I'm sure most MLG players will scoff at this video due to lack of headshots, but it made me go '?' when I saw I got a kill unexpectedly. Its on Avalanche, and it makes my heart ache that I've never had a proper custom game on it yet : (

I've been playing Head to Head today and have been matched up with a bunch of quitters/negative EXP dudes. I met crifface in this Head to Head match where he quit right off the bat.

More negative dudes to follow:
nubeponer - quit at the beginning of this Head to Head match.
ZAHjrstyrI - quit at the beginning of this Head to Head match.
BLAKKSNYPUR66 - quit the match after a minute but still has a -313 exp penalty score. Played him in this Head to Head match.
King Red V1 - quit at the beginning of the match with exp penalties bringing him down to almost 0 EXP - played him in this H2H match.

Apparently, H2H is where these kids go to bring their EXP scores down.

Dammit. Who am I going to get my first hand report of D-Watch from? The most important D-Watch of our time?

After reading the past couple of posts it seems like ya'll are little behind the times.

We [competitive players] have been complaining about host since halo1. If you really want a fair advantage you'll never get it, that is... unless bungie incorporates a dedicated host for the game. The only thing close to having a fair match is on LAN and even then their is a host advantage.

The whole point of my post you ask? STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT HOST. Unless you go to an event in person then it's useless to complain about something out of your hands. :) Cheers.

Nope. He's got a point too. Stop complaining about it. It's part of peer to peer gaming, the advantages of which sometimes outweigh the negatives. Even, as he notes, on a LAN.

Although I don't really understand what a "fair advantage" is.

I don't get it, do you level up faster if you have low EXP?

Yeah, I know. Those kids weren't necessarily complaining about the fact that there's a host in halo, a fact that by now everyone fucking knows and accepts. When someone forces host, and then abuses it by fucking with everyone elses connections - thats not an event you can say "don't complain about"

KevinRo is right. Earlier in the thread, people were complaining about things that are clearly lag-related: stuck from around the corner, shot through a wall, and whatnot. It's something that we'll always have to put up with with online gaming. Be happy it's not as bad as in Halo XBC, or even Halo 2.

Some people think so, but no. You level up faster if you have few games played in a given playlist, so you win most of the games you play. Not the same thing.

There was a glitch for boosting in doubles if you have purposely lost a lot of games, but I think the reintroduction of mixed-party restrictions might have fixed that. I don't think it's anything to do with negative EXP, just having lost a lot of games. The easiest way to lose in doubles is quit, is all.

Kibbles said:
There's host advantage on System Link? As in, 2 Xbox 360s connected, not through a router.

Of course. It's just so insignificant, it would be difficult to call it an advantage, unless something was causing an irregular amount of latency on the local connection.

qft

but we are not kids.

Eazy, your GIFs look shit. They look like a stop-motion film.

What application are you using?
I'm using Fireworks CS3 and I'm pretty new to making gifs. Of course I wouldn't mind making them look better I'm satisfied with my results.

You could make a gif that holds up to any of my flight animations

Well at least they aren't doing it in team games.

<3 Chopper
I remember a time when everyone thought the chopper was useless; I miss that. I could uncontestedly hop on one during any game. Now everyone scrub on Halo feels the need to use one; much sadness :(

Ok maybe I missed the boat on this whole conversation, but can someone explain to me why it took my brother and I 10 straight wins in team doubles to go from level 25s to level 26s? We have played roughly 45 doubles games, and have not lost yet. Is it better to lose a game from time to time so that the uncertainty in our ranking goes up?

/frustration

Most likely, yeah.

TrueSkill works that way for some stupid reason.

Only a 26 in doubles? I smell something fishy Tango :P

Nevermind. You guys were kicking our asses. And none of my team mates besides Hostile, another new GAFfer, had mics or were worth a damn.

Yeah that always blows. I wish there was a filter that would only match you up against teams of at least 4 or 5 in Social.

Good read on the E3 fiasco from a broader perspective - how publishers dominate the gaming industry, as they do film and music.

"In many cases, the creative leads just aren't interested in running HR and accounting and finance anymore," Bungie CEO Harold Ryan says of the reason most developers eventually agree to be bought. "They also need help to sustain their burn rate in between games."

Bungie was in a unique position, Ryan says, because of the financial cushion provided by nearly a decade working on one of the most successful franchises in videogame history.

Most developers of high-end console games, which typically cost more than $20 million, simply can't afford to raise that money and take those risks. The alternative, which more young developers are pursuing, is to make low-cost downloadable games with a small team.

That's an increasingly important segment of the market. But for many, the ultimate accomplishment is to work on the titles with the best graphics, most sophisticated gameplay and deepest stories.

Bungie's newfound independence is a test of whether that work can be done successfully in a model where growth leads to independence, not the end of it.

"Having seen Bungie internal and external to Microsoft, I think the creative energy is much more enhanced by being independent," Ryan says. "But if we mess it up for the next 10 years, we'll have to find some alternative."

There's a big difference between a Bungie convention (Bungiecon) and a Halo convention (Halocon). The former would be awesome and the latter would make me sad.

I think it's just a general term that would encompass all Bungie projects. Has a nice ring to it and gathers people's attention. It's kind of like a party, they come for the beer but stay for the laughs.

If there was was such an event, I would hope it would make its debut in 2009. I don't have the money to take another trip back to Seattle this year after PAX next month.

I agree with eazy on this one.

I'm all for a bungiecon, but as it stands now, I need to be shown that MS (and whichever studio designs the next halo game) is up to the challenge of continuing the quality of this franchise. I have zero desire to attend an event for a halo game made by someone else, until they can prove to me that they have handled the franchise approprietly. This seems like the wrong way to start off in my opinion.

If it was in LA I'd swing by, but I'm not traveling.

Seems like Eurogamer asked a hypothetical question, "could there be a Halo convention?" and this Frank suit from M$ gave a hypothetical answer, including the idea that Bungie had done it successfully at a small scale in the past, with FanFests.
So, Halofest confirmed then?

It's too late. The blogs have picked up on it. That means it's true.

BTW, any update on the answer to that question?
I thought briefly about it briefly, then forgot it utterly. Sorry. I think I'd rather not draft something myself, especially since I'm not involved in the project. But thanks for asking. :)

Poor Frank. Dude, just don't say anything anymore. :lol

Edit: Hey guys, we still have that IRC channel open.

Server's EFNet and the channel is #Bungie

You have any recommended tutorials on gif making in Fireworks? I need something kind of simple because I'm an idiot.

lol.

Were there any video cameras there? Maybe this has been linked on GAF somewhere, but I've yet to find a clear grouping of ALL of the info discussed by the panel since most of the press is naive to the finer details of the Halo universe. I've found no audio or video recordings anywhere covering the panel as they've had in the past. :(

I would be down for a Halocon it is when a Flightcon pops up that we know everything has gone to far :P
