So? Besides, looking back at it, what Falagard and Son of Godzilla are saying make sense. That's probably what he meant, but if not, I personally don't care.

Falagard said:
Yeah, that's probably what he meant, but it came out poorly.

He should have just said "In the FPS, you control one character and can only do one thing at a time. In an RTS you control multiple characters each with their own strengths and weaknesses."

Cocopjojo said:
I just watched the vidoc on my 360 and it looks good; the environments look amazing. There was still some wonky stuff, though, like a Spartan leaping about a hundred feet in the air to jack a flying vehicle. And it looked like some UNSC vehicles (maybe Gauss 'hogs?) were firing purple plasma or something.
I don't like the UNSC robot walker thing.

Huh?

I personally think it is kind of messed up that they are making a Halo RTS multiplayer when apparently they have little knowledge of what makes the Halo FPS multiplayer great.
An RTS and an FPS are two completely different genres, and play in a completely different way. How is looking at an FPS game's gameplay going to help them make a good RTS?

Ok, a lot of this Halo Wars hate is really annoying, I know most of it is from the maps or they don't believe it will catch the real feel of Halo. I've kept my mouth shut about the game, and will let the demo decide if I will like it or not (which I suggest a lot of you do). Plus you guys are taking that comment in the video out of proportion by far, it is a RTS or real time STRATEGY, so it does require more strategy than a regular FPS, but that does not mean Halo doesn't have any strategy at all, in fact it has a lot more than all of the other FPS's out there. So can't we just hold our judgment of the game until the demo so people can play it. Ensemble is a great studio (to bad they will be no more), so everyone gather around, and wait to criticize or celebrate the game.

Now to retreat back to my own area.

I am actually still hoping Halo Wars will be good, I just thought it was really strange that they would making comments that Halo 3 has no depth.

As long as the cutscenes are well written, I think I'll enjoy watching them while the maps load. So that Prophet that was briefly shown in the video, is that Regret? I heard him mentioned as an in-game unit or something.

What? He was clearly contrasting what is different between a FPS Halo and an RTS Halo, and he's right. You're controlling the Chief and you're handling one weapon and one strategy at a time in H3, in an RTS the scale of decisions naturally involve many more soldiers.

WHAT? they never said that. they said first person shooters are different from rts games.

I can has Bungie podcast tonight? kthx (Probably won't happen until after the Sandbox reveal, and since Luke was down in San Francisco with the ole' 1UP Crew.)

"single weapon and single tactic"

I think it's safe to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he meant the difference between fps and rts but communicated it pretty shitty.

I always forget the BWU is up on Fridays. I'm hoping for a overall layout of Assembly and Orbital. They're probably saving the Sandbox reveal for a gaming mag or other journalistic reveal.

First I'd like to say Congratulation to Ensemble on Halo Wars going gold.

Secondly, the demo comes out on Feb 5th and I'm pretty fucking pumped to finally get my hands on this game. From what I've heard and seen, things looked like they shaped up nicely.

Also on a side note: Thanks to Luke for flying down to San Francisco to do the final 1up Yours podcast. I just finished the beast of a podcast today
3 hrs 26 min
and I really enjoyed it. Definitely a classic. Thanks again.

He clearly didn't mean that - he was just trying to pimp Halo Wars and phrased his comments poorly. Seriously, cut him some slack.

On the flip side, these guys are traditionally PC RTS game developers. Some of them probably had never touched Halo before working on Halo Wars :-)

Speaking from experience working at a game development company that focused on PC games, there is/was a negative stigma attached to console shooters amongst PC enthusiast game developers.

I am well aware of the differences between a FPS and an RTS. I am not sure how you guys play halo but I don't play with only one weapon and one strategy at a time. Things are constantly changing depending on if the other team has a power weapon, if they are in a group, if they are offensive, if they are defensive. I just felt from the quote that he was short changing Halo 3. It really had nothing to do with how they would tailor their RTS to play. I just thought if they were making a Halo game be it an RTS or not they would have a better understanding of Halo 3's multiplayer.

My original post may have been a bit harsh I wasn't really trying to knock Halo Wars I just thought it was strange. I was going off Cocop's original excerpt and because I wasn't able to watch the Vidoc at the time and was just making an observation. You are right though it didn't sound nearly as bad in context.

No, thanks. I just got something infinitely better than any hug from you. Picked up the wifey from work a bit ago and she had a bag from Waldenbooks. I asked what was inside and she said it was a present that would make me bang her 50 times this weekend. She opened the bag and she was right! She IS getting banged 50 times this weekend cuz she got me the Art of Halo 3!! How cool is she?!

So then what is your complaint? Do you seriously want to change weapons for individual units?

