While live is down here is some interesting stuff to read on the internets-

First here is a list of some Bungie speakers at GDC09. L.M. Smith looks to be talking.
https://www.cmpevents.com/GD09/a.asp

Second, here is an interesting Vidoc that came with the multiplayer map pack for Halo 2. Could be interesting to some forging halo 2 remakes. Gives an interesting insight into the development for the DLC H2 Maps.

Part 3http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3UeWh3nAYE&feature=related

Enjoy.

I really miss Three Plots. The give and take, securing and losing territories, was so awesome.

Spent three hours iterating one corner of my map tonight. Finally solved the problems, and got something working. Will hopefully finish the other three (symmetrical) corners tomorrow. :lol

That's what made maps like Turf so fundamental. Each of those maps had an unique game variant that made them work so well. For example, Terminal with 1 Bomb and 1-CTF (as for Relic), Turf (3-Plots and, one of my other favorites there, Team Slayer Pro), and Sanctuary (Multi-CTF). It feels like the maps were built specifically for that type of game, and it was used that way accordingly in MM.

Three Plots -- Lockout

Never Forget

How'd you go about that?
It was at the end of the game and we were up by 23 or so. The other team had 6 players and 1 wasn't playing. I was at there base with the ghost and saw the guy not playing spawn by the hogs. I was going around the map like mad, mainly just fooling around. Someone almost killed me with a turret, because I missed him. It was somewhat cheaply gotten, 3 of the 5 kills were from the guy not playing, but I wasn't really going for it!
Achievements in this game, are seriously frustrating, the perfection will be the end of me! 3000 games and not one! I know there worthless in the long run, but I really only care about 3's, I want all 1750.

closest i got was 4 in a ghost, rounded the rockets guy and sped through him but somehow it only took his shield. then he killed me. then i was upset.

But What I Really Want to Do is Make Games
Writing about videogames is a great job; but making videogames? According to these five panelists, that's even better. This panel will focus on crossovers, a.k.a. the men and women who began their careers as writers, but who somehow, some way transitioned that experience into roles on the game development side. Food writers don't usually become chefs. Film critics don't typically make films. But in the still relatively young field of gaming, game journos apparently can become game makers.

Not too sure about Sandbox's default layout. It felt a little too open, but I don't know if that's because I didn't know the map too well at first and was standing in dumb places, because I was able to run the flag from base to base without any trouble at all.

The SWAT arena in the crypt, though, is awesome.

I am the complete opposite ... I normally do well on the default layout ... BR starts preferred. It's not that I don't do well on SWAT on Tundra ... I just don't like it.

Yeah, I kept finding this to be a problem. Sandbox's default is just really too open especially with the bases in line with one another. They should have just gotten rid of the Warthog and added a couple more areas of cover.

I hope we get some video and/or transcripts of some of these things.
Yeah, that would be great to see some video, or maybe even some slides on the publications page on Bnet.

I really would like to see Corrinne Yu's presentation, but I feel I wouldn't understand much of it. My one semester of intro to java probably wouldn't help me too much.

She does work with the Halo team at MS so it could be cool to see where shes taking the next halo engine.

Maybe it's just because I don't play SWAT that often and I'm really liking the mechanic and not the map, but I had tremendous fun sitting on the base ledge in Tundra and dodging in and out.

Man, all this talk makes me want to jump back in. Is anyone free to play in half an hour or so? Is there a HaloGAF metatag that I should add?

Awesome, added both tags. I'm going to grab a shower and then I'll be on straight after with a friend. Anyone feel free to join me, just say where you're from when you do :P

Gamertag's Willeth. I think it might be time for a friend clearout if people are going to start adding me, I only have like eight spaces left :P

I agree. This year has been an interesting one for Halo. We have the final six maps of Halo 3, the first non-FPS/non-Bungie game in Halo Wars, the first campaign expansion/final say on the trilogy in Halo 3: ODST and I'd be surprised if we didn't get anything at all about Bungie's next title (Halo or not) and an announcement on some of what the Halo studio has been working on over the past year.

Also, rummaged around a few of the GAF remakes last night, in particular: Sanctum, Turf and Mage. I was pretty impressed with the efforts and I'm interested in playing a few matches on them, but I was wondering if anyone had attempted some of these maps on the ground level. The crypt seems like a great place for something like the Mage, it looks pretty damn close to what I had expected, but maps like Sanctuary or Turf might function better from a visible/lighting perspective on the ground level -- even something like Ivory Tower would fall into that category, just based on how well lit the map was.

