If you haven't read this novel, I'd recommend doing so for two reasons:

1) It's written directly by a Bungie employee who not only has access to the story bible, but is one of the main contributors.

2) It has incredible insight into the culture of the Covenant.

Truth didn't believe in the Great Journey.
 
Christ tonight was crazy...not entirely Halo related but I thought I'd share it.

So a few friends of my came over for bbq and watching some fireworks. As we are playing some Halo Co-op we see/hear one of my neighbors FLIPPING THE FUCK OUT on one of my other retarded low-life neighbor. I mean he was screaming so loud it was insane... it was him against a bunch of idiotic drunk teenagers. So I was trying to figure out what went down and as he's yelling we find out the kids blew a fucking hole in their garage door with a rocket. So we run out and try and break things up but it wasn't working too well. Needless to say the cops arrived soon after and it was a mess..

This is why I hate this day.

Anyway were finally in the double digits in kills left!

Truth absolutely believed in the Great Journey, despite of the Harvest's reliquary results indicating that humanity was the rightful heir to the Forerunner throne. In fact, his behavior throughout the novel and into the trilogy show him becoming even more decidedly certain of the Great Journey every step of the way - until his bitter end at the hands of the Arbiter. Either things happened at some point in Truth's life, changing his perspective on the Covenant's role (which have yet to be revealed to us) or he simply sucked it up and began to reinterpret the religion in the favor of the Covenant, and more specifically, himself.
 
Perhaps he went ahead and attempted to fire the rings because of full-blown insanity.

Although it's certainly possible he could have interpreted death by the rings as merely death of the body, his spirit or whatever could then ascend to wherever he thought the Forerunners now resided. Maybe he truly knew the stakes of an activation until he saw the Ark, perhaps persuaded by the sheer grandness and elaborate nature of it all. He could have convinced himself all of it was for the purpose of the Journey, instead of a mere hiding place.

Well, the Great Journey was a real event for the Forerunners.

Didact, after firing the Array:
Mendicant Bias is trying to prevent us from firing the Array. He speeds back to the Ark, but he won't succeed. Offensive Bias will stop him, and I will burn this stinking menace in your name. And then? I will begin our Great Journey without you, carrying this bitter record. Those who came after will know what we bought with this [false transcendence]--what you bought, and the price you paid.

What it was exactly, no one knows - apart from now being referenced as a "false transcendence." The Covenant correctly saw that the firing of the Array operated in tandem with the initiation of the Great Journey, but it is doubtful that they really knew what the Great Journey was - only that a greater sentient species had discovered a way to save themselves from certain peril. The reality according to the terminals, of course, is that very few Forerunners survived. The ones who did weren't exactly shouting praises of joy. For the most part, it is believed that the Great Journey was an unbearable and horrifying process in the wake of the galaxy's biological reset button being pressed. Didact, in the above quote, doesn't seem to psyched about the whole thing, being that he had just murdered multiplied trillions of souls.

So it wasn't so much that Truth was wrong about the Journey or about how to get it kick-started, but rather, what it truly was. He obviously would not have become a god, but beyond that, we have no idea what would have taken place since the Master Chief ended the Array launch early.
 
During the events of Contact Harvest the rings were still a myth and Truth had every right in the world to be doubtful. Even with all this Forerunner technology at their hands and even a spaceship with a sentient AI onboard, the seven rings and the Great Journey were a myth that some higher ups like Truth probably didn't believe in due to a lack of evidence.

Until they found Installation 04 that is.

That's the point where everything changed. The Great Journey was real and it was the perfect way to hide the lie that their whole religion was based upon.

I would have prefered if he hadn't become such a zealot in Halo 3. He's worse than Regret at that point, maybe because he wants to cover up humanity's part in the whole story very quickly. Too bad he didn't know what the Great Journey really was. If Spark had explained it too him like he did to Tartarus he probably would've stopped.

But if something happened to change Truth's mind, then would the same thing had to have happened to Regret and Mercy as well?

Wouldn't it be ironic if activating the rings didn't kill everything not flood, but took them somewhere else? And all the talk about the Array killing everyone was just a measure against the gravemind finding out.

Ironic, yes. But don't forget that Cortana herself go _into_ the first halo array's systems and point-blank tell Chief that it was a destroyer, not a teleporter.

Unless the forerunner higher ups were lieing to everyone, and we're taking the evidence of the once-fired rings, records of Offensive and Mendicant, etc, etc......

And just for the record, I know you're joking.

So....97 million?

Wow, if you go to Bungie.net, they found out the Bungie logo twitches every 49 seconds (7x7) and says 'Tru7h' someone was able to click on it, and this showed up.

I couldn't do it either. And I was timing myself, refreshing at 11 seconds after and timing my clicks to the top of the minute. :lol
