I really don't know much about the SMT series, and haven't really played too many RPGs since the PSX era. Whenever theres a topic about rpgs, SMT never fails to come up. Since Atlus is reprinting Nocturne, and FES comes out soon I'm very tempted to buy them both and give the series a try, but I don't know enough to just dive in quite yet. I know Atlus is known for making challenging and rare games, but its going to take more than that to sell me. So I come to you GAF, whats so great about the SMT series? Why should I buy them? What separates them from the rest of the JRPGs? Whats the general game mechanics? And most importantly, hows the story?

It is a series in the loosest sense of the word. Nocturne is a (hard as fuck) Wizardry style RPG, DDS is Final Fantasy style, DS is action-RPG, and Persona is a breed unto itself. The only commonalities are reused graphical assets, spell names, fundamentally similar fusion systems (sometimes), and a general avoidance of standard RPG and gaming cliches.

I really like how the directors make the stories. They value brevity.

We should just make an SMT megathread, so we don't have 5 threads devoted to the series within the last three weeks (one on Persona 2, one on Nocturne, one on P3, one on FES, and one on a few)

Closest thing we have is this:

So judging by this, I'll have to look up the games individually and judge from there. Thanks!
