And for those who are curious about the Podtacular tournament, it looks like they don't have anything ready. I wouldn't be surprised if this thing doesn't go down.

That sucks. I'm still putting my Sunday on hold though, just in case...

Is there a way to get the total kill count for the online games? Or would that break the internet? It must be much higher than the UNSC count.

Speaking of Podtacular, which I haven't listened to in a long time... I have to say, I hate the video podcasts. The audio quality is bad, it defeats the purpose of a podcast really, and... well, overall I just don't like it. The old podtacular audio podcasts were great.

Yeah I stopped listening to Podtacular awhile ago. It's pretty stupid. We have better discussions in this thread. It's like the guys who host it don't play halo or something. Or the reader stories they would do on the air were like: "I was driving in the warthog and I splattered a guy on my way to the flag, it was awesome." I remember listening to them at work thinking "why the hell am I listening to this?"

I didn't know what Bungie Day was so I Googled it and happened upon an article from IGN. An excerpt regarding last year's Bungie Day:

As an added gift, Bungie will also make the Blastacular Map Pack for Halo 2 free to download for everyone. This falls in line with previous map packs which at first cost money and were then given away to the entire community. However, the update hinted Halo 3 map packs may not follow this precedent and they may never go free. Within the next few weeks, Bungie has also said it will incorporate the Blastacular maps into matchmaking.

I got the Heroic map pack for free so if I'm to follow this "precedent", I'll be getting the Legendary map pack for free sooner or later :)

It's really a shame that these maps weren't included when the game launched or released for free because honestly those three maps are my favorite in the game. The amount of detail and polish that went into these are above the rest, not to mention they are awesome to play on. I know a lot of people who gave up on H3 because of maps like Isolation and Epitaph and I think if they just got the chance to play Avalanche or Ghost Town their minds would change.

Okay, so prepare for a post covering multiple topics...

Okay, first, Snowbound. I was playing Team Slayer earlier and every fucking time this map came up it got vetoed. Jesus fucking Christ what the hell is with all the hate for Snowbound? I don't understand it, it's a good slayer map that is extremely beautiful (I love the planets in the background). Every time I hear someone complain about Snowbound it's because of the shot-gun place. Sure, that area where the shot-gun is can sometimes be very deterministic of the outcome of the battle, but it's no fucking worse than hogging the rockets on The Pit, or hogging the sword on Construct, or staying in once place with the sword of Blackout, etc. Snowbound is a fucking awesome map and it's a shame that I don't have the chance to play it regularly in matchmaking. Fuck the haters.

My second topic concerns more of my social life on XBL than anything. You see, all of my friends (those that I know in real life) regularly played Halo 2. Every time I got on, I would always see one of them playing the game. This isn't so for Halo 3. Yes, almost all of them got it the first day it was released, yes all of them played it for a couple of months, but none of them play it anymore. Well, except for one. I just don't fucking understand it. Halo 3 is BETTER than Halo 2 in EVERY conceivable way except for the maps, though, that can be argued. Now nearly all of them, again, except for the one who actually still plays, says Halo 3 sucks, and I have no fucking idea how they can say that when they enjoyed Halo 2 so fucking much. Take into account that these are the type of kids that say it takes "skill" to use button glitches like BXR and BXB, think that every Halo game should start you off with BRs, hate the melee system in Halo 3 because it isn't Halo 2's even though it is more fair, and think Bungie ruined Lockout in the form of Blackout. I don't understand; I guess they were just never really fans of Halo's TRUE gameplay in the first place. It makes me sick.

As for that goddamn tree in Standoff... What the fuck is this tree's problem?
28k4w9c.jpg

It isn't like the fucking trees in Isolation which aren't DIFFICULT to climb and make for interesting gameplay. Why the fuck would you have a tree if a player can't climb it?

w1330i.jpg

Look at it, it's as if it were teasing me. It's saying, "Haha, Dax. What's the matter? You can't climb me? Am I too hard for you? I'm so sorry."

24lkkeo.jpg

I mean, it has a FUCKING BOULDER RIGHT NEXT TO IT. It's just asking to be climbed. But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. It has to be fucking difficult. Goddamn tree.

Now for something not so filled with hate: I love driving around on the outskirts of Sandtrap. Every week, about once a week, I load up a game of Sandtrap and just drive around for a couple of minutes. It's so much fun.

The three pictures helped drive the point home. Repetition is the key to drive the point home. If you're going to drive something home, possibly a point, you want to use repetition.

You try climbing that goddamn tree. And, yes, you may subscribe.

:lol :lol

Dax it's used for aesthetics and cover, not climbing.

