So the truth comes out. You are making the limit edition "bling" Helmet that comes with the pre-order of ODST from gamestop.

Here you go Dax, red all over because you didn't specify

For more dedicated render users, we plan to offer a pay-as-you-go model where you can buy "point packs".

I was excited for it, til I read this! Looks like I'm not going to bother!
WTF Bungle..... I'm sure it's good o'l M$ idea! Let me guess 100MSP for (ONE) Bungie point!

So, it is a little confusing. So, starting whenever it goes out of beta, the way we intend for it to work is as follows.

1) Subscribe to bungie pro.
2) Every M units of time (probably once a month), you get X "render minutes" (referred to as points in the beta, might change). These minutes/points accumulate like rollover cell phone minutes. X is undetermined at the present time, but could easily be as few as 1 or 2.
3) Each minute of film, rounded up, costs 1 minute in SD and 5 minutes in HD. This cost could change, but that's what it is right now... HD, in particular, is brutal in terms of computational costs.

Note: All numbers/intentions/assumptions/names of things subject to drastic change without notice. This feature is very experimental at the scale of users we're talking about.

It works like this to throttle the requests against our render farm, otherwise you'd crush us. In addition, we hope to offer some way of purchasing addition render minutes for those who want to bypass their "turn in line". This system is primarily meant for small, quick clips, those of you making montages and machinima should be using capture cards. We're hoping to be able to set the amount of monthly minutes that you get to something good, but we're trying to set your expectation that it could easily be 1 or 2. There are simply too many unknowns at this time.

The beta selection was us saying "we need X amount of people, how do we select them." Turns out X is roughly equal to the number of accounts who have ever paid us money for Bungie Pro, so they get first crack at playing with it.

To answer EasyB's question, the rendering points are spent for rendering, not for viewing. Once you create the rendered film, anybody can see it who is also a Beta user. Eventually, it would be nice to allow all users to see rendered films even if they aren't pro subscribers, but that is another thing we can't really promise at this time. But anyway, as render points are meant as a throttle to keep the farm from getting overwhelmed, you don't get them back after you grab the finished film off of bnet.

Nice to see the rendering program starting. Little confused about the points thing though.

Is there any way I can render the video, save it, then delete it from the Bnet servers and get my points back? Or even just instantly download it without bothering to keep it on the Bnet servers or use points? I just have a bunch of really short clips I want to save to my computer, make a rockin montage, and put it on youtube.

Makes sense considering that the theoretical demand could crush B.net easily. Before, 'buTube' was a great dream and it sucks to see the reality of the situation. I should have expected that the rendering service wasn't going to be available without some limitations. Regardless, its a nice feature to have even if its a little limited.

That Bungie is in a difficult position. They have to be fair to the people who paid for the DLC and for those who haven't paid for the DLC.
That's fine and dandy, but you mentioned Microsoft first and foremost, by highlighting they put Bungie "in this position." Once the DLC is released through Marketplace, they are out of the equation. They don't factor in what goes into requirements and what does not.

The render video thing seems rather cool, but I rather watch folk's videos through Youtube or something on my 360. Beats paying for it.

Bandwidth and storage are definitely concerns for our web team, but the real issue here is scale. Remember when I was rendering clips for some of you bastards? I could handle a small number of requests at any one given time, but when I'd get twenty or more queued up, it became too time and resource intensive and the wait would go from a few hours turnaround time to a few days.

While the contraption is a bit more complex than my primitive brain, a Blackmagic Intensity Pro, and a fairly modern PC with a measly terabyte of striped disc space, the same issue bears itself out. Too many simultaneous requests (relatively speaking) result in extended wait times. It's not much of a problem when it's just one dude rendering clips in his living room (in his underwear) with no promise or expectation. It's a different story when you have to think about it in terms of thousands of simultaneous requests from folks who expect near instant gratification.

"Your rendered video will be available: December 15th, 2020."

