It's one thing to launch a new game, with a new engine, with new mechanics and have a few duds in the map selection. It's another thing to release such an embarrassingly horrendous map after the game's been out for over a year. Orbital just reeks of someone hunched over their computer in some dark corner dumping thousands of dollars into a neat idea they had and once they finally reveal it to the rest of the team it's too far gone to go back. Threw some prettiness into the map (the map is aesthetically gorgeous) and shipped it. I refuse to believe the majority of Bungie employees think it's a good map.
Two things.

Thing one: that is your opinion of Orbital. I don't have a sense for how the community breaks down, but I've read a lot of praise for the map and I don't see it getting vetoed when I play. So bear in mind that while you find it deeply flawed, opinions vary. Then again, Heavies is deeply flawed and is also not vetoed. So hmmm.

Thing two: the maps have been done for a loooooong time. The team finished them last summer. They've moved on. Granted this is a lesser point, but still. It's not like they've been tinkering for a year and half and this is what they made.

so i just ran into some people on mythic who knew me as that guy who created sanctuary, kinda strange. i also got 8 flag carrier kills against them

We were in a post count war? Since when? That kid must not come here much because this thread is always active. Especially before, during, and after a map pack release (Mythic Map Pack). :lol Silly fanboys.

God, some of the chatter from the Halo community is ridiculous. Rarely do I go into a game such as Legendary Brawl without being in party chat as it doesn't require teamwork however I did do it just once and here are some of the interesting points I gleamed from the match:

- Everyone who made Halo 1 and 2 left Bungie before 3 so that is why 3 sucks because all previous Bungie staff left.

- Halo 2 was so much better than Halo 3 because if a player was good nobody could kill him. In halo 3 there is more chance of a bad player killing a good player.

- AND I QUOTE, "Halo 3 is shit because it is too well balanced".

From this I conclude players feel that in Halo 2 they were able to rack up endless wins through exploitation of balance issues Bungie didn't detect. In Halo 3, as most weapons are so well balanced, players can be competent with them (except AR, as it fires English pennies) in most situations.

Definitely the best part of the entire post.

Ghal has it right. Again, just because you don't like it, doesn't mean Bungie doesn't know how their own game works.

They are mostly right. In a balanced game a better player beats a worse player. In Halo 3 bad players can play at a more equal level due to the ease of gameplay. Its called learning curves and advancement of skills. Halo 3 doesn't have as much of that as Halo 2 did. FACT.

Ok, so I haven't played Orbital yet so I can't speak to its quality but, I do know that some maps take time to grow on you. There are some maps that I just hated when I first played them but have grown to really like. Example: Amplified. It also happens in reverse. Example: Guardian.

I say, give it time.

Dude, surely you remember the great race for hits that the Killzone 2 hype thread was challenging us to. Or that guy who came in and asked whether this was the original thread. And the aforementioned post......

Lol, some part of me doesn't even believe that's an actual post.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist by any means, but its blatantly obvious that the useless chatter going on in that thread is simply to inflate its view and post numbers because this thread is ramping up quickly and will pass it in a few months at the rate we're going.

BLATANTLY obvious. :P

Anywho....I don't particularly mind Orbital, though I haven't really seen the Sniper ever get much action, it seems that Rocket side is used a lot more frequently by both teams, and. That might contribute to it feeling stale for some people, in addition to the other things people have mentioned like map fatigue, etc.

For someone who argues so vehemently in favour of ARs over BRs, this map over that map, Babylon 5/DS9 over Firefly, First Contact over KAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHNN!! this is a little odd coming from you. Just don't jump down someones throat when they say something you disagree with. Jump down their throat when they tell you you're wrong.

Dude I also hated Guardian and I am pretty sure it growing on me directly corresponded with its increased weighting of BR starts lol.

I in fack can't bungle just tell us, urk?? Halo Wars is out, there on the marketplace. What's the deal??

Bungie can't tell you (outright) because of reasons. However, Urk apparently did get a green light to put this whole thing to rest in the update next Friday.

I'm not one to make sweeping generalizations about the maps and only do so once I feel wholeheartedly confident in my conclusion. I too hated Guardian and while that may've been mostly due to AR starts I like to this I just learned the map more and something just clicked. The problem with Orbital is that it's so straight forward there is little to nothing to learn about the map. Once you've played one match on it you've played them all. It follows none of the conventions that makes other great Halo maps great Halo maps.

But don't take my word for it, I'm almost certain you'll feel the same way.

I argue vehemently over B5/DS9 against Firefly and First Contact against Khan? Didn't know that.
Just don't jump down someones throat when they say something you disagree with. Jump down their throat when they tell you you're wrong.
I'm not arguing what his opinion of the map (he's entitled to it), I'm arguing what he said around that. This isn't the same thing. For one, if I don't like a new map or some gametype or anything, I don't post wondering whether or not Bungie knows their own game, and go as far as to say that I refuse to believe the majority of people in Bungie like X map. Orbital had plenty of time in the oven, and even have enough time to be put back in to heat it up more. I don't comment on the development processes of the maps, wondering how X map got into the game, because I don't have a clue as to what goes on in those processes. I don't have any idea of the development behind most of the Halo 3 maps, and only have a vague idea on the rest. Nor does Eazy.

quick question, how much budget does default sandbox take up? I'm trying to figure out how much budget I have left to work with for ascension

and what is the object limit again (total limit and the limit if all items are deleted from sandbox)

The better idea would be to stop watching all sci-fi trash and watch The Wire instead.
The Wire is an amazing show. There should be a law which requires every human being to watch all five seasons.

