In a new interview with CNBC, Sega’s Chief Operating Officer Shuji Utsumi provided a bit more information on what to expect with Sega’s ‘Super Game’.

During its last earnings call, Utsumi revealed that the company’s first ‘Super Game’ is aiming for a release by the end of the “fiscal year ending March 2026”. “As the name implies, a ‘Super Game’ involves the concept of a game that stands head and shoulders above normal games”, he said.

In the new interview with CNBC, Utsumi shed some more light on what the ‘Super Game’ entails.

“Super Game is not just a game, when we introduced that name there was a big of buzz about the Metaverse, it’s not exactly Metaverse, so we tried to figure out what is the right word, so we came up with the name called ‘Super Game’.”

Utsumi continued,

“It’s not only a game, but also community, user-generated content, and a new way of having fun with games.”

The new comments start to build a vivid picture of what we could expect this new ‘Super Game’ to entail, with Utsumi’s last comments in the earnings call saying that the new ‘Super Game’ “builds a whole worldview involving the entire gaming ecosystem, including not only players but also streamers who stream the game and their viewers”.

Expectations adjusted to an even lower setting.

"New ways to having fun with games"

Well you actually did exactly this with Sonic Frontiers, where the fun was about finding a place close enough for the platforms to actually pop-in so that you could somehow find the path to reach poop number 457 high up in the sky. A game in the game.

They were already tapping into community content on Sonic Forces.

But yeah, the Super Game definitely sounds like a typical Metaverse from the sounds of it, even if they deny it. Really no idea what to expect at this point.

All the ridicule of the "Metaverse" and Facebook's failure made the concept toxic, so they try to rebrand.
Same shit, different name.

There is still so much unknown about this game that it's impossible to say if it'll be a success or not.

Sega could strike gold and have the next Minecraft or Roblox, or it could be an epic fail and be the next Hyenas.

LOL.

With Hyenas they already failed at trying to copy the GAAS shooter trend with what was reportedly one of their most expensive games ever.
Now they are getting ready to fail trying to copy Roblox with an even more expensive game

Honestly, not to be cynical at all, just realistic. But what are the chances of that actually happening. Like, it's extremely unlikely. First of all, planning to make a game the "next ______" anything is already starting it off on a bad note. Things catch fire because they're surprising and unique, not because the developer is chasing trends of what made something else a cultural phenomenon. It won't work, and they'll waste too much money trying to make it happen.

Maybe try making a “good game” before you jump straight to a super game.

Sonic Maker, clearly.

They know any random guy out there can make better Sonic levels than they can, so they’re going “fuck it” and just allow people to make their own officially.

I remember that this sort of nonsense was part of the pitch when Haven opened up their studio. They're working on a boring looking piece of shit gaas game.

Slim. Very slim. Especially, as you correctly pointed out, if their goal is to replicate the success of Minecraft or Roblox.

SMH Sega is always playing catchup. Nintendo has been making Super games since 1985.
