Halo 2 was no joke. I wanna replay campaign again. Maybe I will.

Also, I just the had the most epic star studded night of MLG matchmaking. Actually it could have been a lot more epic if we actually won a game but...anyway, 3v3 CTF Pit against SK, Clutch and Heinz. We got raped but it wasn't all that bad. I've had worse beatings. Then we get a 4th and we get matched against the whole Str8 Rippin team. It was sick. We played Narrows Slayer and got raped pretty hard. We go right into matchmaking again and get matched up with them again but this time it was CTF Pit. It was also epic, and an epic ass kicking too. Lol, A lot of fun though. Then we get matched against a midtier pro and some semi pros I believe. Raped on Onslaught CTF. Then we got matched against Walshy and Strongside and 2 of their buds. I don't think they were Shockwave and Defy though. Another awesome match though, we did get our ass kicked. Also, Walshy is so god damn sneaky. Then we played against some other guys twice, one guy had recon, didn't recognize him though. He probably won it at Pax or some shit. This was one of the most fun MLG nights I've had in a while. I just wish I had full team on and also I had people sleeping in my house(4-5 AM) and so I had to whisper the callouts, really annoying. A lot of fun though. Str8 Rippin is so sick, I've never been spawn killed on Pit so quickly like it did tonight. Lol, funny stuff.

edit: lost like 7/8 matches and I still didn't lose my 50...so weird.

So I'm currently re-watching a lot of the cutscenes from Halo 2 and there's a couple things I want to discuss.

a) The way the story is told through the cutscenes are really well done. I know there's some here who prefer to have their story told strictly in-game, but I enjoy a rather cinematic approach to ALL plots to the story (be it a minor progress or a major plot twist/death of someone) and I'm not talking graphics wise.
Halo 2's story was definitely the best of the three and it was mainly because of it that I was so excited for Halo 3. This is probably my favorite cutscene.

If ODST's story doesn't match, or come close to, Halo 2's story, I'd be willing to call Halo 2's story a fluke.

Mini-Mythisode 1: Killing Elephant Driver. Didn't know all of those had no effect on the Elephant driver.

Awesome dude. Are you gonna put up any vids on Youtube?

Elamite definitely got his revenge. He got 18 kills on the narrows slayer game. Hahaha

Yea I'm gonna capture them in a few minutes and throw them up on youtube.

with XBL down (didn't know you couldn't forge Sandbox without XBL) i decided to play Halo 2 using the full paths (no speedrunning shortcuts) and watched all the cutscenes in order to scout locations for my next forge project - i had forgotten how fantastic that game is when you take it all in, 'sunday drive' style

i know i have before mentioned it as a possibility, but i finally settled on the crashed Sentinal Factory in Quarantine Zone as the design inspiration for a symmetrical map - i was delighted to find that the area has a similar look and is structured almost exactly the same as the Crypt

i also noticed some major z-fighting on one of the walls :lol i took that as a sign from the Halo gods

I don't know, man. I don't think anything can replace the epicness of the story and enviroment I felt when I first played (and still when I play today) Halo CE. The story in Halo 2 was good, but I didn't really like the gameplay in it. I dunno, Halo CE just appeals to me more.

I had no clue that the elephant driver was so immune to all those weapons/vehicles. That's good to know.

What's with the lack of posts in this thread? We're averaging like 8 posts a day.

So a little update: I've been playing a ton of SWAT lately and I got my brother up to a 47 on his new account. That's right, I leveled him up 46 times. And how many times did I go up in this same amount of time? 3. Yes, 3, even after finishing positive in nearly every game that we played. Oh well, Truskill sucks etc etc. I don't even care anymore.

Going for his 50 later today.

Getting a 50 in SWAT should auto-ban you from Xbox Live because you have to dress up like a dinosaur to do so and dinosaurs are the WORST.

You're in the new MLG top 10 (first part of an overkill, but still).

Writer for Halo 2 was Joseph Staten. Since he's working on ODST, here's hoping he wrote it.

That explains a lot. I've stuck a guy once while he was driving the elephant and it stuck blew up on him and he didn't die!

Now I know not to waste my rockets on the elephant driver. :lol

For those who want to see me get out classed...http://www.youtube.com/tashi0106

I kind of wish I didn't know who they were before the match started. The whole party changed and I felt myself playing a little differently than I usually do. Oh well. Good games, lots of fun.

Want to help get my bro to a 50 later today in SWAT? I just saw that you signed off when I was just getting on.

Staten writes some great stuff. Harvest was a great book. Although I am anticipating the gameplay more than the story for ODST this time around, I hope the story is on par with the other games in the series.

Haha, yea. The Halo 3 thread is the only thread I read/post in. I don't even go to the forum index to look at other threads. I dunno, I just feel comfortable here. Other threads don't seem as... friendly.

I only visit 2 threads in GAF. Halo3 and now the ODST thread.

