Fuck. Just... fuck.

After several weeks of working perfectly, my Halo 3 disk has crapped itself. Every single map, multiplayer or campaign, fails to load. It won't install to the hard drive. Anything that might help? (Disk polishing, some other cleaning, replacement program, new disk aaaaargh)

Boiling the disc in water can work as a last resort. Just don't let it touch the sides or bottom of the pan.

Wait, a picture was news? Got to frame that picture with sexy words. =)
The last few maps were revealed by dropping a screen or few in an Update, and then adding detail and context the following week. I suspect the screen was to be parked at the end of the Update for something to discuss over the weekend. And then the formal Mythic Map Pack announcement next week with more details.

So as it turns out, E309 isn't open to the public, as was rumoured. Looks like there will not be another HaloGAF party until PAX09.

I thought it was confirmed to be open to the public to a certain max population? 35-40k or so IIRC. Something change in that regard?

The screenshot was attached to the press release that went out early. There are words, but nobody cared about them once the picture hit. ;)

Also, no eggs on my list, Ben.

He should throw those two together and save some more money to buy Halo Wars LE.

Sounds a little risky.
Well if your disk won't load (make sure to check with another console so you know it's not your 360) it's about all you can do. If you get it working again you should save it to your HDD to make sure you can continue to play it.

Gamefly or rent a copy and swap discs or install the rented one to your HDD and see if it'll recognize your old disk.

New Halo 3 Mythic Map Pack Details Revealed
Microsoft today revealed details around the final “Halo 3” map, Sandbox, which will be included in the “Halo 3” Mythic Map Pack. The Mythic map pack is a collection of three new “Halo 3” maps which will be available first with the Limited Collector’s Edition of “Halo Wars”, which releases Feb. 26 in Asia, Feb. 27 in Europe and March 3 in the Americas. With Ensemble Studios’ genre-defining strategy game “Halo Wars” releasing soon and amazing new maps arriving from Bungie for “Halo 3”, “Halo” fans have a lot to look forward to.

The three maps included in the pack are Sandbox, Assembly and Orbital.

Sandbox combines large-scale vehicular combat with a limitless amount of Forge customization. Boasting a tiered, open-world layout, “Halo 3” players will be able to build their own unique game experiences using the Forge map editor. Sandbox is a map unlike any Bungie has ever created.

Assembly is set in the heart of a Covenant Scarab manufacturing facility. With two identical bases on either side of this medium-sized map, it’s a perfect environment for both Slayer and objective games like Capture the Flag and Assault.

Orbital, a small asymmetrical map, is set in the docking station of the Quito Space Tether. One-sided games like One Flag, and One Bomb are sure to become quick fan-favorites, but the Slayer faithful will also find plenty of action on this battleground.

Be sure to check out www.xbox.com and www.bungie.net for all the latest information and screenshots of the new maps. You can also visit our press FTP site for more screenshots: http://edelmanadmin.psni.com/public/Halo 3/

*Players will need a copy of “Halo 3” to play the Mythic Map Pack.
Nice.

The more I think about it technically the more I believe the blue grid means nothing. But when I think about how easy it is to connect the dots and believe we'll be able to use this grid it's hard for me to understand how Bungie couldn't expect us to make the assumptions we have.

The scenes with the campaign characters was a similar situation but even more technically daunting yet Bungie realized it was partially their fault for leading the community to those expectations and eventually dismissed the rumors about campaign editors and such. Which makes me want to believe they would have actually addressed this if it were false because all the signs they've shown point true.

Unless Bungie is a jerk; which I can't dismiss.

so it seems that Assembly is the remake or Midship in Halo2, am I correct?

edit:
ign has resized the 5120*2880 resolution'ed pix and put them online

No. Assembly was unveiled six months ago at PAX where everyone got to play it. It's a brand new map.

The zip on their FTP site just holds the same screenshots that leaked yesterday, so don't waste your time downloading it.

Did IGN really add their watermark to those pics?

I bet they did it for the lulz. Can you imagine the trolling power of bungle?

