I sometimes feel that people who make horror comedies are people who don't feel confident in their horror making capabilities. There are some good ones of course (Widow's Bay), but I mostly just end up hoping that they would have been straight up horror instead of going the campy route. The comedy too often ends up neutering any tension build-up.

I think it's more a modern horror comedy problem. Or modern mainstream movies in general (about the lack of confidence).

Compare movies like Evil Dead II, American Werewolf in London, Re-animator, Gremlins (more the first one), The Stuff or Return of the Living Dead with a lot of modern horror comedies. They need more guts, meaner spirit, trust in the audience, higher stakes, darker humor (not just blood) and being less politically correct (a lot of journalists would hate it, of course). Look how Better Watch One is one of the closest to them in the last 10 years while being critisized because it's "too mean".

I'm not saying there aren't good modern horror comedies, but yeah, I think the same since a long time.

We'll see about this movie anyway.
