Good find, TDG. It really looks like a good map.
The RvB bags are awesome. Mine says "This bag does not accept random friend requests" on one side, and "Bag #1,856,298 of 7,959,259 - Collect them all!" on the other. (Made up numbers, but you get the idea.)

And yeah, that was the best Assembly video so far. The areas with the cylinders coming up from the ground - the designer called them the pinball bumpers - make for a very interesting combat space. They make for a short cut to the center platform, and also create a lot of cover down below. Many games of cat and mouse down there, dodging and weaving. It was one of my favorite parts of the map.

Like BlueBur has already stated, Assembly = Derelict + Midship.

Only difference here is that there are no walls on the back end of the map, so you can accidently jump off and also grenades can pretty much go wasted if not thrown properly.

ScrewAttack called the new map a remake of Midship in "Hard News"... they are going to piss off a lot of people.

I think after playing Assembly, its pretty safe to say we aren't going to see midship again in Halo 3. While I agree this is definitely a new map with a play experience unique to that offered up by midship, I just can't see us getting the remake now. I think it's time some of you guys go ahead and make your peace with it - and don't take it out on Assembly, because its pretty damn slick.

Back home.

I know you guys haven't been able to sleep for a while, tossing and turning, wondering what EazyB thought of PAX. Well here ya go.

As much as I loved PAX being so close to home, the Seattle Convention Center was way too small. tens of thousands of nerds packed indoors is anything but pleasant. I know this will come off as elitist but fuck it, at times I felt embarrassed just being around these people, scum of the gaming community. Anyways, enough of that.

Bungie Booth:
This made PAX for me. I can't overstate how amazing the turnout was in the booth. There were tons of Bungie employees there at all times. I'm ashamed to say it but I've never really kept up with the who's who at Bungie but that said, I was able to spot out 3-4 guys I simply remembered from vidocs and other appearances. Luckily I was with more knowledgeable people (Voc, Cocop, Wu, Ghaleon) who would spot out these Bungie superstars and give me a quick description of what they're responsible for. Again, tons of employees there interacting with the fans, amazing. I realize that Seattle is damn close to Kirkland where they probably live and work, but I give all those who wadded through the sea of mouth-breathers much kudos. Most other company booths seemed to only have a few PR people spouting about when and where I'd be able to buy the game and how I couldn't live without the game.

Assemble:
I'll say this right off the bat; I'm no fan of arena style maps. To this day I have nightmares about running around Midship with a plasma rifle and plasma grenades waiting to get brutally slaughtered by the sword. So here comes a midship-esque covenant arena map. I enjoyed it. It's too bad most of my matches were 10 player FFA with AR starts but during the recon challenges the player count shrunk down to a more manageable 6, and if I'm not mistaken I started with a BR once.

Here's what makes it different then midship (warning: these may be reasons why some loved midship):
It's larger. I can't say approximately how large it was in comparison but with the slower moving speed, a sizably larger area, more cover; the map played very differently. The intricacy of the layout, floors, and cover made it a challenging but rewarding map to just jump around on. I love reaching a familiarity with a level where I can be in a shootout, running backwards, and jump around to get the advantage. If you somehow followed that, know that I think this level will be perfect for that. Even with all the extra ledges and pieces of cover on map which allow for engaging movement, it shouldn't hurt the gameplay much if at all. The surfaces are all smooth and from what I could tell there aren't any extraneous things to catch a nade on.

The line of sight on the map isn't as open as midship was because Purple Reign has more cover and places to slip away. I know people this leads to more intimate encounters which I prefer over being raped by 4 people BRing me from 4 angles. I know other like that though but not all hope is lost, the top floor is pretty sparse so while it gives the player the advantage of elevation, a coordinated team could easily team BR the player.

Visually: outstanding, noting like it in the game so far so that's nice. I'm a huge fan of skyboxes so I'm personally very pleased with the level in that sense. Won't delve much further as there are screens and vids on the intertubes.

I didn't take as much pics as I'd have liked but for those that did, feel free to post any with me in it. I'm tanned, ripped, and outrageously handsome; I have nothing to fear.

