I'd really like to know everyone else's opinions on their previous expectations of Foundry, how it lived up to them, what their expectations of Sandbox are, and how Foundry's handling has affected their expectations (if at all)?
I didn't think Foundry would even be in MM given the nature of the map. I thought there might be a chance for a community Foundry playlist where the public's maps could be featured (it does sound like a massive undertaking, though), but instead they slapped in a default layout anyway and threw it in general MM. A map with endless possibilities like Foundry really deserves a much better default layout, plain and simple. The current layout is terrible.

As for Sandbox, I'm just waiting for it to be revealed. No expectations here.

Why not put the MLG variants into Team/Social slayer?
The Pit in MLG is great. That's the only map I would completely love to go into Team Slayer, Team Snipers, and Team Objective. The boxes being placed along the map is great help.

Is it just me, or is it a little too easy for the offending team in Ghost Town to grab a hold of the flag in 1 Flag CTF?
It is fairly easier than most other 1 side CTF battles. For example, High Ground, Last Resort, Standoff...

Is Blackout 1-CTF in Team Objective? I think that could be okay. Lockout 1-CTF was pretty fun. I wonder about Guardian for something other than KotH and Oddball, but it's rather small.

The main issue I have with Ghost Town 1-CTF is spawns. If you clear out their base, the best way to go score is through the green house/sniper spawn. The opponents spawn near the Bubble Shield/Shotgun area.

OK, Halogaf, here's an open challenge. From the pool of available maps, choose one and make a variant that you think would be acceptable in the current playlist structure.
I'll bite.

I call it The Best Map.

Default Valhalla, great right? Course, the one thing that could make it better? Choppers.

Here's the slew of vehicles at the team's disposal:
64143291-Full.jpg

The choppers are on the same respond rate as the warthogs, 90 seconds. The Banshee's respawn is upped slightly because it's overpowered unless unsatisfying and unfun weapons like the laser and missile pod are easily available.

Here's a screen of a majestic creature stepping lightly off the bright green grass to situate itself onto a marvelous piece of machinery:
64143356-Full.jpg

The laser remains in the middle and with the same respond rate but with the increase in vehicles and a decreased respond rate on the missile pod, vehicles will be able to roam more safely. Vehicles, IMO, don't play a big enough role in default Valhalla because with the laser, missile pods, brute shots, plasma pistols, and power drainers; it's almost a death wish.

These choppers can maneuver anywhere in Valhalla

It can jump off the broken peli wing!
64143870-Full.jpg

The bubble shield area has been beefed up a bit, there are two barriers there to give its occupants some cover. A third chopper on a slightly longer respawn rate waits here for more vehicular awesomeness.

You can jump a chopper right into the mother fuckin bases!

Maxed out BR placements as well

I think if you just put the flag back a little, into one of the corners in the back of the base, it would be fine.

I don't think so.

Which Team-based playlists actually use Blackout?

I've had a hankering to play, but can't seem to find it in Social Team DLC, or Social Slayer.

Funnily enough (I meant to mention this yesterday) I got two games of Blackout in a row in Social Team DLC. Was really happy, for me it's practically a new map.

Lockout flag was fun because there were so many possible ways you could take the flag, not being able to throw the flag anymore and the removal of some of the jumps would probably make it suck like everything else on the map now.

After checking the Playlist details, and hearing your first hand account, it does appear to be in the Social Team DLC playlist!

Guess i'll have to keep playing and hope it comes up. I've got 10XP in the playlist, and have definitely played a few more and lost, and not even seen it crop up/vetoed etc.

Thanks for the replies guys - might have to check out SWAT and Doubles for a slice of Blackout fun. It is weird how little i've played both Blackout and Ghost Town, yet played an absurd amount of Avalanche. I'd love to see Blackout better represented in playlists.

Really? In my opinion, 1-Flag 3v3 on Lockout was the unsung hero of small objective gametypes in Halo 2, closely followed by CTF classic on Midship. I have many a fond memory of jumping from ledge to ledge risking a fall, tossing the flag to a waiting team mate across a chasm and inching it across the main platform in a protracted grenade/BR fest. Sometimes 1-Flag CTF on Lockout felt like a grappling match round by round and inch by inch and sometimes a flag assault worked like flawlessly, everyone hitting the right note at the right moment like a finely tuned machine. Good times.

I know people rag on Blackout because it's somewhat displaced from its predecessor by its art and a few functional attributes, but it's easily one of the best small maps in Halo 3 -- at least in my opinion. I almost always have a fun time on it and in many ways it plays just like its predecessor. I think its one of the most underrated maps in the game.

That's not saying much though, there aren't that many to begin with. I never recall having spawning issues on Lockout, but Blackout is plagued by them in every match. Closing the window in the library was another baffling move, the map just doesn't flow well at all.

Still? I haven't noticed any since the patch, even in 5v5 Team BRs.

