So Rockstar today announced the first GTAIV expansion pack will feature a 12-20 hour campaign, new multiplayer modes, radio stations and DJs, new weapons and vehicles, refined mechanics, new locations and minigames and even new TV shows. It will cost $20.

Reminder that Bungie released a brown warehouse that you're supposed to make your own fun in and a brown oval of pre-existing assets for $10.

That's one of the things that really bugged me about that first map pack. I alsp hate the fact that people kept asking for an outdoor forge centric map after the release of Foundry. Griftball is amusing for a second or two, but that map is worthless.

Foundry has been somewhat of a disappointment but I think that's only because it's been very poorly integrated into MM. I had fun making maps and will always cherish Smalhalla but when Foundry was announced I expected to see tens of maps (either created by Bungie or by the community) in MM, that it would add a shit-ton of variety to Halo 3. Unfortunately the outcome was the complete opposite. Foundry shipped with a mediocre default setting and there's only been 3-4 custom maps in MM over the 10 or so months it's been out.

That said, I'm still pumped about seeing a outdoor foundry. I haven't given up hope that Bungie can take advantage of this map and perhaps succeed where they failed with Foundry. Sandbox has been done for months already so Bungie should have had time to play around in there and develop some kick as map variants to ship with the pack when it's released. There's no way Bungie could think Foundry was as big of a success as they hoped for (or their expectations were too low). Hopefully Sandbox has been designed to avoid the limitations they've discovered with Foundry.

I will be disappointed if Sandbox ships with only one default and will be even more disappointed if after it's been out for months there aren't a bunch of new map variants from Bungie or the community.

Believe.

Foundry has had some nicely made setups. But unfortunately some aren't never experimented with enough by guys like us or others. I've downloaded and played around a bit in tons of maps from Foundry that I had downloaded from ForgeHub. Some are MLG styles, but others can be played with for 4v4 Slayer and Skirmishes.

Most of the community won't ever know because they (the creations built) aren't published well enough.

To be fair, for the extra $10 you're spending you get a flaming warthog, a coaster and a few trading cards.

Wow. That hog is "flaming" alright.

Living in Europe, I fully expect to have to wait a week until the US release to get a hopper (not saying that this would right either, just expected), but it would be rather annoying to have to wait even longer (3-4 weeks plus!?) just to use the DLC in matchmaking.

I pm'd Urk and he said "... I can't imagine we won't support it day one."

Oh we played Smashed tonight

General Consensus: LOL

Bottom Line: We now know its called smashed because the creator was smashed when he made that shit.

Smashed is good. It looks like a 5 year old made it but it's fun.

i know this is not the halo wars thread, but there is a new vidoc about halo wars on the marketplace. lots of new gameplay and cutscene footage.

Well Tashi you are allowed to like it. Anyone else on HaloGAF and I would have replied like "OMG R U STUPID!?"

Also this comes from the dude who likes Heavies. Almost had to breakup with the people I was playing with because they vetoed Standoff Heavies, luckily to my surprise it vetoed to Avalanche Heavies :)

Wow. I now know why Ackerson wanted to dong on Master Chief so bad during the firing range exercise...

BTW, did that part in FoR where Master Chief flicked the scorpion missile aside remind you of that scene in Hancock where Will Smith did the same thing? I swear if there was a Halo movie that would have be to be in there.

Dang, I been away from this thread too long. Since PAX 2008 I believe. Good times, good times. Hey Dirtbag, hey EazyB, hey Galleon and all youse other guys. :D

I think Microsoft has gotten too greedy for it's own good with all this : "Buy a new game or a limited edition new game and get your maps". Plus the fact that current maps are not slated to be free. Curse you Microsoft and your greediness. Its milking the Halo cow's udders dry.
I do realize the maps will be dlc later on but still paying $10 for 3 maps is downright outrageous. I remember the Certain Affinity releasing Hang 'Em High and Derelict for only $5 for Halo 2. A far more reasonable price.

As the buyers we should send Microsoft a message by not buying the 2 games for the Maps. And not downloading their DLC maps (at least not until they drop in price) However I do realize this is a futile attempt, unless someone else wants to start a grassroots movement with me.

Just gotta randomly complement Halo 3 on the graphics. On Standoff, I couldn't shoot a guy because the sun was in my eyes :lol

Can we get some sunglasses or a visor for the next update? :)

In real life if the sun was in your eyes you would have the same problem. Can't move the sun :)

Maybe you can't but I can.

Hahaha, well yea cuz I know what I'm talking about. But what don't you like about it??

I've yet to play Smashed; what playlists is it in? It'd be interesting to know who made it and why it stuck out to Shiska over every other Foundry map made in the last year.

Someone uploaded the map to their fileshare, here's a link.

What's interesting is that when searching the Bnet community files for "Smashed" this is the only copy of it. The original author is "A Glacier" but Bnet has no record of that gamertag. Why/how would such an under promoted map catch Shiska's eyes?

I have no problem holding out until the maps hit XBLMP so I sure as hell am not going to buy the LE Halo Wars (probably just gamefly the game unless it gets spectacular reviews). That said, the moment the pack hit XBLMP I'mma eat that shit up. $10 is not a great value for 3 maps especially considering the Halo 3 disc cost $60 and came with 11 maps (let's say 3 packs and a freebie = $30 at current DLC prices) so that means we sorta paid $30 for an entire campaign along with the price of retail distribution, marketing, building an engine, and other things. Of course this simple kind of calculations are flawed but it's obvious the consumer is getting a much worse value for their dollar.