Meeting GAFers:
Weird as fuck. Not the GAFers
at least not most of them
, but putting faces to the handles was crazy. The way I see this thread or play online will never be the same. It was nice because being at PAX alone would easily be the most dreadful experience imaginable.

It's a shame you had to leave early. Although the tourney didn't pan out as well as we'd have liked, you missed out on some unmentionably awesome times. You deserved to be there.
Mad props for stealing Ram's pass though.

Midship was my favorite map from Halo 2 but I actually don't want to see it remade anymore. There are so many little details that made midship what it was that they couldn't and wouldn't be recreated in Halo 3. So I'm fine with no remake and hopefully I'll like Assembly because it looks awesome.

LOL I am back home all my shit completely unpacked and only have my PAX pass you bastard :P that was a shitty deal though what did he do?

While standing in the registration line to rebuy a pass some guy said he had a extra one he was giving away. Of course Ram jumped at the opportunity. The guy with the pass said, "If you want it, you have to dance for it."

And that fucker danced.

That's a nice quality video, much better than the rest of them.

I'm trying to find anything different in the 1.2 build. Kind of looks like the grenades have less bounce and are stronger, and the equipment deploys faster... then again, I think I'm just seeing what I want to see.

I suppose it is possible that at some point the night before I ditched or dropped mine then just grabbed one laying around in the morning. Either way it is very good news that he didn't have to buy a new one. With all that water he was drinking I am sure he had no problems busting a move :P

I'm back from my quick trip to Ohio. Nice pics and stories to those who posted them.
Even if I wasn't at PAX, quite insane to put some faces to gamer tags.

Anyways I'll go play some Mercs 2, did anyone buy this game?

Some more photos and stories to go with.

Princess Peach-man. this was in line the first day waiting to be let in. I think it speaks for itself.

100_3692Small.jpg

Yeah, I'm sure you are... now suck it whore! :lol

100_3701Small.jpg

The Mega 64 guys had some sort of roulette wheel that had different things on it, it landed on name that tune... needless to say I could not make out a word they were singing.

100_3728Small.jpg

One of the 1UP guys, not agreat photo but one of the few that i have since Blueblur forbade me from taking photos at the Gameworks meetup. Needles to say I got bored and left within 15 mins from Gameworks. I'm not a listener of 1UP, but I should begin eventually. Strangely enough I saw Luke waiting outside for someone when I left.

100_3738Small.jpg

Luke the Terminator, huddled by other Bungie employees.

100_3746Small.jpg

Luke in a very... interesting pose.

100_3792Small.jpg

The 1UP panel was lit horribly.

100_3796Small.jpg

Adam Sessler's bald spot, from G4's X-PLAY. He was at the 1UP panel apparently, but I was up against a wall asleep at the time so this was the one shot 1 got him. I did a double take when I first saw him, so I hesitated and got this late photo fo him going down the escalator.

100_3847Small.jpg

The Neogaf Pax pilgrimage. :lol
This was right after the breakfast we all had together. Seattle is a very 'rampy' town. The descent is easy, the climb, nearly killed me.

100_3854Small.jpg

Half eaten sandwich next a Ferrari, right next to Bungie's booth. Strangely enough it disappeared like 15 mins later of waiting in line... This was taken while waiting in line to get the artists signatures and prints. Claude from HBO was right behind us. Should probably taken more pictures of him. i only got a couple.

100_3864Small.jpg

Photo of the kid with the home made armor next to a very weird looking Cortana.

100_3922Small.jpg

A quick shot I took of a better looking Cortana.

100_3978Small.jpg

The Space Needle, who goes to Seattle and doesn't visit this? Since i figured I'd never be back at Seattle I went.

100_4082Small.jpg

On the last day, right before checking out of the Sheraton hotel I spotted this kid... maybe he's got a death wish?

100_4145Small.jpg

Author of Contact Harvest, Joseph. I should have gotten a front shot but I was so engaged in talking to him, my mind went blank. He's a nice guy.

Damn. I really wish I could've gone to PAX. It looks like the convention I go to every year, except more game focused, which frakkin' rules. I dunno how busy i'll be next summer, but I should probably think about making plans now if I wanna go :P

Having just had a pretty deep Halo script and gameplay discussion with Deepblue, we wanted to share our thoughts. Since he can't, I will.