And for people incredulous over how "greedy" Bungie is, I'd point out that not a single player has paid for one second of rendering time during the beta. Nor will they. Part of the idea here is to figure out how many free minutes we can sustain without creating a small atomic explosion in the studio and breaking the service for everyone. Which is why you can't buy additional minutes or gain access by purchasing Bungie Pro during the beta.

This reminds me. When Gamevee was still up, how did they do their capturing? Wait times were bearable, considering the service was free. Quality wasn't great, but it was decent.

I assume they did it manually (that's what she said).

I think it was automated, since a lot of videos would end and it would keep recording for another like thirty seconds. It was odd, but it made it seem as though there was no one watching it.

Bungie should post the stats for how many users sign up(actually pay) for Bungie Pro for the next couple weeks... Lets see how many people can't read the entire news post about the Beta. You know some 8 year old kid was screaming for daddies credit card when he started reading the news about the beta, but failed to read and comprehend the entire thing.

FYI Squad Battle Rocks... got up to 30 in it tonight :D

this all makes sense i guess its the 1 or 2 a month thats got me bummed. like i said i'm a bungie pro member and will continue to be (i like making maps and taking pictures) so i guess i'm getting something for free so i shouldn't complain
i think 4 bungle points a month is the sweet spot for me

So it's not so much an issue with storage and bandwidth but with the rendering. That's a shame, I could think of a million ways around the previous issues but there's nothing to be done about rendering limitations. Oh well. I hope you guys keep the possibility of rendering to PC in mind on you future projects.

Thanks for the reply.

Nice to see the render beta go live. I was really hoping to get into it - I'm perpetually bumping into my custom content limit since I've been saving clips ever since it was first mentioned - but I do understand why a notice of the selection method couldn't be given in advance. I'm just glad get a meaty update, and know when it's (hopefully) launching.

Found this while looking around my Recon WIP folder, something I tried in Mental Ray during modeling.

Errors have since been fixed, but its nice to see how a nice metal shader brings out the edges.

Thanks for this. I would also have to agree with Vhfive: I think 4 "points" (3 is good too) a month would be best.

Limitations? I thought thats why we were going to pay the Bungie Pro fee? And how do I purchase it I got it free for the Mythic but apparently that's not good enough. Douchebags, all of them.

I guess I'll just buy a Blackmagic Intensity.

Only people who have actually purchased Bpro get access to the beta or somesuch. Doesn't count if you got Legendary/Mythic

I used up both my points yesterday, and when I logged into Bnet today, I had two more points available. Was this a glitch or was it intentional?

Don't think it was a glitch. I also had 2 points added to my account and I haven't even rendered anything yet; looks intentional.

Edit: Wu uploaded this a while back for the lulz, but since it's the only clip I have right now in my Fileshare, I figured I'd go ahead and upload the no-scope I got on Ram during Custom Night a few weeks back: http://www.bungie.net/Online/Halo3UserContentDetails.aspx?h3fileid=75816303.

No I'm aware I read that in the BWU. But I'd like to PURCHASE it now so I can try the beta butube out. I can't seem to though because I've gotten it for Mythic DLC download.

I wouldn't say "showered" on you, but you'll occassionally see more render minutes magically appear in your bank during the beta, yes.

During the beta it's my understanding that you'll just get points showered on you so you can test it as much as you can.

Arnie said:
Urk if my fileshare has been banned can I still render some of my clips through butube?

Not sure. Try it. If you're in the beta population, you'll have minutes to spend. You could also try rendering another player's clips. Something tells me it might not work though.

Achronos could probably give you some more insight.

In the article it states:

We're ready to enter the public Beta phase of this project, which is open to all paid Bungie Pro subscribers *up through yesterday morning*. We need to have a limited-size audience for the beta, so if you're reading this now and haven't previously subscribed, doing so now won't get you access to the beta, sorry.

Well cmon Bungie get me in the beta! Fuckin eh.

Tashi0106 said:
You gotta be in the beta

Ok cause I was just wondering if I wasn't seeing something. I mean it makes sense to maybe limit the rendering but the viewing of files...seems like anyone should be able to do that.
