Let's be honest though; Halo 3's ranking system is one of the best ones out there right now. Seriously, it is. Maybe it's not good for making people feel good about themselves, but it does a fairly decent job of getting people into competetive matches. I don't like the frustration that comes with the Halo 3 ranking system, but playing Halo 3's matchmaking is a hell of a lot better than Gears of War, where you have no rank and simply dive into random games and hope for the best (and end up playing on uneven team 3/4 of the time), and it's a lot better than COD4, where the ranking system pats you on the butt and makes you feel special, but ultimately does little to provide competetive matches and balanced teams.
The ranking sytem, maybe, but I really, truly, honestly do not get the matchmaking system. Halo 3 is probably my favorite game of this gen so far, and my friend and I meet up pretty much weekly to have fun, catch up, and shoot shit.
We're both Majors, and last week, for instance, we had a Recruit and, like a Commander or something (both of whom quit after we started losing) on our team against a party of Generals and Colonels, all of whom had
much higher "experience points" than any of us. So we proceed to get slaughtered to the point where it wasn't even that fun to try and hold our own (and get called "fags" and "losers" at the end, even after saying a polite "good game").
We do very well when matched against similar rank/experience levels, but all too often we go against
much higher-ranked foes. I don't care at all about my rank, I just want to be in competitive and fun matches in which I'm not completely outmatched by some MLG wannabe who plays 80 hours a week.
To be fair, I've also been in matches in which I was the highest ranked, but the difference spread never seems to be as vast in those cases.
And I know it's a common complaint, but I really don't get why my Skill level goes down after so readily after a loss, even if I carry the team and play really well but we still lose by a little bit, but moving it in the other direction is a Sisyphean effort.
*whew* Sorry for getting carried away there. /Rant off