First some facts. Joe Staten wrote the script for Halo 2 but only performed a rewrite of Halo 3's script near the end of the project. (Joe told me himself.) This is why the plot and scripts of Halo 2 and Halo 3 are so different.

Blue and I (reads oddly, no? :D ) agree that the story isn't there in Halo 3. The script only serves one purpose: to move the player from level to level. It also has problems with taking itself too seriously and that detracts from the experience. Halo 2 had many moments where the script was amusing and the characters were very much in character. Example: Sergeant Johnson's lines right before Metropolis:

SGT. JOHNSON:

Then listen up! The Chief is gonna jump in this tank, roll across the bridge, and blow up any inhuman son-of-a-bitch dumb enough to get between him and the Prophet of Regret! Pull yourself together, 'cause you're goin with him!

And of course...

Oh, I know what the ladies like.

Instead, Halo 3 takes itself too seriously. The game takes control away from the player often to tell the story via cutscenes and even then its always about being huddled to the next area to do the next thing. The one revelation that occurs, the Ark, is short-lived because right after its activated you run through the Floodgate stage (15 minutes tops) and go through the portal to immediately rush to the next area.

And the game itself is too restricting. Halo 3's campaign is noticeably a very controlled experience for the most part. Unlike in the previous games, the levels are engineered to push the player down a designated path with very little wiggle room. For me, this really hurts the campaign mode's replayablity. With Halo 3 I feel as if I'm playing the levels almost exactly the same way each time aside from vehicle sections where I have a choice of vehicles to use. You just can't no roam a stage like in Halo or The Silent Cartographer and play it differently every time. Even Halo 2's Delta Halo was explorable by escaping the main level areas.

And here's the other controlled part. Halo 3 more so than the previous two, really restricts the player. As a player, I want to be able to reach a spot if I can see and if it appears to be reachable. While it makes tons of sense for multiplayer maps, it doesn't for campaign. You can't have experiences in this game like you can in Halo 1. And being 7 years later, why has Bungie taken two steps forward and then three steps back in that regard?

Obviously, this the way things are. These are just our observations and opinions. Honestly, I think Bungie has done their best work when they just work work work and push it out the door. I know that's not always best (BXR, anyone?) but its an approach I favor.

Halo 3's campaign feels like it was focus tested immensely and its really lacking. It feels dumbed down to the lowest common denominator and complaints many vocal players had (like playing as the Arbiter) were addressed when they necessarily shouldn't have been. The artists did a great job and some of the missions are fantastic thanks to people like Dan Miller. But they still are a little short of amazing, sadly.

We wanted to post these thoughts to put it out there and possibly get some Bungie folks' attention. This discussion may not be new but we started talking about it as we were speculating on how great Bungie's new games will be and as to what will Joseph write. We're really interested in them really making their next games huge sandboxes like some classic Halo levels were.

Eazy looked like he could bench press both of us, then vault off Claude and land on voc's bald head without breaking a sweat. I respect that.

Yeah, it was pretty damn awesome.

The Bungie guys were out on their free weekend, amid throngs of RECON-hungry fans doing all sorts of things, from managing the queue to chit-chatting with the fans. It's a continuing testament to their fundamental understanding of what powers their success beyond quality design and execution - And that is fan interaction. You can tell that it isn't simply a tag line at the end of their teasers. Bungie loves their fans and their fans definitely love Bungie.

Dan Miller's "Assembly" was bad ass to the bone. I don't know all the hands that were involved in this gem, but I've played it enough to feel confident in naming it my favorite midsize map of Halo 3 so far, a mantle that was held by Halo 2's Sanctuary to give you some idea of how I enjoyed it. It's an extremely complex map and I hope I do it some justice in an article I wrote on the way back to Orlando earlier this morning.

Also, wow! Meeting you guys in person was nothing short of awesome. Some of you guys I only knew on a sidebar basis, but now, I definitely feel like we'll be playing on Live a helluva lot more. Others I didn't get to hang out with as much as I wanted to, but hopefully we'll get a chance to meet up again next year or something.
