To be honest, I had actually thought that the video rendering piece had a chance at actually being an add on to the actual game and not a BNet feature. Select a video in your saves from the 360 and then render/export it out to a usb stick. The 360 has more than enough horsepower to do simple video encoding.
Now that would be amazing.

I would love to see something like Skate's video functionality tied into Halo. It renders it on the box and spits it out to EA's servers, viewable by anyone.

But that's too good of an idea and doesn't rape the customers of more money, so it won't work.

Also something about support for that needing to be built in immediately and differences in quality and differences in the number of users making these requests and any other number of factors BUT YOU TAKE THAT SOAPBOX AND YOU STAND ON IT, MR. INTERNET.

A well placed smoke grenade can be the difference between utter defeat and absolute victory.

Any CoD player knows this.

Oh, for sure. When you smoke rising on the horizon in CoD, you know all hell is about to break loose and it's time to get into "serious business" mode.

I'm assuming that kind of functionality - an entire new feature set - isn't something Halo 3 has the hooks to patch in. I'm sure Bungie considered it, and would go that (less expensive) route if they could.

Programming isn't the problem, obviously. Think about how one views a film in Halo 3, versus how one uploads video to YouTube. There is a very obvious, very significant difference, and it has nothing to do with programming.

Odd that I said what was the limiting factor before, and you make a post saying I'm wrong, at least indirectly. Do you really believe in your own superiority that much? Because from what I've seen in my few months of lurking here, you seem to play pretty fast and loose with the facts.

For everyone else, the test is going pretty good so far, found some good bugs, hopefully we'll be able to get you guys trying HD rendering soon with a new batch of render minutes.

I would also like a sniper rifle that can shoot through walls.

Make this happen.

Oh and I am right about disputing BeazyE's comments of what's holding Bungle back. I brought Google to the table to show what their problem was not compare their size. Obviously reading comprehension failed some of us. If video rendering was such a huge problem with them then they should spend more time with their engineers and programmers. A simple programming solution should not be holding them back.

*edit* oh and I am never wrong. remember this

Yes. Yes he does. Clearly you didn't study google enough or something.

Thanks for the update.

Cool I am kinda bummed now that I didn't pay for bungie pro after it ran out from which ever map set it came with. Legendary?

Found a good use with BuTube for me. No longer will I have to worry about me thinking that the pictures of my forge maps look horrible.

Now I can just put one of these up in Atlas if I ever get enough games to submit it.

Still ready for our Halo 2 Friday game night? I'll be hosting this one aaaaand it's going to happen at 2030 CST, that's 8:30pm for you civilians. Make sure you have all of the maps downloaded and that you are able to run them before you join the room.

We'll begin with BR starts on Lockout and go from there.

So uh..anyone?

I guess I could give Halo 2 a twirl.

No Bumper Jumper though. :(
The lack of BJ is easily made up for with the absence of hazardous textures.

So, I popped in Halo 2 on LIVE for the first time, and wow, SMG starts make ARs seem like a godsend. The BR is crazy deadly; I dunno, I kinda prefer the gimped Halo 3 one. I am a bit offput by the lack of BJ. If only controls were fully customizable =/

Holy shit.

So I was looking back at the GI article on H3: ODST. I assumed the beginning was talking about a Spartan, or just any female. Let's take a look at it again though.

"What the hell kind of armor was she wearing?" asks an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper in regards to a new female soldier who recently arrived on the ship. "I don't know," says another. "Wasn't looking at her gear."
[...]
The squad gathers their gear and dissipates. The only ODST wearing a helmet dozes in the corner. "Wake up, buttercup," Romeo shouts. "Relax, rookie." another says. "He don't mean nothin'. Besides now's one of those times it pays to be the strong silent type."

As Littlebigman on H.B.O said, Bungie always refer to the main player as "The Rookie", not he. (I haven't checked this for myself yet though)

Could the only one in ODST armor (the player) be this female they are speaking of? Is "The Rookie", the infamous Maddie from the SI's message "Where are you Maddie?"? I also find it bizarre The Rookie was called "buttercup". And something a little out there... in the scan of the ODST holding a pistol, the index finger looks slightly longer than the ring finger. What does that mean? Female confirmed.

