I know Bungie tells you not to do it, but has any one installed the game to the hard drive?
I had to do it after my disc stopped working.

The initial loads for some maps in campaign and multiplayer can be long, but they're more or less normal if you're playing from level-to-level in campaign (e: You finish Tsavo Highway and the game loads The Storm automatically).

Lotta fixin to be done in this thread.
Hey, man, don't knock it until you try it. I know HaloGAF in general doesn't like Gemini, but I'm going to see what I can do with it. I loved the map, and Sandtrap finally gives me the chance to make a (somewhat) respectable remake of Gemini. Any specific problems you had with the map? I'll try to tackle them.

Will it consist of only AR's on the map?
That wouldn't be any fun.

cool thanks

Yeah I got the LE that came scratched in that cheap ass tin case and the disc is 'bout dead

Looking through the pics again, I can't help but get excited about the possibility of multiple BTB maps coming to matchmaking courtesy of SandBox. I'm sure there will be the numerous remakes of Boarding Action, Lockout, Beaver Creek, Hang em High etc but IF/WHEN we see the multiple SandBox BTB maps in matchmaking, it will be a nice present for us who still play BTB. The pic showing the sky bubble blue grid reaching all the way through to the spot light tower just shows you how large a scale this map can be.

BTW hopefully those gaps in the walkways in this shot are closed up if this is one of the variants possibly making it into matchmaking :D

Wow, I was just looking back at all the maps in Halo 2 and I think I can safely say that I never once played an online match at Backwash. I didn't even recognize it at all from any of the pics that I found. Mind=blown.

Just got a chance to peruse all of the pictures and holy crap. Lot's of awesome here to be had. It does however remind me strangely of the rigged variant of Blackout, Cocop and I worked on a while back though.

No, but for real, awesome job Bungie. This map, because of its versatility, has probably arm-wrestled every other map in Halo history, to the ground. I can't wait to see the variants that are going to come from it.

First thing I'm going to work on will be a Bespin Platform remake from Star Wars Battlefront, complete and replete with man cannons and Banshees.

I wonder if matchmaking is affected by installation much? I wouldn't mind having less noise, but at the expensive of other people's enjoyment.
We were also wondering last night after Dirtbag's 360 died whether running a game off the HDD is easier on the 360. I haven't had a RRoD but I've had my DVD drive fail which an install undoubtedly help prevent. May run cooler too. There's a lot of benefits to installing the game including preventing the disc from getting scratched up.

I hope Bungie finds a way to make ODST run better installed to the HDD but IIRC it's because of the engine's optimization so we're probably out of luck.

Question: does this mean the soft ceiling for the ground map is above the sky bubble grid? As in, I can fly a Banshee all the way up to (and over) the sky bubble?

This, and how high can you go from the skybox until you hit a wall?

No, there's a soft ceiling in between, so you can't fly up out of the bottom area.

And if you try to fly down to the bottom area from the top, you run into a death zone.

urk over at HBO:

http://carnage.bungie.org/haloforum/halo.forum.pl?read=913993

From ground level, the barrier between is a soft-ceiling. It's pretty far up , so it's not going to be a huge hindrance for pilots, but yeah, you can't fly through it to the upper level.

From the upper level moving down, it's a kill volume. Players that fall through it die. Vehicles are sent through, but typically smash on impact below.

IIRC, loading the maps from the hard drive takes longer, so when in matchmaking, it displays the map picture and says loading....you'll cause everyone to be slower to get into a game, to some degree.

Gah. :\

Can't be all awesome all the time, I suppose. I'd forgotten about the death zone thing. I was imagining a level where each team spawns on separate bases on the top....with their flag down at the bottom. So the level turns into one giant dog fight to get into Banshees and Hornets, get down to the ground, pick up the flag and get it back up to the top.

Still, I imagine a variation can be done all at the top level - the only way to get to the flag is via flying vehicles. They mentioned the map has budget for several, I'm hoping that's at least 3 on each team. :D

Try to install it immediately if possible, if the disc gets too far you won't be able to do a full install with it. I had to borrow somebody else's disc to do the install.

Yeah, exactly. See my Bespin post above.

Plus, I think if teleporters are introduced effectively, you could emulate some of what you are looking to do, Ghaleon. Either way, dog fights above platforms is something that I was told would be impossible to do by another fan when they first announced Forge. Now things have been turned upside down and Forge is bigger and more bad ass than I think even Bungie had imagined.

People will be able to make some really interesting grifball courts with the sandbox sky-bubble.
No need to make outer walls, just concentrate on different shapes for the floor paneling.

I'm also really excited about the dog-fight arena's you can make by staking and deleting up in space..... Crimson Skies sequel confirmed!

Just saw the news about Sandbox's attic. Wow. Very clever.

halo-3-20090206012744233.jpg

A harbinger to the untold hundreds (thousands!) of interesting and fun map variants that are waiting to be made. I anticipate Voc will have a Sanctuary remake ready to go not long after Sandbox is released? Depending on the size limit of this upper deck, of course.

Also, that map looks like fun. I hope I get the chance to play it sometime (it strikes me as being similar to Wizard).

A Grifball court with no walls would kick ass.

And lower gravity.

Seems like that would result in a ridiculous amount of "play ball"s and make it more frustrating than fun.

