And as the Reach logo, demonstrates, it can go both ways. Seriously, it looks like a poor fan-made one. I mean it's not a big deal in any respect, but I can't see anything redeeming about it besides its "newness." It doesn't even feel Halo-y.

And don't get me wrong, I don't discriminate between san-serif and serif. I'm an equal opportunities type of guy.

Although I really enjoyed the demo. I walked away from it feeling a little odd; not as amped about ODST as I thought I'd be. Now that I've thought about it I realize that the demo just missed most of what I find interesting about ODST:

The hub world - the demo demonstrated none of the sandbox elements ODST proposes. That old Halo 2 seemed more open world. I know the ODST demo was short and doesn't represent how the final game will be structured but it doesn't change the fact that the segments shown didn't do much more me.

More fragile - the demo showed that you now take fall damage and your health doesn't recharge unless you pick up health packs. But other than that it didn't really show how the game would play differently because you're more fragile. They talked about how they have a silenced pistol and smg along with a new visual mode but didn't really go into details on how that would affect the gameplay.

Co-op - This is how I envision me playing ODST: three buds and I roaming around the hub world doing whatever we wanted. Sneaking up on enemy outposts to coordinate a strategic attack to make up for our lack of brute strength. The demo obviously had none of this.

The only other thing I really anticipated seeing from the ODST demo was an awesome atmosphere. Luckily, the demo touched me in the right spots in this regard. Love the darkness. The bridge scene didn't look particularly amazing to me with its scale or atmosphere but I don't think I was able to see enough. I'm not even that interested in the whole "flashback" portions of the game anyways, I just want mah hub.

If I were to make the demo, it would've been 4 people playing co-op during some indiscriminate progress in the game. They'd be roaming around in a warthog, a ghost, and of course a chopper. They'd see an enemy stronghold, decide to assault (whether an official objective or maybe a sidequest to collect stuff throughout the hub), and set up. They'd use the visuals to do things previously hard or impossible and the stealth weapons to take out some stragglers before making their move. They end the battle by taking down out the brute chieftain guarding the objective.

Eazy is right. The Reach logo looks like shit.

I kind of agree with you there. He only had about four minutes to show it. I don't think there was really enough time to show as much as they wanted to: the opening cinematic, a bit of the hub world, some combat, finding a clue, a bit of the flashback mission. And on top of it all, take a couple minutes to announce an entirely (enigmatic) new game. A longer focus on one aspect - show how the Covenant patrols work at night in the open hub world - would have been more impactful.

I'm more excited by the possibilities implied in what was demoed rather than the demo itself, if that makes sense.

So I'm sitting here staring at that turret on the right hand side, and thinking how neat it would be to be able to put it in a different spot. Ya know what I mean?

Edit: fuck, I meant to reply not edit! :lol

I thought that was obvious :lol

Mention it in my last post as well:

I love how he calls it CoD-like recharge system when halo did it before...

Good FFA customs earlier tonight, folks. Vhfive, you should work on your BR a little bit. I out-BR'd you a couple of times when I was one shot and you had full health. You should try to stop being such a bk.

OJGOKSG HALO1 PISTOL IS BACK????

I AM CRYING>> I LOVE YOU BUNGIE I LOVE YOU YESSSSS

*edit*

wait, why does it shoot so damn fast?
Actually, it's not the Halo 1 pistol. The Halo 1 pistol was the M6D, this is a modified M6C. That said, it has without a doubt the brutality of the Halo 1 pistol except now with speed more similar to the Halo 2 variant, the M6C. In other words, it looks like you're carrying a beast weapon hybrid like something between the Halo 1 pistol and the single-firing BR55 from the E3 2003 demo.

On the demonstration/trailer:

Unfuckingbelievable. My hat is off to Bungie because they devoured even my rampant expectations. I had a long and hard day at work, bobbing in and out of chats and watching the conference, but I was thoroughly impressed. The trailer was phenomenal and the best cinematic in any Halo game as Shishka cited earlier. Looks like my speculation was off about the multiplayer mode and about Mombasa's layout in my last AJ piece, but from the little we've seen, I'm completely content with that level of error. Firefight looks amazing and the hub, as seen from a few shots, also looks amazing. Tomorrow I plan to schedule a full week off to romance this game in September.

It's the BR of all Halo pistols. I couldn't be happier.

Neither are the guys you control in CoD; it's an improved, evolved gameplay element. I'm definitely not certain I'm happy with that change.

As awesome as that opening scene was, and it was indeed fucking awesome, I'm still left a little underwhelmed.

We didn't learn much about ODST outside of the firefight mode. We didn't really learn much about how it plays, because from the brief time with it it didn't really ever differentiate itself from Halo 3. Sure we saw the first footage, but beyond the atmosphere, the really interesting stuff about ODST has yet to be shown. I think the crowd's reaction, and what seems to be a lot of the internet's, is pretty telling. Nothing really stood out. The demo shoulda been all about what makes it different from Halo CE, 2 & 3.

I don't see a problem with health packs for Marines/ODST's, or even "med kits". If we were super soldiers like Chief, I could see the issue, but here? .... no problem.

I put this up in the Halo Reach/ODST thread but I guess it wouldn't hurt to create some discussion here either.

Here's an interesting question. In the Halo Reach trailer you hear the voice of a Spartan 259. If there were only 150 Spartans originally, then would Sierra 259 be Spartan 059 from the Spartan II project? Is this game actually about the Fall of Reach? Hmm...
.

Any ideas?

