Bomb1.jpg

We snag the bomb and pull it back. They push us back, toast our 'Hog with the laser, which is perched at the center. Here we've just flipped their Warthog and pinned the two guys driving it back under the stone archway. I move in and flip it, hop in the driver seat and load up the bomb carrier and a gunner. We make a break to clear their line in the center...

Bomb2.jpg

Alas, our gunner falls right as we get to the base.

Bomb3.jpg

We make it inside the (empty) base, a hail storm of grenades toasting the 'Hog outside.

Bomb4.jpg

Assume defensive positions.....

Bomb5.jpg

The come in my team mate's side. He makes a fatal mistake: he tries to BR someone in AR range. Result: spontaneous combustion. Don't let it happen to you.

Bomb6.jpg

I chuck my frags off the wall and around the corner, then dive in, trusty AR blazing.

Bomb7.jpg

They go down like bowling pins.

Bomb9.jpg

Bomb8.jpg

I'm not accustomed to seeing these kind of medals outside of Griffball or bomb detonations, so I was looking at them and didn't realize the bomb was disarmed for a moment.

Bomb10.jpg

About one second later a straggler comes in; I get off a few shots and then fall back to reload my AR. Given the close quarters, I'm thinking it will come in handy.

Bomb11.jpg

He comes around the corner with the BR. Alas. I have paper, he chose rock.

Bomb12.jpg

Okay, let's try that bomb planting thing again.

Bomb13.jpg

And here they come.

Bomb14.jpg

Unfortunately, at this point I have plasma grenades - one of them politely dropped'em on the first go around. That keeps them off the bomb for the crucial couple of seconds.

Bomb15.jpg

Ah, that's better.

All the king's horses...

Can you imagine a King of the Hill zone, with a KILLBALL in the middle of it? That would be stupid.
I agree.
Actually, it could be a lot of fun - you could call it 'King of the Ring', depending on how wide the hill zone was outside the kill zone. As long as you didn't step into it, it would mean you were protected from other hill-denizens.

Then again, we're highlighting the difference between Action-Sack-type gametypes (and the folks who enjoy them) and MLG-type gametypes (and the folks who enjoy THEM).

Holy crap, dude...

Anyways, KILLBALLS (I felt obligated to type it in all caps) seem like a really good tool for map makers. Since you can't really create a "fall to your death" scenario in some of these maps, you can emulate it with this. I'm thinking some "Boarding Action" esque level where if you would have two of these in the middle and close it off so that it's a deathtrap.

Who in the hell would want to remake Boarding Action? Gross.

Ben, :lol

You never miss a chance to complain about AR starts, do you? :lol Chill out. The map is fun with AR starts.
you must say things just to get a reaction because no one in their right mind actually believes this. there are a lot of spawns outside the base and not near a br run into someone who has a br and you're screwed 5 sec. after you spawn. how is that fun?

It's awful.
Only because it isn't a BR. If you had you're way, everything would be BR starts.

No, I don't. AR starts is FUN on Avalanche.

Not everyone has a BR on Avalanche. Besides, I can't recall that ever happening to me, or at least happen enough to say that is a problem.

well then, since it looks like i will not have to make a Grifball Court i will spend my time building my 'dream map' on Sandbox

Your. We can do this all day.

Also, good stuff, Ghaleon. I've never been able to get higher than an Overkill on non-Griffball games =/

Check Ghaleon out - clearing out whole rooms in a single blow - twice!

Just popped in Halo 3 and playing some Social Skirmish with friends right now - it's been a while, but it feels so good again...

And good to hear about Bungie handing out maps to the community Luke - this is why you guys are a cut above the rest...

It's just a PR stunt to gain headlines on the gaming websites. Luke never mentioned qty. So expect like 10 codes to be handed out. 9 here on NeoGAF. :lol

They also gave out codes en masse for the Beta, Heroic and Legendary map packs. You might have missed this because there weren't headlines on gaming websites - they just sent them directly to fans. :p

Awesome Valhalla story, Ghaleon.

And Dax's sheer idiocy never ceases to amaze me. He thinks he can defend anything by saying "its problems don't show up frequently enough for it to be a bad decision" or this gem "I just have fun in a different way". I can only hope that the day his pubes begin to grow in they bring along some logic.

I think he was tellin a joke.

no u

I can almost understand liking to use the AR on every other map in Halo, but Avalanche? There are only three places on the whole map where ARs would be almost useful: Middle shotgun, and the two bases. Every other part of the map involves mid to long range combat. And ARs are useless against vehicles.