From what I've seen, the map designers build the core geometry out of nondescript shapes, evaluating things like elevation and sight lines. When that's locked down, the artists turn that geometry into something a bit more pretty. In this case, the cover on the ridge was turned into a rock and a tree, fitting for the setting. I'm guessing we are prevented from climbing the tree because that would provide a sight line - or hiding place - that was detrimental to the intended map balance.

The problem with the shotgun area as opposed to the sword area, or the rocket area is both those areas can't be easily camped at all, there is a long line of sight right down the rocket area in the pit, and the sword area can be attacked from 3 ways, you have no chance in any of those areas against a half-decent player.

Whereas, with the shotgun area of Snowbound, it's totally different. Players not only have access to the whole underground area of the map without having to go into a long line of sight, at any time they can run from an enemy, hide behind a shield door, pull out the shotgun and wait for their shield to recharge.

When you have one person camping down there, this essentially breaks the whole map. Everyone knows they are down there, and they don't bother with fighting in the upper area anymore, as they know there are people to kill below. If the shotgun guy does get killed, someone else just picks up the shotgun and uses exactly the same tactics.

This, to me, isn't what Halo is about.

Edit: If you like tree climbing may I suggest High Ground or Isolation? :D

After ranking up in Halo 3, I vividly remember playing Snowbound and wondering where the hell everyone was. I was running around outside for the most part of the entire game only to learn that everyone was either inside and/or in the underground compartments.

I guess everyone hates that aspect of the game.

Dammit man, we are not here to discuss our feelings for one another! The tree must be climbed!

The main reason for this is because you could hide in the tree with a spartan laser and lay wreckage to all vehicals and since there is no sniper on that map it would be hard to get him out of there. This is not fun for everyone else.

But the shot gun place has multiple entrances you can take advantage of. You just have to be careful when you have a person using the shot-gun.

Fuck that shit. They put in a tree, and it MUST be climbed!

But it the tree is so fucking hard to climb. Even when if do get the spartan laser and get over to the tree, 95% of the time I die trying to get in it.

WHenever I play the map, there are plenty of people both inside and out.

Yes, but then they just go behind one of the other shield doors and camp there.

I can be careful, but tell that to everyone else on my team/loan wolves. They don't care about k/d ratios, and for me to get any kills myself I have to go down to that bloody area. It's a vicious cycle!

Is was just thinking that. I mean, here's a kid who is simply crazy about Halo and wants to share his every thought about the game. You can't hold that against someone. And if he posts a little bit more than your average gafer and replies to every single post, so be it, at least his posts are worthwhile.

The only thing I don't like is the avatar. Seeing it too much makes me angry. I want to hit the girl in the face. I'm a classy gent too, so I don't even hit girls. She's the exception.

Other than that, he's a fine young man.

Yeah, Dax is a good guy. Let's all be friends.

But yeah, there's something annoying about that girl in his avatar. I want to drown her.

Okay, here are my heat maps for snowbound:

hw0js0.jpg

As you can see, for me at least, I get way more kills than I do deaths in Snowbound in the shot-gun area, though, it is the hottest spot for both heat maps. When playing TS or LW, usually the guy with the shot-gun is just too busy with someone else to keep it for long, giving you the opportunity to swing in for the kill. If the guy gets behind a shield door, let him go, back up, whatever, just don't be greedy. Snowbound is not a map where you can be greedy with your kills.

I did. And I think he did too. Cause he did. So We did just go there. Now that we're here I'm sure others will join us.

Come one. Come all. TDG and I have excellent party favors (Like Cake!).

Jealous. That's it, it must be jealousy. I know you don't have a girl like Sophie in your avatar. It's okay, though.

Those heatmaps show exactly what's wrong with the map, the whole upper area isn't being used because everyone is below ground.

The vast majority of your kills and deaths are coming from either near the big shield door in the middle, or the two pathways to the bases. No one is even playing up top.

Yeah, Snowbound is a great example of a map with wasted space. All of the good weapons are underground, or right next to the shield doors, so other than grabbing overshield, there's really no reason to go up top. I can't remember the last time I had fun on Snowbound. It's either camping in the tunnels, or fighting campers. Ugh. And Snowbound HC sucks too.

The upper area is being used just fine. I get enough kills on the upper level of the map.

The vast majority of your kills and deaths are coming from either near the big shield door in the middle, or the two pathways to the bases. No one is even playing up top.
The vast majority of my kills on Blackout are near the BR spawn on the opposing tower to the snipe spawn, and the snipe spawn. Does that mean that the map is broken because I don't get nearly as many kills/deaths in the middle, or near the red lift? No.