I don't think the numbers correlate like that, John is 117 so by your scale he'd be Spartan -83. (he is a Spartan-II)

I think they're saving that for Reach, since it's less of an expansion - clearly and distictively separated from the trilogy.

ODST is, afterall, an extension/evolution of the best and most intriguing elements of the series - a game for the hardcore Halo fans, the ones who loved the first game and the E3 2003 trailer. Eazy, I'm going to invite you into my personal thinkspace bubble so this negative hyperbolic sentiment can't fill your mind with negativity. I mean, dude, did you see the pistol? When he fired it, I ain't gonna lie - I felt a little pregnant.

I wouldn't put too much thought into the exact number of Spartans as those figures are constantly in flux, even within the books. Maybe somewhere inside a Bungie vault there's a stable value to exactly how many Spartans were where, but there's a lot about ONI we don't know still. There could be plenty of other areas to draw Spartans from which have been undisclosed.

If they try to manage this within the context of what has been established already, there are 22+/- Spartans who survive the free fall to Reach. They are Red Team. Their story is not covered in Halo: Fall of Reach, except for the fact that Reach and its shield generator fall, as indicated by the catch phrasing for the title's release window. I would seriously doubt that Bungie will draw a ton out of the book here (they don't need to, there's a lot of empty spaces already), but I wouldn't be surprised if they refrained from stepping on any canonical toes either as hinted in the trailer which references terms only previously used during Nylund's work.

Reach is really an open book and I can't wait to see what populates its pages.

It's not that ODST doesn't have what I want. It's just that the demo showed none of it. But yeah, I feel like I'm being a negative nancy so I'll keep more of it to myself and let those enjoy what we've recieved. Can't wait to see the firefight footage; maybe that'll give us more of an idea if the ODST control/fight any differently than then spartans.

This made me smile:

Can't believe I didn't spot the "Houdini grunt" until Urk pointed it out though.

I'm sure this has been mentioned. But I just now checked out the "Field Guide" section on the ODST site. There's a LOT of very cool shit in there. And the Brute Plasma Rifle is back, baby! :lol

bruteplasma_header.jpg

BRUTE PLASMA RIFLE

Type-25 Directed Energy Rifle

Official designation: Type-25 DER
Length o/a: 66 cm (26 in.)
Weight: 5.9 kg (13 lbs)
Cartridge: unknown
Max. effective range: 50 meters (155 ft)
Muzzle velocity: 126 m/s (413 f/s)
Battery capacity: 400 shots
Rate of fire: 360~540 shots/min
Unit Replacement cost: N/A

Description: The Type-25 DER is a battery-powered directed energy weapon capable of fully automatic fire. The exact mechanism by which it functions is currently under investigation.

Observations: Up until just recently the Plasma Rifle had been the primary weapon of the Covenant’s officer core. The weapon has a power output of 100~150 Kv@2~3 dA.

It has been widely noted that the disparity in the effective combat range between Covenant short and long arms are much greater than those of the UNSC—this is also reflected in the Covenant’s combat doctrine: destroy enemy morale with harassing fire from distant or hidden snipers and intimate exposure to the alien-ness of their infantry.

In addition to the standard issue "blue-purple" DER there is also a "red" variant that has a much higher rate of fire, and thus a greater likelihood of overheating. So far this variant has only been found in the hands of the brutes, and even then, only since they have seen a return as front-line combatants.

I know I don't post here too much anymore, work has been crazy. I so wish I could brain storm and shoot the shit with you guys again, ah memories...

But a big WOW at all the cool Halo stuff. ODST is totally the Halo 2 E3 trailer with bacon and deep fried ice cream, can't wait...

Halo: Reach and ODST...here's hoping for a PAX that is full of Halo goodness. *Crosses fingers*

Oh wow, didn't hear about the brute plasma rifle returning. Not that it makes me particularly excited since I also thought it was a sorry excuse for an additional weapon. The variety is welcomed though. I hope they have a bunch of new weapons and vehicles as they don't really need to balance them as heavily as they would if there were a competitive MP component. It'd be awesome if you could unlock guns and use them in a non-scoring Firefight or campaign. Just to give this $60 game a little more value ya know ;)

I think this comment (or a similar one during a Halo: Recon interview) is part of why I expected their next game to be in a new IP:
1UP: Historically, Bungie doesn't do expansions, even stretching back to the Myth days. Was a Halo 3 expansion always part of the plan, or is Recon really a spur of the moment response to the community?

LS: It's definitely more of the latter. It's also a product of our schism from Microsoft; where now, one of our core tenets as we left Microsoft is to be a multiproject studio that's able to focus on new IP. So as we begin to focus on new IP, and we have multiple projects spin up at once, [the idea of] meeting our fan desire for more Halo 3 content, and doing it with a team of incredibly grizzled veterans at Bungie, made perfect sense to us.
I think I totally disregarded the "able to work on new IP"
(I read what I want to read)
and expected something new from them after this 4th Halo game.

But seriously, keep it out of my multiplayer :D
But think of the possibilities! BR + Rape pistol starts. Out of BR ammo? No problem, switch to your pistol for that last headshot instead of spraying your AR and hoping that your shots count.

Man, I'm so hyped for both of these games. I'm really hoping Reach is a class based game focused only on objective game types for multiplayer.

I don't care if every game they ever make is set in the Halo universe, as long as it's polished and fun to play, all that matters to me.

Well the earliest I'd imagine the game coming out would be 2011 and if it's a full featured game with its own MP (that wouldn't want to compete with Reach's) it'll probably come out 2 or 3 years after Reach so 2012 or 2013. I don't think we'll be hearing about their new IP anytime soon :\