[edit] Okay, nevermind I'm crazy. Staten refers to the rookie as a he numerous times in the GI article.

I edited my map, Access, with more additions for spawns (outside) and slightly bit more cover fire. Weapon times are basically the same. I also re-worked Territories and King of the Hill variants. I tried to simulate KotH to Beaver Creek's points, even though my map altogether isn't exact. Two on the back-sides, two on top, and I put the final one in Rocket spawn. I think Team King could be kind of fun in the map.

Speaking of Team King, what playlist had no grenade starts? Was it Team Hardcore? Something else? I played it once in High Ground, and boy, was it great.

This Maddie character is an interesting ingredient.

Considering that this is only a campaign expansion, that several of the missions are played by secondary characters, that the marketed storyline focuses on uncovering the secret behind the Covenant's invasion plans and that seemingly both the Rookie and his guide, the Supe, are mute -- how the hell are they going to effectively fit a story in there about this Maddie girl and the Rookie's need to find her, and somehow have it deliver on the emotional front, as it seems to be billed.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not doubting that it couldn't be done, I'm just shocked that they're going to attempt it in a campaign expansion. It makes me think that some of the storytelling may be passive like the terminals, which, if done right could be plenty awesome.

Ugh, everytime you talk about ODST, I want to go straight to AJ.com and re-read the trailer analysis which shoots my hype to extraordinary levels. :(

I guess I forgot to add in my last post...

Just wanted to mention 1) I'm glad to see community maps like Utah Mambo in matchmaking (ran into it in the Mythic playlist) and 2) I say "like" Utah Mambo, because it is not a good map.

The actual forge work on it is incredible. The guy made some interesting structures and the way he's pushed them into the sand and out into the dunes makes the map have a much more organic feel to it than just a court with dunes around it.

But it's not fun to play on. At least, the one-sided gametypes are not fun, largely because the actual base design is terrible. Conceptually, it's sound. I like the idea of several distinct structures for an attacking team to take control of and slowly advance on the base. But the base itself is convoluted, has too few entry points and huge portions of it go unused.

Case in point: the two tunnels that wrap around the bottom area. They end in a dead end, with a slit wall there. Now, I can see them being useful if they wrapped around the flag, or the arming zone. But they don't. They're just two dead ends looking into a part of the base there is no reason to ever traverse. Dead ends that contain no goodies don't make any sense, especially in the base. If they were unblocked at the end, they would actually be useful.

And then there's how you get into the base in the first place. Basically, walk (or drive) a long time up the dunes and around the base. From down below, there's no direct route up to the top. Up above, there's a huge ramp going into the dune that serves no purpose. I'd say 50-60% of the base goes entirely unused. It was fun arming the bomb and then watching the other team run around trying to figure out how to get up to the arming zone.

I'm probably looking a gift horse in the mouth by ripping on a community map after wanting to see them in matchmaking. My forge skills are nowhere near the guy that made this, and I admire anyone trying asymmetric maps. I'm genuinely glad to see them showing up, and to see the promise of Sandbox start to be realized. But boy, there's some epic forging yet bad design on Utah Mambo.

Eh, I doubt the story will be any good. Hopefully they use this unique hub setting and different characters to set up really memorable set pieces. Then again I've always been in the crowd that's appreciated a rediculusly awesome co-op moment far more than complicated timeline of story cannon.

It just seems to me that a blown up, expansive city is the perfect venue where the environment does all the storytelling and minimizes the reliance on previous (, IMO weak,) methods of storytelling. I haven't played STALKER yet (downloaded, PC sucks though) but it's I imagine that game does (or could do). You're just a man in a dangerous environment trying to survive and get shit done.