Ghaleon, that last screen is just amazing.

I never knew that they sent out codes to fans before this? I've never heard of it from Bungie.

I think I can anything with those two statements? Really? Just because I have fun with AR starts on maps like Avalanche and Valhalla, and you don't, it means I'm illogical? I've said this before and I'll say this again: I have no problem with either weapon start on those types of maps just as long as it isn't with one weapon one-hundred percent of the time. Whether or not I spawn with an AR or a BR affects the way I go about a map from my spawn, what weapons I pick up along the way, and if I decide to take a vehicle or not.

And Dax's sheer idiocy never ceases to amaze me. I can only hope that the day his pubes begin to grow in they bring along some logic.
And your immaturity never ceases to amaze me. It's a videogame. Relax.

For one, I don't like AR starts on Sandtrap. That map is too big, and Avalanche isn't that big that you can't get around on foot, unlike Sandtrap. Most of the time when I spawn with an AR, I go through the teleporters and get to where the Spartan laser is, go to the middle where the shotgun is, or take a vehicle. I'll stick to the sides and places where the AR is most useful, until I abandon it. When I spawn with a BR, I usually walk about the more open parts of the map. Different weapon starts offer different experiences.

And ARs are useless against vehicles.
So are BRs for the most part. The only vehicles it is useful against are the warthog and the mongoose. And even then, you need to be in a special circumstance to take either out with that weapon.

I wasn't really insulting you, just making a comparison that is pretty reasonable.
Sorry.

Bungie updates have always been colorful and humorous and I'm really happy that Urk became Halo-famous, ... but the real meat could be trimmed down to a short bullet list.

This week's update's news:

  • New Mythic playlist when Halo Wars releases
  • Killballs are Forge objects that instantly kill you (max=2)
  • The Grid is there so you can easily line up your objects
  • There's a budget glitch on Sandbox but we're calling it a "little trick"
  • All Halo 3 maps plus 3 more exclusive maps will be in ODST

...but instead we get a million paragraphs full of adjectives, jokes and redundancies.

aaaaand begin the pile-on

Holy shit @ Ghaleon's Valhalla story.

Also, I think the codes thing was a joke.

Dax, spawning with an AR, on Avalanche of all maps, doesn't allow you couldn't do if you spawned with a BR instead. The AR in fact limits you to having to go scavenger hunting for something useful like another weapon or a vehicle. If being forced to run around the map before becoming useful is what makes it fun for you than you are a dumb person.

Most books can be trimmed down to bullet lists.

(Too lazy to insert humorous example)

The updates, and especially the last one, have been pretty meaty with their details. They also throw some interesting/humorous stories that come out of Bungie HQ. The BWU are for the fans, not for the Halo 3 player that just wants the facts, if so just check out a press release instead.

Uh, no guy - already beaten by Ghaleon, but the gave out tons of beta codes not only at Bungie.net but on here as well - I would know since I got one from Frankie himself...

Yeah I realize the fluff is just there for the fans' entertainment and this week's bloated overview of the budget system is just for the casual players who might not have Forged for a while.

I think my problem is that I miss Frankie's writing. Often imitated, never duplicated etc etc

What is he doing these days anyway? I know he's working on Halo stuff for Microsoft but that's all I know. Is he writing or just overseeing stuff as a sort of quality control?

Probably no good at all. But, in all seriousness, why would someone be interested in buying a campaign expansion to Halo 3 if they didn't own Halo 3?

I wouldn't be surprised if the game came with the actual H3 multiplayer mode with full set of maps preinstalled on the disc. It almost seems likely.

Yeah, that's a theory that's been floating around.

We are starting to get into $60 territory. : (

But then you'd be missing all of the epic dream-crushing Bungie has been dishing out the past 3 weeks. First, no Elites. Then no Brute pimps. And now the double whammy of no amazing blue grid-delete-floor-uber-skyboxes-enviroment tool and only two death balls.

I'm not sure who said it earlier (EazyB maybe?) or maybe I heard it in the IRC, but have rectangular death sheets would be awesome. Then we could recreate the classics like Lockout and Ascension.

Think about the lack of multiplayer expansion disk this generation, I'd happily have ODST on the shelf with the full expanded multiplayer experience. Some poor soul walking into the shop and never having owned Halo 3 before will have probably the hottest software package of the year.