I like Blackout. I don't like the changes from Lockout but I still think it's a good map. Blackout and Guardian are my two favourite slayer maps.

Unholy love for the chopper translated into an interesting variant, very nice. I can easily see how it would play differently, Valhalla does need more vehicle love and your chopper inserts and changes seem like an ideal variant. Would love to give it a try.

None of the patches fixed spawning issues did they?

Um, what? :lol Voc, I said "I don't think so" to his question on CTF being 1 flag on Blackout in Team Objective, not about whether it was a good idea or not.

Not being able to "throw the flag" was a gameplay decision made by Bungie and is not exclusive to BlackOut. Mind telling me what jumps were removed that would probably "make it suck?"

And BlackOut is an awesome map, besides for the spawning issue.

Awwww man! Dangit! And that made the map better in so many different ways, too!

I never used that, nor any of the "pro" jumps that were had in Lockout. Not a game breaker for me.

Why would I bother explaining anything to you, I might as well talk to the wall.

Case in point, your post above. Spawning at BR1 7 times in a row with an AR is good times in your world, so yea.

Prty mch.

Looks like the ragdoll on the model caused it to flip out. Latency might've been a factor as well.

Not trying to rag on you since that has already been done in the last few posts but why would you even bother asking the question if you knew no matter which jump he listed this would have been your answer?

Smashed is the Ghost Town of Foundry maps :lol
I don't actually take issue with the "textures" in Ghost Town but this shit is embarrassing.

I haven't gotten to play on that map but I ran around it early and IIRC there is absolutely no interlocking. That probably played a big role into why it got chosen for MM as Bungie probably doesn't want to condone the manipulation of their tools. Once you rule out all the maps with interlocking (a technique almost all decent forgers use) you're probably left with a very select few well designed maps. They probably let the MLG interlocked maps through because they give MLG a lot more freedom with the playlist's content.

Interlocking isn't just some skill forgers use to just "show how leet" they are with forge, it's an invaluable skill that serves purposes well beyond the aesthetics of a map. It took just 5 minutes of running around Smashed and seeing how gaps were haphazardly "filled" by placing walls in between the geometry and getting caught in unlevel flooring and other anomalies.

If the map is well designed and place like sex, that's great. But there's no reason Bungie couldn't have gone in and edited the map with interlocking to make it more playable and to prevent silly shit like flags and grenades slipping beneath the level. Continues to make me doubt we'll ever see Foundry/Sandbox live up to its potential.

Yeah, it wasn't the best connection ever. At the time i was pretty tired too, I couldnt stop laughing for a full minute after that happened, tears were shed :lol

Gotta love some of the crazy stuff that happens in Halo

You can't resist being condescending towards me, can you? Just because I prefer to play Halo 3 a different way than you do, it means I am wrong or less right than you are?

Where (or what) is BR1?

I should have just kept my mouth shut....

What? Why? It doesn't bother me that you can't make a jump from "elbow" to "S2" or whatever, especially since I never used it much anyway. It's not a game breaker in anyway, nor does it make the map "broken." If you disagree, fine, but I'm just speaking for me.

The jump he described is pretty much the only one I could think of, and I never used that one much. I used some simple jumps, and I wanted to see which other jumps he was talking about so that can jog my memory.

I am just happy to see more map options available whether I like the map or not. Does anyone know where smashed originated? Is it out of forge hub or was it one of those deals where if you forwarded it to 5 friends you got recon?

Sure I get a little satisfaction knowing that more than a year after Foundry's release we're getting a single team based map variant for the it but then again it's been more than a year after Foundry's release and we've only gotten a single team based map variant.

Shiska came in here and said that most community made maps are shitty and focus only on forge tricks while disregarding gameplay yet when after a year he finally finds a map worthy of being placed alongside Default Foundry he picks a rough-draft quality map variant.

Obligatory "U mad?" Yes it makes me mad.

I realize wading through millions of shit files to find decent ones would be a hard task for a single man, but with sites like Forge Hub and through the tools set up by Bungie themselves at Bungie.net, I've expected better results.

I posted this a while ago but here's the only link to the map (that I can find when searching for Smashed at Bnet). The map's original author says "Smashed" by A Glacier on 11.06.2008. But as you can see A Glacier does not exist so who knows where this gem spawned from.

People actually use BR1, BR2 or BR3? Why waste time saying the R? My friends and I always just referred to it as B1, B2 or B3.
Why waste time with two syllables? Just assign a syllable to each platform. Like, "bwah" "bwoo" and "bwee" for BR1-3, and "swah," "swoo" and "swee" for S1-3.

Maybe they should just assign arbitrary numbers to random locations. Would be awesome trying to play a game with a random person on your team. :lol

In the heat of battle, I used my own descriptors for areas, usually based on what's going on in game or whatever I see around my dead body. "The small area, where I keep dying", "Near the mound of bodies" or my favourite "over there".