BTW, my 2 friends and I had a blast playing on Sandstorm, which I believe is Ghal's map. It is SO perfect for FFA Slayer :) We also played on Abbadon, and I have no idea who's map it is, but it is also perfect for FFA Slayer. Really good maps, guys :)

Ooh, speaking of custom maps, we played an FFA with three people on Bomb3rman, and it worked quite well except that you can get on top of the pillars with a well-placed jump though the man cannons. Kinda sucks.

Haha, that's mine. Glad you dug it. I designed it for two-sided gametypes like Team Slayer, CTF and Assault, but it's good to see that it wasn't horrible with FFA. :-)

this!!!!!!!!!

its alot better than territories imo. id like to see land grab on guardian

and 1flag guardian too!!! please

and once a perfect wizard/warlock is made on sandbox, we need 4-way multiflag in multiteam, and in pretty much every playlist ever

I agree that I believe more people should be attempting remakes on the main floor. The lighting (or lack thereof) in the Crypt does not give some of these maps the "feel" that they originally had.

Orbital really is a kind of spiritual successor to Longest/Elongation. I'd forgotten until watching the vidoc posted earlier (it has been a while since I watched it), but the skybox/setting is even similar to Elongation - complete with a view out the window to Earth and lots of cargo crates cluttering the center hallway (they're just not moving).

It's not a remake, but that's partly the reason I made Sandstorm on the basin level: everyone was making stuff in the sky bubble or crypt, and visually I like the basin setting more. I like maps that take advantage of the hills surrounding the center field.

:D It worked pretty awesome with 1v1v1. Choppers frakking rock :D

So why hasn't bungie fixed the spartan/elite head hit boxes yet?

SWAT is still a joke. Jumping elites with head sponges ftl.

Sweet, so I'm going home today for Spring Break (next week and a half) and my friend at home is gonna move his box to my place for the break. So I'll be playing LOTS of Halo over this time period. Who's in for some customs (Mythic or MLG)?

Plays nothing like it though. The key differences being Elongation/Longest were good maps and Orbital is an abortion.

The elite/spartan hitboxes really aren't a big deal to me, if you don't want to be at a disadvantage then just switch to elite for SWAT games. It's the superior being anyway.

Yes. Plus, the former maps were interesting and easy to move through, the latter involves many extended walks down long hallyways.

Fuck yea, lets get pissed over the fact this game is completely broken!

In other words I always thought the classic go-to 3-plots game was on Terminal.

/Prior to joining Bungie, Smith was known for his fiery opinions at enthusiast outlets Kotaku and 1UP.com. His time in development has quelled some, but not all of those fires. /

I realize this. Which is why you will note I did not say it played the same. Just that the setting and parallel hallways were similar. Also, cargo containers.

I do think Orbital is actually pretty good now that I've gotten oriented. But then I still maintain that Lockout was one of the worst Halo maps ever, so there's that.

I absolutely agree. I never noticed this until you pointed it out. Orbital is somewhat Elongation shaped like a pretzel. It's a fun map for all types of play.

It just baffles me how even the basic design of this map got past the drawing board. After making 3 Halo games with multiplayer components you'd figure they'd know what works and what doesn't by now. Who thought making a map with that consists almost exclusively of hallways with absolutely no alternate routes would be a good idea. Which classic Halo map did they draw inspiration from? The best maps in Halo, and almost all other shooters, are though that have strong chockpoints but ways of flanking around and attacking from different angles.

Multiflag is the only redeeming gametype on that map and even that's iffy because the people that spawn at the top level have a significant advantage.

/opinions invalidated permanently :lol :-P

From what I've played, I dig all three maps for specific gametypes and even more so when I'm playing with/against people who aren't fucking rainman Halo savants. One of the central problems with Halo 3's DLC is that they're being trickled into the community at the terminal velocity, break neck.... turtle speed. I firmly believe that this is the public enemy #1 when it comes to map performance in DLC thus far, even if some of the maps have frustrating aspects about them from a design standpoint.

In Halo 2, NINE maps were released in just about sixty days. NINE MAPS. Yes, I said NINE in 60 DAYS. When you're playing 2-3 maps a night for 3+ months between packs (and this is the shallow total btw -- we're at about a year and a half outside of the Heroic maps in December 2007) of course people are going to get tired of them much quicker. In mid-2005, we had nine different maps spanning like two or three playlists, each playlist having half a dozen maps in rotation.

As a result, I've played Halo 3 in segmented spurts at a few months at a time, diverting my attention to other titles. I refuse to be burnt out by a Halo game; I like them too much to let that happen. It should be noted that I didn't have to do this in Halo 2 and I'd argue, from a DLC standpoint, that it had less to do with the quality of the maps released and more to do with the fact that in well under one year we already had a patch in place and 20 maps to choose from.