It'll take a lot more than that to ruin a cutscene.

He meant in the sense that it's physically impossible to play with more than one weapon and one strategy at a time. You can't drive a warthog and a Scorpion simultaneously, you can't fire your fire your AR and BR simultaneously. In an RTS, you can have your troops doing all of these things simultaneously. What he said made perfect sense.

Oh sweet! The art on page 14 and page 88 really resonated with me, as two pieces that really display what I love about the fiction/universe, what really got me excited when I'm think about Halo 3 in the years leading up to release.

Good lady.

50 times over a weekend is quite a feat. Just open the art book up if you start having any trouble getting it up during those final few times.

Usually gifts to the wife have this effect (or not), not the other way around.

Yea dude I agree. It makes perfect sense in that regard. I wasn't in any way expecting to have an RTS play like a FPS or be able to switch unit weapons or something like that. I originally thought he was kind of discrediting the FPS experience by saying it lacked depth but after going through the vidoc once I got a chance and seeing the quote in context I understand what he was going for even though he worded it quite poorly.

About the comment: I'm pretty sure they are saying strategy to mean RTS they just dont repeat RTS over and over they call it a strategy, nowhere in there did they mean to belittle Halo's FPS strategy.

This is Ensemble ok? They know how to make an RTS. See Age of Myth: Titans for the almost perfect example of one.

One thing they mentioned is that of course it fell victim (IMO) to being one of these "new-age console RTS's" but whatever maybe it will be good. Economy these days has been taking a backseat to combat, its foreseen with this modern day every kid has fuckin ADD and cant sit still for five fucking minutes without seeing an explosion attention-span-starved society but whatever. Ensemble has had a few licks at this new type before they've probably learned what works and what doesn't and the game will have solid gameplay. Hopefully they'll even release a game balance patch after awhile to make it better. Although they say theres a lot of micromanagement in combat so that could be good IF true, if they aren't just saying those words to say them and actually mean them.

I don't think you need to be pessimistic about the game developer. Just look at what Bethesda did with Fallout 3 and people were extremely worried they would destroy Fallout's rich culture (post-apocalyptic world, humorous at times, with a dash of oldschool). And if Bethesda can pull it off I think we can breathe safely until we see the final product here ya know? Besides for me Halo 3's culture isn't what sells me and I don't think its what sells the millions of 15 year old kids playing, it just has good gameplay and its where the community is. Even still I feel Ensemble will portray Halo righteously so relax.

Too many people getting over-sensitive about a person's choice of words.

Vidoc was quite cool. Showcasing tons of gameplay is always good.

WTF, I found myself nodding along to a Juices post >.<

I loved the old Ensemble RTSs on PC, and I'll give the demo a fair shake. I'm more concerned about how the RTS plays on 360 than I am about how they treat the source material.

That is a ridiculous and uncalled-for accusation. In other news, Dax recently allowed me to take a peek at the Official Halo Wars Thread he's been working on since July, and I must say, BruceLeeRoy has some competition. 88 posts and counting! And the links to the Gamestop preorder page is a really nice touch.

In still unrelated news, Dax has recently let me in on his recent project, the two of us will be opening up a thread for it once the game is closer to release, but I had to give my HaloGAFers a head start on this shit.
Presenting: Halo Warsify your avatar!
I've made two for you all to preview:

It's now at 117 posts, and it is going to stay that way!

My daughter just called to let me know the coffin came back from MS today. New/repaired 360 to set up tonight.

Neato.

The video of Halo Wars didn't exactly excite me, but then I'm beyond video now and just waiting for the demo.

Not sure why people have an issue with this particular line. Is there some hidden innuendo I'm unaware of? Considering the character, what I've read about and seen him in the cinematics, it doesn't seem bizarre or strange that he or any other soldier in the UNSC would spout a line like that. Maybe there's something I'm missing about it... but it's a quirky, adolescent, standard-issue Marine comment -- something we've seen in every single Halo game since the beginning.

Please, by all means, elucidate.

Here's that Spartan-jacking part I was talking about where he jumps a hundred feet up into the air:

i found that halo wars scene to be pretty awful, mostly because of the later half. I found the elite voices to be straight up terrible and the open sesame was the icing on the cake. I'm not saying that it might not be "in character" for him to say that and if it is then my expectations are even lower because I found it to be very cheesy and something found in a bad action movie. Granted most cut scenes in games are like a bad action movie but thats a whole other topic.

Yeah the elites sounded like typical cartoon minions along with the boss (the arbiter). It was bad.

I was rolling my eyes through that entire trailer, but I just bust out laughing at "open sesame." Cheesier than the Brady Bunch, and nearly as dumb.
