I love AR starts when I have the BR.

The reason for AR starts (which seems obvious to me and why its not going away any time soon) is one part accessibility -it's a very average and easy to use weapon, and one part variety. Bungie has stated many times that they don't want every encounter to be a BR on BR battle, they want you to pick up different weapons along the way so they spawn you with a very capable (but ultimately swap-able) weapon in the AR. It can be frustrating when all you want to do is take people down from range, but now they've forced you to change tactics and strategies.. just like with equipment. Their decisions seem pretty obvious to me. BR starts might be more appropriate for a ranked playlist, but your tactics should adapt to whatever tools you have at hand.. be McGyver.

STORY TIME INTERMISSION

We had a marine on this playthrough, I called him Joe. Joe was fairly unlucky, and that trait would soon get him into a lot of trouble.

jan25_2009_14.jpg

... immediately.

jan25_2009_13.jpg

As the heated barbs of the spike grenade gnaw at his flesh, Joe lets none of the excruciating pain bubble to the surface. What a stoic!

jan25_2009_12.jpg

And onward came the Brute Shot grenades, but he didn't even wince.

jan25_2009_9.jpg

This was to be poor, hapless Joe's end.

god damnit heavies is STILL garbage. Get rid of those damn lasers. At one point I was in the base on Standoff. I killed two enemies who BOTH DROPPED LASERS. I picked up one. And then a laser spawned right next to the other one that dropped. Thats three freaking lasers. THREE LASERS.

I am convinced that Heavies needs to remove all lasers, replace them with rockets if needed

PLASMA PISTOL SECONDARY STARTS

I'm guessing this has already mentioned and I'm LTTP, but it looks like someone kicked up some dust from the cutting room floor right onto B.net's face. This is the hologram from Epitaph -- the one which looks really similar to the "Guardian" character/thing in the art book -- evidently some sort of Forerunner entity that never made it into the campaign.

All I see are two white dots on the top right of a pitch black picture. :(

It's there, but it's definitely dark. This should be a better shot:

Same holographic image found at the top of Epitaph and strikingly similar to the "Guardian" image in The Art of Halo 3 (pg. 31). Looks like some sort of Forerunner entity and I don't remember it from campaign.

It's probably just someone tinkering with the front page background -- as they have in the past with the Ark before.

god damn bungie made the humans look like shit in this game
The character models in general look pretty damn bad. I hope they've made some improvements in that department. Aside from lack of AA that's the only thing that bugged me about the visuals. More detail in the gun models would be nice as well.

Ha I just read the part where you mentioned that you are a level 50, how embarrasing. I could care less if you are a level 50. Level means absolutley nothing, it just gauges how much investment you have put into the game. I actually stopped playing matchmaking so I wouldn't be a general grade 2. Striving to be a rank just shows how bad you are. If I had a dollar for how many generals are complete garbage I would be rich. If you want my respect or want to impress me go to an event. Otherwise being a level 50 just means you are an xbl warrior.

i'm not a big fan of standoff but i find 5v5/6v6 to be the perfect amount of people on it. more and its to crowded
I used to think that, but I've gotten used to it in BTB. Slayer on that map with 8v8 is intense, but not too crowded.

Great games earlier today Tashi. We had a few really solid games in there.

yea for sure. Some of the games were surprisingly laggy though. I usually get good games when I play MLG. Can't believe that fucking Onslaught CTF where out teamate lagged/quit out of the match. Sooo annoying. We had that shit too. We'll definitely play again though.

Played a shit ton of Halo today. Awesome games all around.

I've played 5000
and 1
matches! Never thought I'd throw this much time into a single game, well done Bungie. Still won't stop bitching until I see the chopper on Valhalla though.

I'm hear to whip you guys into shape. Get this, FREE 1v1 lessons from yours truly. If you win you get to be on my pro game battles squad. You know you want it.:D

The amount of times people have said to me to get some sleep, hah.

I found the best time to stop is when your performance drops so bad your team ends up carrying you.

I've had a few of those days, waking up at 6:30am the next day makes it even worse...

The fact that slayer is preferred so greatly over skirmish games makes me die a little on the inside. :(

Though I guess it is easier to jump into slayer games without a full party/team.

Yeah I never understood that. Guess people are bloodthirsty or they really want to show off their leet skillz?

I'm very LLTP with HBO, but I have to admit after following it for a few weeks, colour me impressed.

Here's something that should be interesting for some folk here from the news.

Halo 3 Optimatch Charts
It's crazy to see how low the Rumble Pit population is. I never play that playlist but was always under the impression that it was one of the most popular ones. But looking at the stats at HBO shows that recently it's been the second lowest playlist and it's ranked alternative is much higher (which goes against the general trend).

Maybe my assumptions about Rumble Pit were inaccurate but maybe it's seem a big drop since it was made DLC required. If it has seen a significant drop I wouldn't be surprised if it's hurt the overall Halo 3 population as well. Rumble Pit seems like the perfect place for casual players to hop on with a guest and AR people.

Continuing to assume it's seen a big drop, I wonder how Bungie will respond. I still think the Legendary maps will be made free shortly before the Mythic maps are actually released but to hold onto that Rumble Pit crowd maybe Bungie will go back and "unrequire" the DLC for the time being.

The Legendary requirement for Rumble Pit has to be the reason for it's drop in numbers, if infact it has seen a decrease. Bungie will also not be ignorant of this, so I'd place my bets on that changing.

At this point I think it's also clear Bungie has no control over the pricing or release structure of anything Halo related. Map packs too. Will be interesting to see if the sales drop off from the Legendary maps and the up coming Mythic releases will help those Legendary maps become free sooner rather than later.

The whole "no plans to make free" worked enough to increase the map sales, as did the price cut. MS can surely not expect to strangle more sales from it. Releasing it free before Mythic hits will certainly increase the immediate online player base, ripe for selling Mythic to.

I cannot wait for Bungie to bring out their next original IP and hopefully we'll see developer controlled post release support in the vein that Bungie had intended with Halo 3 (the fact that Mythic was finished months ago points to Bungie wanting them out of the door months ago).

My prediction: by the next update, if there is a next update, Squad Battle is out.
I really like the playlist. But whenever we play, we can't get matched up in it. We'll give it about five minutes of searching, and then we have to move to a Social hopper. : (

The crappy part about all of this is that the casual people that don't have the legendary maps would have just hopped on one day to see that they can't play that playlist anymore. I doubt that person would be keeping up with weather or not that playlist stops requiring legendary down the road so they might just move on to some other game.

Yeah, it's the same for me. Whenever I try to play with a group (usually 5-6), we can't find a match and end up switching to Social.

Is it really impossible to get a ranked hopper with over 4 people to work, Bungie?

Very possible, and from the limited data we have, it appears that casuals also make up the majority of the game. Not a good combination.

This is just another example of how hard it must be to balance out the hoppers.

I can vouch for the exact same situations. I believe this killed Big Team Ranked, the inability to find matches, and I'd hate to see the same issue remove another playlist.

how about bungie releases some new content instead of giving us more AR starts on avalanche, or double exp grifball weekends. that would stimulate the playlist populations a bit.