The few times I have played the map haven't been completely positive either but I think it's too early to write off the map. It's pretty complicated (assymetrical maps are inherently more complex) and I can imagine there are a ton of different ways to approach the map. Once I, and most people I play with/against on the map learn it I'll have much more confidence in dismissing it.

Dude, it's difficult not to be hyped about ODST no matter what you read. The pieces we have up on AJ pretty much just address the trailer and some of the events which frame 10/20/2552. There's a metric ton of other stuff we haven't even skimmed the surface about this title yet.

I just spent the last half an hour foraging six months worth of updates for a piece I'm working on now. I haven't done that sort of stuff since the development of Halo 3, we're talking circa 2006 - the Mister Chief era.

Hm, in terms of ODST, do you think part of New Mombasa's open world/hub gameplay is the ability to free roam the city, without doing ANY story related missions, and just walk around the entire city and run into random Brutes who are just strolling a long, say, a back alley?

Think of it like Fallout 3 where if you're not doing any story related missions (whether it's main or side-quests) and you go to, say, an abandon house and end up running into some enemies who are in the house, you'll be able to fight them no problem.

I would really like it if I could free-roam New Mombasa (not doing ANYTHING story related), cross a street into a back alley and have a couple Brutes just chillin' in the back alley with me having the ability to fight them whenever, however.

Absolutely. That's the definition of the hub world as far as I can tell, although I'm pretty sure its scale and agility (in terms of loading) will be different than Fallout 3. The enemies there will likely respawn (ie. new enemies are loaded into the environment constantly) and run on patrol cycles, as Bungie has mentioned prior. For example, Phantoms and Brute packs will comb the streets, there might be road blocks, enemy encampments and makeshift depots, things like this.

I'm guessing that there will be some element of story still in operation within the hub world, in part because of the Superintendent and in part because I can't see the main narrative catching the needed traction if it just occupied the spoke missions. That said, I fully expect the hub environment to allow the type of open-ended gameplay you're describing.

The NPD thread reveals that Halo 3 only allowed Halo Wars to outsell it for a single month. The sales dropped like a rock.

Haven't been to Gamestop in ages, when do you reckon I'll be able to get a used copy on the cheap?

Like I said, the rest of the map is pretty solid. The slayer games we played in customs, that focused on everything but the base - went great. But regardless of how you get through the map, the base really restricts how it is accessed and has many superfluous and generally unused areas.

But I'm really just bitching because it's late and over the past month I've started three asymmetric maps and I can't finish them.

This is the only thing that worries me. If I'm free roaming and doing what I described what I wanted to do above, I don't want something pushing me forward (which is why I'm glad Bungie decided to let the other drop pods/weapons laying around the city be the sort of "start next mission" sequence once I, by my own will, arrive to said items). That's not to say I don't want to do the story missions, because I do really badly, but during my down time when I just want to dick around New Mombasa from time to time, I don't want it implemented into anything else than me screwing around the city aimlessly.

Hopefully ODST isn't a November release. I want it asap.

still 55 to my knowledge.

Voc: Stop hyping me up for this game!!!! >< The wait is so damn long! ...Actually not really. At the most it's 7 months. More like 6 because we're already halfway through May. 6 month wait isn't bad. Right? D:

...

*hype* ><

Also as of today I'm not legally old enough to buy a lottery ticket! :D ..or do you have to be 21? :|

Maddie isn't necessary someone that the Rookie is looking for. She's someone the Superintendent is looking for - possibly under his own steam, possibly because he's helping the Rookie. Possibly she is the Rookie. I'm not saying much new there, though.

I've already given my thoughts on why she won't be called Maddie any more, though.

Cause that would be so awesome for her to in some way make an appearance in the game :D

EDIT: It would make sense though that she would go back to active duty with the Covenant/Flood on earth during the events of Halo 3. I mean if she does have a family on Earth would she not do what is needed to protect them?

Hey Shishka, can we get a gametype in the Mythic Brawl hopper that consists of Spartan Lasers only? And then set the weighting to 80%? I would really like that "Two for One" achievement. Its almost been two years. :)
