I have some extremely noob questions. Is ranking in the top 3 of a Lone Wolf match essentially equal to "winning"? How do you rank up/get exp points from Lone Wolf?
Thanks!
It all depends on your rank. The top 3 positions get EXP and a possible rank-up, but in the higher ranks you have to place either 1st or 2nd to rank up (for me it was after rank 35).

Edit: I forgot to mention that you have to place in 1st or 2nd in multiple consecutive games to rank-up when you're in the higher ranks.

Uhh, actually I think that if you finish top 3 you rank up a little bit. It's not like if you finish 3rd ten consecutive times in LW in the upper levels (40+) you'll go down. Think of it like the Halo 2 experience bars; if you come top 3, you'll go up a little bit, bottom three down a little bit.

No no no. It depends on your rank compared to the each of the other 5 players ranks.

You could beat 4 players that all have lower rank than you and lose to the one player who was 5 ranks below you and that would make you lose a certain amount of invisible trueskill units (ITU) that you actually lose more ITU than you won by beating the other 4 players. Net ITU. and all that.

Its really all about who you are expected to beat and who you are expected to lose to.

Even though you got second place.

Theres a calculator over at Xboxlive.com but bungie runs a modified version of the Trueskill so its not that helpful, plus its not that customizeable to fit a game of H3 LW.

When I hear "longshore," I think of this beauty:

Same. After a three week break.
It's funny when I see people talking about how easy it is to jump into Halo 3 after time off, because it's just not like that for me. When I play every day for a week, by the seventh day I'm getting at least a 5+ K/D in every game, but when I take anymore than three days off, I'm just terrible.

Valhalla - "hi"

Epitaph - "look over here"

High Ground - "I beg to differ"

Standoff - "Seriously guys"

Isolation - "I am beautiful, no matter what they say, and words can't bring me down, no no no"

Seeing Relic has got me thinking. Halo 2 has got the best suite of maps in the series.

Zanzibar
Burial Mounds
Relic
Lockout
Midship
Hang'em High remake
Sanctuary
That large Snow level
The level with the subway, Terminal?
Covenant map with the Sword in the tree.
Beaver Creek
Collossus
Turf

Any others that were stand outs?

Ivory Tower. <3

Shit ya. That was the one with the over shield ramp. I really liked that map. It almost feels like Containment was the spiritual successor of Ivory Tower. I remember people camping the top where the sniper spawns, kinda like the 'lobby' in Containment. It had the two 'streets' by-way-of the shotgun and over shield ramps.

Ivory tower never had much area to it. You could grab the sniper rifle and book-it to the opposite side of the map within seconds, it handled the 'verticallity' well. The Sword floor, Rocket floor/Shotgun floor and Sniper floor.

I played a lot of Big team battle when Halo 2 first shipped and I always thought Headlong was a blast, especially for three plots which I am now officially campaigning for it's return to replace territories.

no other map touches this

The rule of thumb for Halo 2 was that the smaller maps were awesome. Except maybe Beaver Creek, must I think I just didn't like that because I wasn't very good at it... In general though, the small maps were fantastic. Which is why I loved Double Team in Halo 2 so much.

Halo 2 had great mid-size maps. I think Halo 3 has the BTB map crown at this point, with Valhalla, Avalanche, Rat's Nest, Standoff and Last Resort.

Assembly will be beloved.

Yes. I see the resemblance. :lol

JK I know you meant Construct.

Yeah. :) which one is Containment? Is that even a map? I can't see any pics I'm at work.

NM the free one, right.

Anyone notice any other similarities between maps. Beside the obvious Guardian = Lockout.

Thinking more about the:

Ivory Tower = Construct
Sword floor = Flame Thower
Rocket spawn = player spawns
Sniper Spawn = Lobby
Elevator = Yellow Lift
Over-shield and ShotGun = The Two Streets

Like Sanctuary kinda felt like Hang'em High

i would love to see some more small maps in halo three for reg slayer.

also, is it just me but wasn't there a matchmaking in Halo 2 that loaded all random weapons 1st and secondary. i would love a section that did all randoms, all rockets, all shotguns, all beat downswith plasma grenades only on midship. i would die for that!

Yea like Armory or something. It was short lived I believe...

Its not my favorite ever, but that sexy waterfall just past construct is pretty nice also.

Also, Guardian is really good looking. I was a little disappointed that we never saw a campaign level set in guardian's local. Maybe it was originally planned and never made the cut.... who knows. It's just such an exotic location, I thought for sure we would visit something like it in campaign. Unfortunately it was never to be. :(

halo 2 maps r the best.
This is pretty widely accepted and understood, but thanks to the map packs, and some map weapon-location updates, I've grown to really enjoy halo 3's maps. I'd say the halo 2 maps just played better as a whole though. Halo 2's gameplay seemed to complement the mid sized maps better, where I agree with Ghaleon that Halo 3's gameplay complements larger maps better. I think the spartan lazer and homing rocket nerf were the best tweaks seen to vehicle maps.

Waterworks... think I got a little tired of it eventually but I loved defending that base during bomb and ctf games.

We need the Bungie Store to open back up. I didn't feel like I bought enough gear with the Bungie shirts I got at PAX. I have been looking around for a laptop case and almost got a RvB one at the booth, but if there had been a Bungie/Halo one there I would have picked it up for sure.

Eh... looks like I was wrong. The Zune artwork can be found over at HBO (here), and it's not in that zip.

Hm...

Sanctuary and Ivory Tower have ALWAYS been my favorite Halo 2 maps, which is why I was always disgusted by the Lockout fans. If only us Ivory Tower/Sanctuary fans were as rabid/whiny.

Dear Bungie/Microsoft,

Release these maps together for the price of 1200 points or 800 points this month to accompany the September MM Update and AU2.

kthx.

It's gonna be 1200 at the least, probably more like 2000 since Microsoft has say in price point.

If those achievements are indeed real, going by the (in the description) "After 9/25/08" achievement, we should get at least three of those new maps this month.

I say, special discount just because it's celebrating the anniversary of Halo 3 (just a guess) they will be generous and release it for 800 points.

Ha, who the hell am I kidding? It's Microsoft :lol

Yeah, I remember this pic from before Halo 3 came out, I asked someone where it was at, they said it was on the Zune (I have the Halo one) and it wasn't :\ The only place I've seen it was on AJ I think.. Someone may have used it as an avatar here as well.