I guess I need to go and expand my horizons out there some more but I seriously don't play any other games outside of Halo. LOL :lol

OT has some nice moments, and you are looking forward to more games than just ODST this year, right? There's a whole GAF out there, start exploring.

@Storm: I'm just hoping ODST isn't the disaster Halo 3 was in terms of story (aside form the Terminals).

My understanding is, the ODST team is pretty small, with Staten heading up the writing on the game, and it was built out very quickly. Whereas Halo 3's writing team was larger and involved several changes over time. I remember an interview with either Staten or Frank where they mentioned Halo 3 was written a couple of times, with the final rewrite happing a ways into production.

I think Halo 3's story suffered for that lack of focus in development. All signs seem to point to the opposite being the case here. So I'm hoping for a return to the story telling quality in Halo 2. Which to me is a pretty high bar, but the opening cinematic parked it pretty close to that level.

Except ODST's opening looks good, isn't overly complicated, and would have to be 5 minutes longer to fall into Halo 2's trapping. Felt more like CE to me, nice, short, sweet.

Keep non-interactive cutscenes away from my open-world games. Thanks.

Halo 2's was pretty long. And there were some long ones elsewhere in the game. But it was setting up a much more ambitious story: think about how much the game opened up everything we know about he Covenant now. It's easy to take so much of it for granted, but when Halo 2 landed, I was mesmerized by what we were seeing, stuff previously confined to the books. The sheer number of new characters and story elements that had to be established from scratch made it hard to avoid a few long scenes.

We've done this dance before, but for the heck of it: I don't really have any rigid rules I have for story telling in games. I'd rather the developers adapt their methods to the story being told. The only thing I don't want is a story told entirely from first person, ala Bioshock and Half-Life 2, as I find that to be excruciatingly - and unnecessarily - limiting.

Quite honestly, no I'm not really excited about any other games out there for the rest of the year. Kinda sad but I don't have much time to play games and when I do, I like to play with friends I know so it will always be Halo3 for me over trying out something new. I've wasted enough $60 game purchases in the past that I know that the hottest game of the week is done and over with by the time I have a chance to actually pick it up.

I'll check out OT though and look out for the madness that is Dax the trekkie...

Playing campaign again with my friend who just got a wireless adapter. We're going on legendary. Holy shit I want that loading screen as a desktop. My god.

Halo 2 tried to do to much and failed. Only the most hardcore players may possibly remember what happened, I don't most even understood what was going on as it happened. It's the main reason Halo 3's story was shit. It's easy enough to set up convoluted story arks as players can easily shrug them off and forget about them. But trying to wrap them up just makes those players confused and the feel directionless.

I don't mind when some scenes jump out of 1st person but when every cutscene is some jarring minute long segment of the protagonist doing something totally unlike what you do in game from a perspective that's totally foreign to the game, it's distracting and comes off as lazy.

I'm all for the occasional zoom out and watch these ships shoot lasers at each other or showing something else completely beyond the player character.

Perhaps being one of those hardcore players, I didn't experience this myself. But I can see how a lot of people would get lost, given the complexity and the two interlocking narratives. And of course, the narratives were intended to come together in the end and didn't.

It wasn't perfect. I've written previously at length (in this thread, somewhere, I think) about the flaws. But the broad stroke of it was, I'd rather see a crazy-ambitious story be told well, with flaws, than a small, focused story be told perfectly. I think Halo 2 landed on the former. So on this we're going to have fundamental disagreements in preference and general storytelling philosophy which I can tell we are simply not going to bridge.

Like I said, we've done this dance before. As for Halo 2, it has my favorite story of any game, ever. So you've got a heavy lift convincing me it was shit. (That's not an invitation to try. Quite the opposite. :p)

All that said, I'm pretty excited about the story telling in ODST, both for what I've seen on paper and for what we've seen in execution so far. It crystallizes the best elements of the approaches taken in the three Halo games, and tries a few new methods in the mix (like the extended first person cinematic views during the drop and while on the bridge). So let's just agree that we're excited about ODST, and agree to disagree about Halo 2, and drop it once and for all. :)

The average length for Halo 2's cutscenes was awesome, and I was expecting the same for Halo 3.

The main problem with Halo 3's story was it tried to go back to the fishbowl of Halo 1 (small, self-contained, myopic). We lost most everything that Halo 2 added in the story department, and it hurt the game in the end. I know I'm not alone when I say the stories surrounding the Covenant were often stronger than the human stories (The Halos gave those two worlds an intersection point). The third game tossed out the better part of its story for the sake of avoiding Arbiter levels, basically.

Really wish there had been Arbiter levels in Halo 3. Arbiter levels were on par with the Chief levels for the most part.

I'v asked this a couple times but haven't had any real response but, does anyone think there is any chance of a mini ARG for ODST? I think an ARG is a great opportunity for Bungie to tell a fun story in context to ODST's within an alternate reality game.