I'm going to be playing a lot more Halo 3. I've been bored with all my games recently and forgot how fun H3 can be. I've added GAF Halo 3 to my friends list and I'm looking forward to playing with some GAFers. Randoms suck.

I'm amazed they're still over 100kb.

I envy their trolling potential. They capitalize on it pretty well but there are many wasted opportunities.

The terrible things I would do if I were in their position...

So I guess the question at this point is: what exactly does "tiered, open-world" mean?

What does that make Foundry?

At least Foundry has a unique layout. Both teams spawning behind a wall. And each side is totally different.

The biggest problem with Foundry is the team that spawns on the forklift side has such a huge adnvantage being able to get to rockets and snipe so much quicker and easier.

Sandbox looks like they designed it in a half hour and just said, "Fuck it, its a forge map.".

So, the mythic pack has a remake and this pitiful offering.

Orbital looks like they took some time and care with it.

The remake and Sandbox should be free.

Okay, first... the remake? :lol

And second, Sandbox should be free because you don't like the default layout?

Bolded just shows how educated you are about the upcoming map pack. You could have reduced your post to just that and I would have gotten the same thing out of it.

You. Are. Wrong.

The press release hypes the map as unique, which it is, even if all it is is what's visible in the screenshot. The screenshot shows a map which consists of just terrain, with a playable area in the center that can be customized with Forge objects.

It also says it's an open world layout. A tiered open-world layout. What does tiered mean? It often indicates levels or layers. That can be interpreted in many ways, but I'm guessing it's just marketing speak for "many different things can be done with it".

I'm still pretty sure we won't be seeing a blue grid. I'm pretty sure we won't be seeing the ability to change the landscape or skybox, or even pick from a set of pre-defined landscapes.

I think the lighting is the way it is because of technical issues with dynamic Forge objects not casting shadows. They needed to make the scene dark, and light apparently come from directly above. I'm guessing there's actually something in the scene to explain the light coming from above as well, such as a large orange moon or something.

He might be thinking of the..err.. rest of the Mythic map pack coming with ODST, that has a rumored remake of Midship.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh.

Isn't the system designed in such a way to prohibit such things?

By 'tiered', they could mean there is also an underground area?
By "tiered," they mean "multiple layers," and by "multiple layers," I mean "blue grid with landscapes/skyboxes that can be placed on it."

The system is designed so that you can't install a game and run the game without that same game being in the drive. I'm not sure if it's disk specific or simply game specific but if I had to guess I'd say game specific because I don't think each individual disk has anything special to identify it. I could be totally wrong though, someone smart should know.

No Heretic is the remake of Midship. Assembly is similar in look, but that's about it.

Unless of course Assembly is tiered and there's a basement in which the entirety of Midship is hidden. I mean where else could they be hiding the skull. I walked all around the map at PAX (thanks to the fact I spawned with an AR) and found no skull so it must be downstairs.

Chernobyled redeemed.

If anybody could clarify this, this would be most helpful. I hope it's not disk specific.

It has to be game specific. Like Eazy said, each disc is printed identical to the rest.

EazyB is right. You can install the game to hard drive using a rented disk then play the game using your broken disk as long as your broken disk will spin up and read that it's Halo 3 from the dashboard. Games don't have unique IDs printed on them per disk.

Alternatively, I'd recommend calling up Blockbuster and asking if they have a disk scratch remover, my local Blockbuster does and charges $4. It saved my scratched Halo 2 disk back in the day.

We already know this, my friend:

Halo 3: Dark Planetoid Rising: Episode I: A World of Flight

When the Chief and Cortana find themselves on a mysterious new Forerunner world, they realize that they've stumbled upon something unimaginable -- an Elite Flight armor factory.

BEHOLD, THE GLORY OF FLIGHT!

[Chief puts ruby flight helmet on, ready to draw the blood of his enemies. He mounts a Chopper and rides off in the horizon of the planetoid.]

K, thanks. If I can't get my disk working from boiling or toothpaste or other weird methods, I'll go with a rent install.

Also, note the different skybox, that looks like a moon to me.
Could be opposite the sun set on the other side, or could be an entirely different skybox.
