Secondly, I have only finished the first book, so if what I am saying is actually proved false in other books or Halo games, please inform me. When the Pillar of Autumn jumps into slipspace to escape Reach, the Covenant ships are circled around the planet, however it doesn't specifically mention them glassing the planet. Could their be a possibility that the spartans actually fight back against the Covenant and stop them from glassing the planet, the plot of the game perhaps?

Speaking of Halo fiction, when i went to my comics store this morning they had a copy of the new Halo Uprising hardcover graphic novel for me after I gave up on the singles and waited for this trade. Not read it yet but it sure is very pretty - I'll let you lovely folks know what I thought of it when I've finished. But just a heads-up that it's out now, so go get it if you like pretty pictures!

No, it shows what happened after in the HALO 2 Prologue.

You REALLY need to read First Strike ;)

Hello halogaf, after playing trough halo 3's campaign for the 3rd time I wanted to try to get the Annual achievement. The only problem is that I don't know anyone to do it with. So I was wondering if any of you guys want to get that achievement with me.

My GT is MeddleNL btw.

I still have to do that achievement too so I'd definitely be down to do it.

Well, to be honest, I'm not completely convinced that they're all Spartans or that this will follow anything in the book. I think by the image we can only assume a few things since this is a first-person shooter as Bungie has just confirmed.
  • There will be different player models - which definitely implies that it's class-based.
  • You will user a larger variety of weapons, including a knife.
  • It will take place on Reach during the Covenant invasion.
  • Some of the characters will be Spartans.
How closely they'll follow to the book is a bit of a mystery, but I would not expect them to rehash in any way, shape or form what happens in the book. The team you're referring to was called "red team" if I'm not mistaken and there were about two dozen of them who survived the fall when their dropship was destroyed in atmosphere. On the ground, their job was to defend the shield generator, but their fate was ultimately never discussed.

I think the thing which excites me most about Halo: Reach is the environment. Again, under the assumption that we're going to be fighting on the planet's surface, it's entirely likely that we'll be conducting the type of ground warfare we did on the levels "Halo" and "The Covenant," in areas which are heavy-laden with forests, gorges, waterfalls and lush, verdant coniferous landscapes - imagine a series of campaign environments with the texture and taste of Valhalla, which to me would be awesome.

Again, lots of speculation above so don't take it as gospel or as a prediction, but just some simple guesswork. That being said, this game has more potential than any other Halo game before it.

So if Bungie are doing Reach... what in the hell is Microsoft Game Studios doing?

And where the fuck is the Peter Jackson project?

Shit is taking way too long.
I'm pretty certain that MS will show their stuff when they're ready. It makes little sense for them to cannibalize their own products with ODST a short ways away, the Reach beta after it and then the full game later that fall.

I haven't read FoR in awhile, so I don't remember that. Details?

Can we also spoiler any book talk? I realise I'm maybe the only person here who hasn't read them, but I'm planning on picking them all up from the library in like two weeks and I'd appreciate it if I didn't get told the ending. The extent of my Halo lore knowledge comes from the games, ILB and snippets of discussion around Halo: Reach over the last few days and I would like to expand that while still having the books' stories kept intact as I'm reading them.

Reach is attacked and loses oh nooooooo

Be sure to have an extra 2-3 hours in your day. It gets annoying after the first hour and 1/2. The ghost ride is baller though, good luck.

PS: anyone wanna suggest me an avatar? The first one I get I'll use, any avatar.

Why would it take that long? I actually found halo to be one of the easiest levels in the game, you just have to hang back and let the flood come to you.

Because of Iron, the team is only as good as the weakest link. With an average team though it shouldn't take more than an hour.

One thing to remember is to destroy the auto-turrets before you go indoors, because they'll turn on you when you come back out.

Whoa. I go afk for a day, and this is what turns up?

No BR, hmm....meh, I'll deal, pistol all the way.

Oddly enough, I'm curious as to why the Rookie's name is classified. Immersion, I suppose, but even Master Chief has a name. Leaves creative freedom for the next Halo book? :P

I do have a question, tho I don't know if it can be answered...is the new visor setting time-limited, i.e. needs to recharge like Halo's flashlight? I would imagine not, but I can see some logic in not allowing it to be on all the time.

Cody mentions that vehicle boarding is out, which I expected, but am still bummed about. But in Firefight especially I can see how that would tip the scales too much, especially in Firefight. Jacking those two Wraiths would mean good players could take down all the following Phantoms.

What he said about ODST's "feel" though has me pretty excited. Halo 3's general feel is much more solid and enjoyable than Halo 2; I thought it was pretty much perfect.