I have no problem paying $10 because I know I'll be playing these maps a hundred times over and forging the shit out of Sandbox.

MS should pay Rockstar to make some Halo maps. All the money MS has pumped into Bungie has resulted in a broken Lockout, a room of boxes, Destroyed Beauty (Texture Town), a huge ass map that no one plays, and the aforementioned brown oval. Standoff is probably the only good map that's been released post-launch.

Avalanche and Ghost Town say no.
I love both those maps (Standoff too, until it just wouldn't know when to take a break).

I'll give you Blackout because seriously Bungie, I've played (actually I'll check) 5, FIVE fucking matchmade games on Blackout.
NOT WHAT I FUCKING PAID FOR (wow Zeo, chill).
I realise playlists play a part but apart from 'Big Team Whichever' it should come up in it.

I'm not actually angry that this is the case, more disappionted.

I wasn't implying you confirmed there would be a playlist, just that personally you thought that (Bungie) ye would have a playlist up.
The first part of your message said you hadn't talk to ... Chad (Armstrong?), who I presumed would be involved in such matters.

There's a Halo Wars vidoc out; and I know I am being overly sensitive, but comments like this one do not make me like Ensemble or want to buy their game:

In the FPS game, you're good just using one single weapon and one single tactic. In OUR game, you actually have to employ multiple strategies on the screen at the same time.

His quote is essentially the opposite of Bungie's Halo franchise and probably the main reason why I love Bungie's Halo games so much. I won't hold it against him but it has to make you wonder how much of Halo this guy has actually played :lol

Damn. Nice job on this one.
Such a fantastic shot.
Not my shot, it's the work of Google Images "Halo 3 lighting" :P

Unless you're giving Bungie props, in which case I approve.

It doesn't have a watermark on it, so I figured it was one of yours. :D

Ding ding ding! Complaining about MS jerking us around with DLC maps is all well and good, but if we just turn around and buy them, it doesn't matter what we've said, we're just enabling.

I know that these maps aren't going to be in my regular playlists for a year after they're released, and I don't like the way they're being distributed. So rather than just whine about it, I'm going to whine about it and not buy the maps.

...And to be honest, I wish a lot more people would too.

im ok with the $10 for 3 new maps. because honestly i like the dlc playlists and i have most definitely gotten $10 worth from the legendary map pack. As someone who plays halo everyday/every other day this is not to much considering how much time i'm going to sink into these new maps

One guy? That was one of head guys at Ensemble - the lead writer, Graham Somers.

What he is saying is true. He obviously means you can only ever be doing one thing at a time in the FPS, but the entire point of RTS games is to manage everything at once. Don't be overly sensitive.

That said Halo Wars looks like ass. It's really hard for me to get excited about the combat when apparently "driving" is the warthog's special ability. Maybe they are just hiding the micromanagement and it'll secretly be incredibly in depth, but everything I've seen so far looks as hands on as an old school carrier rush.

Yeah, that's probably what he meant, but it came out poorly.

He should have just said "In the FPS, you control one character and can only do one thing at a time. In an RTS you control multiple characters each with their own strengths and weaknesses."

The video looked nice though.

Haven't played campaign in a long time and my memory on the story is a bit fuzzy...but is that the Maw in that last pic?
All of those pictures are from the final level, which has - at the end of it - a remake of the Maw run. The ship at the end is called the Forward Unto Dawn, if that's what you were asking.

Are you making some kind of cut on each copy of Halo Wars sold? I personally think it is kind of messed up that they are making a Halo RTS multiplayer when apparently they have little knowledge of what makes the Halo FPS multiplayer great.

I don't see the hurt feelings over the comments. First of all, I am sure there are individuals on the team that will incorporate some things familiar to us Halo-dorks but I imagine they are trying to actually make a decent rts game. I don't see what they could really use from the Halo FPS mp experience. The matchmaking is bungie's doing. The game will use the lore, which is all we can really expect from them. It is a completely different genre, and yes they are tying in some halo 3 maps. The addition of these three maps may seem like a copout to sell more copies of the game, which I am sure it will do, but just take a look at crackdown. Everyone thought that tying the halo 3 beta to crackdown degraded crackdown's credibility, but it is now known as one of the biggest sleeper hits in recent memory. I'm not saying that feeling betrayed by the comments is wrong, and I think it is an incredibly stupid move to make those comments when you have as devout a following as halo. But this is a different game in a different genre. It is tied by lore and lore alone.

Just my $.02

I just watched the vidoc on my 360 and it looks good; the environments look amazing. There was still some wonky stuff, though, like a Spartan leaping about a hundred feet in the air to jack a flying vehicle. And it looked like some UNSC vehicles (maybe Gauss 'hogs?) were firing purple plasma or something.

Since when is Halo Wars an FPS? I knew all you "Gaf Halo Elite" members would bash Halo Wars every chance you get.

Ok, a lot of this Halo Wars hate is really annoying, I know most of it is from the maps or they don't believe it will catch the real feel of Halo. I've kept my mouth shut about the game, and will let the demo decide if I will like it or not (which I suggest a lot of you do). Plus you guys are taking that comment in the video out of proportion by far, it is a RTS or real time STRATEGY, so it does require more strategy than a regular FPS, but that does not mean Halo doesn't have any strategy at all, in fact it has a lot more than all of the other FPS's out there. So can't we just hold our judgment of the game until the demo so people can play it. Ensemble is a great studio (to bad they will be no more), so everyone gather around, and wait to criticize or celebrate the game.

Now to retreat back to my own area.