In regards to all of this Orbital talk: I will admit that at first I HATED the map, but it has grown on me. I actually rather enjoy objective gametypes on this map. Neutral bomb and 2 flag CTF are lots of fun. Slayer on the other hand....not so much. Especially if it's AR starts. When it is slayer with AR starts (and even with BR starts) people will just sit in corners and camp until someone comes along. I completely despise this type of gameplay. Some of you may enjoy it, but I think it ruins Halo's multiplayer. So I can see where your complaints come from Eazy, but I would not go as far as calling it an "abortion" of a map. That's quite harsh. I am not sure where I would rank Orbital with the other Halo 3 maps, but I am quite sure I would veto a few other maps in hopes for an Orbital objective gametype.

If you delete everthing there by default you should end up with around $1.5k, load up default sandbox, check the remaining budget and take the difference to find your answer.

As far as the object limit, it's 640 but I don't know how much objects there are by default.

Map looks great so far, keep it up.

Edit: If all that is only running you $300 (1/5 of the budget) than you should be pretty good if I had to guess.

Not many changes to the map list but it's been quite a few pages since I've posted it so I'll give it a little bump. There seems to be a lot of work in progress though so keep your eyes peeled.

Dude, I would pay GOOD MONEY for Bungie to recall every last Halo 3 disc and replace them with new Halo 3 discs, but without ARs, just to stop Cocop from spouting these insanities during almost every single non-BR start match:
  • Oh crap, Bungie just spawned me with an AR. These jokers are gonna pay now.
  • He just killed all of those people...did you see his weapon? Probably an AR.
  • Wow, I found an AR guys, everyone get behind me... flying V-formation.
  • See that guy on the other team, their point leader. Look at his weapon of destruction. AR.

has anyone figured out a way to get moving kill balls in a map?

i played around in forge for a while with the huge ramps (set up like a half-pipe), some man cannons, and a kill ball, but the best i could get was the kill ball to roll back and forth 2 or 3 times before slowing down and settling at the bottom. i tried varied distances between the ramps and using additional man cannons, but couldnt get on-going motion. any suggestions?

i think it would be a pretty bad ass addition to original maps to have sections of moving kill balls, even if they have to be rigged in a manner such as stated above. i can imagine a high risk high reward path for mongoose/hogs to pass through a path of several such kill balls.

There is literally no better feeling in the world than BRing Cocop as springs out from some corner and charges AR blazing.
Your feeling is probably very similar to the one David had when he one-shotted Goliath. Beating the odds is always nice.

This was even funnier as a video clip, but it cracked me up while I was playing yesterday. Guy sits on a turret when we go to steal his team's flag...

69217848-Medium.jpg

Guy stays on the turret as we drive it home. He wasn't even shooting at anything, just swiveling back and forth, back and forth. He then detached the turret, walked all the way to our base, and got sniped in the head.

But he kept you from going down the center of the map right?

Strategery.

Nicely done. I like how after you got the Running Riot, you still charged out into the fray. I would've pussied out and tried to hide for the rest of the match.
That Perfection achievement might be the death of me. The closest I've gotten was going 13-0 on Sandbox before the match ended. =(

Yesssss, fuck professors tryin to pile on projects/midterms/homeworks/labs/quizes all in a four day span. Fuck TA's that are graduate students but can't speak a sentence of coherent English. It's spring break bitches and I'm off to cancun jk I can't afford it so I'll be playing halo and hoping assembly comes up instead of orbital/killbox

That was actually a really fun game to watch. Congrats. Sometimes watching a good game is just as fun, if not better then playing (I'm on spring break and left my box at skoool). I also never realized there are maulers on the middle ledges. The more you know...

Maybe it baffles you because you aren't the only person who plays the game and don't realize this based on what you just said?

It's not that Bungie doesn't know what works and what doesn't by now, it's the fact that you don't like the map. I like it, Ghal likes it, and I'm sure there are other people here who like it. Just because you don't like a map doesn't mean Bungie doesn't know their own game.
Agree partially, but putting Multi-Flag on Ghost Team and other gaffes are a problem. Maybe you don't see them as one, but they certainly aren't favorable by any means. A map like Last Resort, for instance, should be focused primarily as a 1-CTF/1 Bomb map. You see non-BR start Slayer and Territories the same amount, if not more.

As for Orbital, lot of people will like it. Then there's going to be a lot who do not. Just because Bungie built it and thinks it will become a great map doesn't mean that's going to happen. It can be a good map by making adjustments and using it to its strengths.

I'd like to know, as well. Currently working on my inspired BC map, and it would be welcoming to know how much money I need to spare or what to watch out for.