I'm a little worried that ODSTs aren't going to be as down-to-earth as I originally thought. in one of the demos, an ODST in Firefight picks up a turret and walk around with it, faster than the Chief can. This doesn't make much sense to me. These guys don't have the augmented armour and everything. They're military. Elite military, sure, but still just normal dudes.

Suggestion: actually answer people's questions if you're going to reply to them. You did the same thing to Wollan in the ODST thread, telling him to go back and read the OP. How about answering a question if you're going to reply? There's lots of info out there, it's easy to miss stuff. No reason to strut your stuff and be condescending to others. The new games are bringing back lots of people who play Halo but aren't as hardcore as the set of us still posting in here, and acting like that is just a turn off for people wanting to be part of a community and get information about a game. Try being helpful, not a jerk.

To answer the question, it was buried in the weekly update:

Q. My cousin told me that Halo: Reach is a squad-based tactical MMO featuring all kinds of ridiculous stuff that I shouldn't believe. Is he a liar?

A. Halo: Reach will be a First Person Shooter. You will shoot stuff from a first person perspective. It will be awesome.

Sheesh, someone has had a bad day.
Twice people have made sincere enquiries and you've snapped at them.
I'm sick. Throat hurts, headache, feeling dizzy, I'm congested... My throat was really hurting me yesterday, and I should've stayed home, but noooo, I had to go take my physics final: that probably made it a lot worse. I probably got this from my dog waking me up so many times during Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday night of this past week because of the medicine he's taking (something was wrong with his neck about a week ago, and he was in a lot of pain, I had to take him to the vet); he needs two full weeks of cage rest. I've been sleeping most of the day and the only reason I'm on the computer now is because I got up to get something to eat and drink. But you're right, I don't know what I was thinking.

Fake edit: sorry to ramble

I just came upon on interesting thread in the Bungie.net Optimatch forums. Jacen Solo has been recording playlist population figures since yesterday afternoon and some of the figures surprised me. Namely, the Rumble Pit and Social Team DLC figures. For anyone who is interested, here is the link below.

not that surprising
ffa is awful and not the way halo should be played (imo)

and people love exp. if you made actionsack regular exp i imagine it would get a considerable boost

But LW has a healthy population according to these figures. And hey, I love FFA. It works great in Halo. >:)

i know people love ffa . i just cant stand it ;)

also even though the low pop in action sack is not that surprising to me it is still kinda depressing. needs moar custom maps but the correct size for the amount of people. (lol ninja assault on utah mambo)

For me, FFA is such a tough thing to get right. Everything has to be perfect. There's no FFA in Halo 3 that I enjoy all that much. For me, FFA doesn't get better than MLG FFA on Midship. Sooo good. The latest iteration was unlimited kills, most kills after 15 minutes wins. 8 people, so good. I hope it will play just as good on Heretic.

As long as you're talking about FFA Slayer, then yes I agree with you. King and Oddball are absolutely terrible as they're almost solely based on luck and spawns.

I feel that the current implementation of FFA in Matchmaking is a little weak. Some players have an advantage right off the bat because they spawn next to a power-up or nearby one. Certain situations repeat themselves because of that.

Here's a solid example: On Guardian, if you spawn at the 'elbow' you should never go up to the Overshield because another player spawns just around the corner of that spot. This player will almost always grab the OS first guaranteeing them enough shield (and don't forget about the 2 seconds of invulnerability) to outgun you and kill you.

The simple thing that MLG does with the Overshield on Construct is brilliant. The OS spawns three minutes into the match giving no one an immediate advantage. Rumble Pit and Lone Wolves matches could really benefit from a few little changes like that. There's no reason for a Ghost to still reside on Snowbound; Boundless has a Mongoose instead which doesn't detract from the infantry combat or interfere with it. And then there's that heinous Sandbox variant, Cubed. A map that small and simple belongs in an Action Sackesque playlist; not in Rumble Pit where it currently resides.

I could go on and on but I'm sure you fellows get the idea.

Edit: Oh God, don't get me started on objective gametypes in FFA playlists. Playing a FFA Oddball or King match is as much fun as hammering a nail through my dick (read: not very fun).

You definitely can't judge Action Sack on the population just yet. Theres going to be a bunch of people who try it and say no this isn't for me then eventually it'll find itself at some steady population of people who do like it and thats a much better number to look at.

Its like Grifball sure the first time it was up it had like 100,000 people in it I believe, but now I think it hovers around 20k?

Map list from last week. I'll try to get on in about an hour if people are still playing.