And here's my whiny post-BWU comment:

Dreams broken. Only good news that came out of that was that there'd be multiple variants upon release.
- 5 week wait
- only two spheres whose properties can't be changed
- No way of blocking off the exterior of the map or changing the map size in any other way other than wasting budget and OLN on a hundred blocks

:(

Oh well, I had a lot of hopes for the map most of which I thought were probably going to be false but I thought there'd be a surprise or two left about the map. Still excited to go in and get my forge on.

5 fucking weeks bullshit motherfucking MS die in a fire!
:lol

The waiting for MS to let the maps go up on XBLMP is not only still fanning flames of hate but now with the sky bubble announced it's only intensified.

Heh - I remember playing an Avalanche variant that had been like this. Perusing my download history, it might be this one (or it might not; I don't have any way of checking at the moment). We played some 4v4 games that lasted FOREVER. :D

Been addicted to Forge recently and with that had two questions:

1) Are there any FAQs out there for Forge tricks like embedding objects within eachother?

2) Are there any crazy, must-have maps that I've inevitably overlooked?

In 2 months time, people will not care whether the maps are given away with cereal boxes or animal vaccinations.

Now, the ODST maps, well, looks like another unavoidable shitstorm.

A bump in max custom content is a must. I don't want to create a bunch of mule accounts to hold all the awesomeness that will spawn from this map.

This should teach you everything you want to learn. The site also has some really impressive forge maps.

Sooo much potential. My friend loves Forge, and he is going to go crazy one he hears this news (if he hasn't already).

On my drive home (~50 minutes) I designed the entire map in mah brain. Well, as close as I could without knowing the Forge palette. :lol

I was all fired up and ready to go build it when I remembered the map wasn't out yet.

:lol

I caught a glimpse of the Sandbox awesomesauce images a while ago. I'm finally home and can see them on my monitor. So so glorious.

Thank you, Bungie.

I couldn't help but notice how the gradual reveal of Sandbox has been working on TDG, in three simple steps.

Upon the first screen being released:

Bungie: slowly flooring skeptics, one at a time. :lol

I can't recall a single map that's had this kind of roll out before. (Of course, we haven't seen a map like this before either.)

Oh man, Bespin Platforms rocked. I loved the "bridges of death".

Do Kamino too. That level was fantastic.

Now where the hell is that damned skull going to be? :p

Shit I forgot all about those :lol

Just had an awesome idea and want to copyright that shit right now.

I was thinking of ways to make a map that utilized both the ground (because vehicle combat up top will be hard to pull off) as well as the sky bubble in one cohesive map.

Now here's my idea. Put a large barrier down the center of the map and the only way to cross to the other side is by going through teleporters that take you to the sky bubble. You'll then have to continue forward until you reach one of the teleporters on the other side of the sky bubble that take you to the other side of the map.

Sandbox all over my tits!

:lol Ghaleon you pretty much captured my changing attitude right there. If there were a gif of my changing facial expressions during the different reveals, it'd basically move from me rolling my eyes, to looking towards my screen with interest, to my jaw dropping and eyes getting big. :lol

Haha, that's an awesome idea. I loved that map back in the day. I'll bet it could be replicated, too.

It's one of the things I like about you - you call'em as you see'em. And when what you see is rapidly changing, well that gets called in real time. I just happened to read the thread right when the "holy shit" was posted and loled pretty hard. :lol

I posted this in the other thread, but I want to do a:

SUPERMARIOKARTUS_00011.png

Ghost Valley Halo Edition remake with Mongoose's.

I just realized:

This is akin to LITTLE BIG HALO. A console level editor that is friendly, easy to use, flexible, and like LBP, allows for 4 players to edit at the same time.

Now, of course, Foundry did this all before...but really, you were limited in scope and size. I never tried adding vehicles to it...mainly because it was so small. Heck, perhaps you can't even add vehicles.

So yeah...Sandbox is the shit.

Now Introducing: Kibbles Kapture! (lol)

Since gamevee no longer does grabs, I thought I'd help my fellow gaffers out. If anyone has any clips they would like recorded, send me a fileshare link and I'll capture it for you. I'll give you a download link and I'll upload it in Youtube HQ. While I can't capture in the amazing quality urk did, I can capture in 480p Widescreen with my internal capture card. I'll have quality samples tomorrow as clips are sent in. I shall be getting my beauty rest now.

Nice. Speaking of which, Bungie should have just uploaded videos to Youtube. They have a developer's API for doing that, we're doing it in the software I'm working on. Legal problems probably in this case, Bungie, Microsoft, etc. don't want to use Youtube, but so much easier than hosting your own uber servers.

Sweet I got a couple coming your way. Both of them involve screwing my teammates.

Great stuff. But hopefully, unlike Foundry, we'll get tons and tons of variants in Matchmaking, from Team Slayer, Objective, Snipers, and Doubles.

i have so many ideas running around in my head
i've been trying to draw them down so i don't forget
but i suck at drawing:(
at this moment in time i can for assembly and orbital but i cannot wait to get my hands on sandbox
april cannot come fast enough

Yeah, despite some folks, I think, getting mad over some 99% innocent totally not-my-fault accidents.

But these were cool moments...

And then mine and Thermite's 'hog landing straight up, and sitting like that 'til we got naded a minute or so later:
