Voc I became a little overwhelmed from reading that. :lol Refresh my memory: what evidence is there that Truth had been planing to overthrow the Elites since 2534?
This is all from The Cole Protocol.

In 2534, Truth and Regret devised a complex scheme in an attempt to locate the human homeworld. Truth had a supply of weapons produced with human engravings, and ordered a Kig-Yar (with promises of various rewards) named Reth to attempt to open trade channels with human Insurrectionists who'd been booted from their homeworld of Madrigal (by the Covenant, no less). Reth's orders were to trade this superior weaponry to the Rebels in exchange for information on humanity's inhabited planets.

When the operation was nearing completion, Regret simultaneously ordered a Sangheili - Thel 'Vadam - to put together a team to investigate the "mystery" of how humans were obtaining modified Covenant weaponry (the weaponry that Truth had commissioned). Regret sent a Brute "escort" with Thel's ship to the 23 Librae system. The end result of all of this would be that the Prophets would gain new information on human worlds; the Sangheili would arrive in the system and destroy the humans and the Kig-Yar (thinking that the Jackals were traitors), then the Sangheili would be destroyed by their Brute escort (by order of the Prophets), and, finally, the Prophets would accompany a fleet that would ultimately get rid of the Brutes, as well.

At this point, they'd have (if the plan went right) the location of Earth and/or other human-controlled worlds, and none would be the wiser - after all, there is a Council on High Charity that probably wouldn't take too kindly to the Prophets ordering Kig-Yar to trade weaponry for information - even if Regret and Mercy didn't plan to let the humans or the Kig-Yar live.

Regret specifically wonders if the Sangheili can be trusted: "Honor and nobility might one day get in the way of orders." (pg. 347) So we've known for some time now that the Prophets were extremely wary of the Sangheili, in addition to feeling no pity for tossing them aside whenever the need arose.

Folks should buy the book. It's a little rough around the edges, but it's worth it (IMO) for the extended backstory into the universe.

So since it looks like we'll be able to play the full Halo 3 multiplayer via the ODST disc, will we be able to install that to the HDD without any loading penalty as in Halo 3? It's the only game I don't have installed, but I really want to since my 360 gets quite loud while it's in the drive.

Has there been any word about it?

Kind of off topic, but is the music track Siege of Madrigal in reference to this Madrigal? Or is it some Myth reference?

I got mine today (got 7 XP in that playlist) and it just popped up after I went back to the matchmaking screen after winning. Strange that it's not working for you.
Yeah I'm up to 9 XP on the playlist and nothing came up. Guess I'll try again the next time a 7 on 7th playlist comes along.

Siege of Madrigal is a mission in the original Myth. The track plays during the diary entry/briefing before the mission begins.

EDIT:

Link

I love that kind of storytelling.

Thought so. The track is the bees knees either way.

I made one mistake in explaining - Regret didn't know about the plan at first. Truth let him in on the scheme later on (it actually caused some bad blood between them).

My God...playing with all of those 20 (and below) people in Social Team DLC for the Legendary achievements has totally ruined my skills :( And I still have 2 or 3 more to go.

And WTF. Why is the Oddball melee in Team Doubles not an insta-kill?

Of course, if I was Eric, I would have probably just said: There aren't Elite enemies in Halo 3: ODST -- and no need for fictional explanations so eat it bitches.

Yep, but it's also wise to note that Brutes do not, and have never liked being deployed alongside Elites - and vice versa - which is one fictional reason why they aren't encountered until Halo 2.

I might be mistaken - it's been a while since I played though it - but even in Halo 2 I don't think they fought alongside each other, even before the uprising. Though after the changing of the guard.

No, he's absolutely right. Brutes and Elites never get along and fiction would definitely dictate that they would rarely serve together. I guess I just felt like it would be acceptable given the implications from some stuff in First Strike. I could be wrong, but I believe there were Elites and Brutes together on the Unyielding Hierophant, which was some sort of control center presumed to be the housing unit for Regret's initial fleet by most fans. I think the reason people think it was Regret's invasion fleet is that the book states only about a dozen vessels escaped the control center's destruction and headed to Earth, which is just about the same amount of ships in Regret's initial invasion fleet at the beginning of Halo 2.

Of course, just speaking about the changing of the guard, given ODST's timeline.....
even if the brutes were deployed, they wouldnt have been appointed guards to the prophets yet, and as such wouldn't be wearing the armor we've already seen in the screenshots ( I think this is correct at least ). I still think we are going to see some foul play here, maybe some sort of betrayal by the hands of Truth and/or Regret, that he uses the brutes for instead of the elites.

I know? I wasn't disagreeing. Just adding to his point that it might not be reasonable to expect them to fight alongside in the first place.

Yeah, sorry, I think I phrased that wrong. I wasn't implying that you didn't know, but I guess it came across that way.

They go down like bowling pins.

This shot is amazing, looks like you charged in and fucking melee'd four of them in one go, the force sending them flying in every direction. If someone shopped a gravity hammer into your hands, I'd totally buy it.

The whole Brute/Elite thing might be solved by a simple retcon, something involving the presence of Brute ships during the first invasion, but Brute infantry was never deployed until later in the invasion, with the Elites being recalled to their ships (being benched, basically).

Or is this all ruled out by some other factor.

Yep. And you know what, one of the reasons I was a little taken aback by the whole fictional question by fans -- which was obviously the reason Bungie needed to address the hyperbole -- was because there were Brutes mentioned in Ghosts of Onyx. They were part of Regret's initial invasion fleet and in the book they were trying to destroy an orbital elevator stationed in Cuba about two weeks after Regret's jump, around the same time that Truth set the dreadnought's bow toward Sol.

When I read the book, I was wondering why the Brutes were still fighting at all. I guess at the time I thought that it was either a simple plot device to introduce the Brutes a bit more going into Halo 3 or maybe it was because they were acting autonomous for some reason, but whatever the initial purpose was for that event when the book was published, it's easily a clever enough answer leading up to an H3:ODST without Elites as enemies.

Yeah, that's what we're discussing now - and what you suggested is what Frank was referring to, which is that Brutes and Elites typically don't like to be deployed together, so it's possible that they may also not like traveling in the same fleet together. At this point we don't know how it will work, so one theory is as good as the next, I suppose.

I think another possibility is that Truth had a small fleet of Brutes "trailing" Regret. If this ends up being the case, there's a fictional foundation for it: Truth and Mercy had been worrying for some time about Regret's "inexperience." I think Conversations from the Universe may be the best place to go for an example; the following text is Truth speaking to Mercy:

I suggest that we continue as planned, but we would both do well to pay mind to Brother Regret, and provide wisdom and guidance as needed. This matter is too important to be left to inexperienced hands. Pity is no substitute for wisdom.
So it really wouldn't even be considered a "retcon," so to speak, since it would fall in line with what we already know about the relationships between the Prophets.

Yeah, that game night was fun except my dang friends kept on joining and sorta ruining it, next time we just need it on invite only, still don't know how they joined the last game.
Were those the people I was teamed up with? There was a group of guys that were annoying as fuck and seemed to know each other very well; didn't seem like they were gaffers. Ended up muting them pretty sortly into the night.

I had fun despite them though, woulda been much more enjoyable if we kept it GAF only but then again that's not my call. Just thought the purpose of GAF customs was to play with fellow GAFers.

Too many AR starts (AR + BR starts = win).

Elites aren't in because Bungie decided it was too much work to put them in. Who cares about the story explanation behind it? I wanted to fight Elites.

It's a disappointment. We have them.

All of us have them. You use it.
You embrace it. And then you move on.

I had the settings on invite only after the first hour before they came so I'm not sure how they got in. When everyone got booted and some left, they managed to get in again into an Invite only match. Might have something to when I handed over control to some folks between matches.

We'll certainly have to place tighter GAF only restrictions going forward. I don't think any gaffers there last night wanted them there either, didn't help that some of them were right asses. Those guys brought some disastrous lag along with them. I had had fun despite them, I think some of the maps would have worked better if we had less people as well.

You killed me alot.=P I swear you have a fetish for heights or something :lol , you'd always find your way to the highest vantage point each map and reign death to those below.

Dani, I'm sorry I couldn't join you; I was out celebrating my birthday with some friends at Chili's. You guys sound like you had a good time.:lol Next weekend I'll be right there with you, though!

Agreed. I enjoyed it. Sure it started out slow, but the whole side story with Thel was awesome and it picks up as it goes along.

I got on about 7pm EST, and saw your room was full.
Was waiting patiently for some people to leave the session, and then all of a sudden there wasn't a room anymore.
Next week, then.

So true. "EazyB is on the roof.... again."

Playing some Halo 2 last night, some Halo 3 today, and then the Halo Wars demo, really got me thinking we need an awesome Halo MMO.

AH NEEDS MOAR HALOS

Bungie updates have always been colorful and humorous and I'm really happy that Urk became Halo-famous, ... but the real meat could be trimmed down to a short bullet list.

This week's update's news:

  • New Mythic playlist when Halo Wars releases
  • Killballs are Forge objects that instantly kill you (max=2)
  • The Grid is there so you can easily line up your objects
  • There's a budget glitch on Sandbox but we're calling it a "little trick"
  • All Halo 3 maps plus 3 more exclusive maps will be in ODST

...but instead we get a million paragraphs full of adjectives, jokes and redundancies.

aaaaand begin the pile-on

I agree with you, Urk is a reeallllly good writer, but he does type too much.

FIRE URK INTO SPACE!

Updates need more xXx's and BxR's newb

Bungie should hire me to do the updates. They'll all be like this:

Old stuff = still old
New stuff = eventually
What's it do? = I guess you'll find out.

I enjoy the flowery writing, but I would get a kick out of an Update that consisted entirely of seven bullet points, one sentence each. :lol

I find getting a height advantage gives results in much better success. So yeah, if you want to find me look for the perch overseeing the rest of the arena :P
