PSP-1000 (original model PSP) battery issue

A few years ago, I bought a PSP-1000 on the cheap with hacked firmware (way out of date now). The problem is, the battery will drain on its own, even when the system isn't being used.

Will replacing the battery fix this?

Is the hacked firmware tied to the battery itself?

Will replacing the battery cause me to lose my hacked firmware?

How easy is it to still find a good, cheap PSP-1000 battery?

Anything I can do to fix this problem WITHOUT replacing the battery?

Forgive the n00b questions, but I didn't hack this myself and I haven't tried to upgrade it since.

Thanks, GAF.

1. All rechargeable batteries DO drain themselves over time, but it should take a while. How long does it take yours?

2. Just buy a new battery. It won't hurt the PSP's firmware in any way. They should be readily available.

- My PSP 1000 will no longer charge the battery for some reason. It's borked. Even with a new battery I have to just keep it plugged in to play it. Since there are all these rumors of a new PSP model I'll just make do with it as is until then.

It starts draining itself almost immediately, from what I can tell.

Thanks, I'll look online.

Any chance that this is a system issue, and NOT a battery issue? I'd hate to waste money on a new battery if that won't help.

Firmware isn't tied to the battery.

You need a new battery.

Edit: You're turning it Off, not sleep right? (some ppl don't know the difference).

Yeah, I'm turning it off. But just in case, explain the process to me. How do I turn it off vs. just putting it in sleep mode? 99.9% sure I'm doing it right, but it doesn't hurt to double-check.

hold vs flick...the power switch.

I have a question related to PSP-1000's battery as well. It seems that my PSP's battery life has degraded a lot in the last few months. It doesn't last more than 1 hour even when I'm playing games off the MS.

So I was thinking of buying a new one. Do you guys have any suggestions (battery models, online shops with low prices that ship to Europe)?

My PSP-1000 has been like that almost since when `i got it back in April 2005 (Damn, 4 years already).

I regularly run custom firmware and I'm up to date.

All I have to do is leave the unit fully charged and turn it off (not sleep). Come back in 2 or 3 weeks and the battery is dead. So dead that I have to set the time and date again when it is plugged back in to charge.

But it's always been like this as far as I can remember.

For real?

This happens to me too but only when the battery indicator is flashing (aka almost running out of juice).

I've got the same exact problem with my PSP-1000. I plug it in to charge and come back a couple weeks later without playing it and I have to recharge it and put the date in time in. I was gonna buy a new PSP, but I'm gonna wait and see if new models/updates are coming soon.

Mine is exactly the same. No big deal though. It does last a long time running games off the memory stick if fully charged though.

Mine does that too. It loses a full charge in a couple weeks. I've left my DS alone for months before and it would still have a charge.

I need a new battery. The one I have only holds about three hours of charge. I wish Sony was still making the extended batteries.

My PSP still has its launch battery and it drains so fast, even in sleep mode. I just haven't bothered to replace it since I always play it with the AC adapter connected. Probably lasts like 1 or 2 hours without it.

So basically the DS has no games? :D

Mine is the same. Was yours always like this?

my launch battery gradually declined to the point where it was lasting half as long as it used to, so i just got a new one.

rechargeable batteries tend to do that over time.

I have a launch PSP (US) and the battery is draining itself too. I'm not surprised, it's been like 4 years since it came out and I'm pretty sure I recharged it enough times past the standard.

I need to find the larger capacity batteries for cheap. That isn't one of those ghetto chinese ones.

ghetto chinese one from playasia works for me, been using it well over a year now.

I started experiencing the same issue with my US launch PSP a few months ago. I really wanted to get a genuine Sony battery, but it's been a difficult search. The small 1200 mAh batteries for the 2000/3000 series can be obtained easily, but the larger batteries for the 1000 series have disappeared entirely from most stores. Ultimately, I managed to spot a Sony 1800 mAh battery about 2 weeks ago in an FYE and bought it, but haven't opened it yet.

My battery for my PSP sucks too. I never take my PSP outside, so I just bought the Nyko charger grip! awesome battery life now!

At least your PSP battery isn't like mine.

Mine dies in 10 minutes after I turn it on, sometimes as low as 5 mintues.

:(

Thank god it comes with a power adapter.

I have the same problem with my PSP battery in the same model number. It really sucks, especially if I haven't touched it for a few weeks and suddenly get the itch to play it. It's not like my DS at all where I'll not play it for months and it will still have a solid charge.

What's the consensus on the higher capacity battery they sell? I've been thinking about picking one up.

I just ordered a new battery from Ebay. I had to go with a third party one, but the prices are surprisingly very good. We'll see how it goes. If it sucks or doesn't fix the problem, well, I'm only out a few bucks.

Thanks for all your help and feedback, guys.

Ok, I think my PSP is doing some weird shit or something. I got the new battery I just posted a few weeks ago. Maybe the battery is fucked, I don't know...it arrived with a 0% charge, which isn't normal. Batteries are suppose to be 50% charged but I guess these things have been sitting in a warehouse for years I guess. Anyway, I fully charged it right away, left it in my PSP and I haven't touched my PSP since then. I just turned it on today and it's already at 80%. And yes, it was fully powered off, none of that sleep mode crap. I wonder if a hacked firmware makes any difference, but the battery lost 1/5 of its charge in just about 2 weeks. What the hell?

Hmm I dunno if this is 100% correct but don't Lithium-Ion batteries have a shelf life from the day they are manufactured.
Like if you had a brand-new battery sitting on shelf in warehouse for 4 years, its useful life would be shorter than if it was used from new.

You need a new PSP. Mine does the exact same thing. It'll lose power on it's own, only lasts about 90 minutes on a full charge. I bought a new battery, didn't do any good. Google it and you'll see it's a pretty wide spread issue with the 1000 series. I'm waiting for the next model before I buy a new one. If the new model doesn't have UMD, I'll probably search ebay for a 2000. Oh well, my son will get a kick out of it.

My PSP-2000 has this issue, and has had it since new before I put custom firmware on it. The battery will drain in a couple of weeks even with the system off.

2200 mAh battery, compatible with 1000 model. $12.99 shipped, legit and new. Sony Official.

Considering MSRP on PSP batteries is $40, I'd say those are counterfit chiniese. Sony stopped making the stamina batteries shortly after the PSP 2000's came out. They stopped making them in that packaging even before that.

When the PSP-2000 models came out Sony introduced these:

(Stamina battery with larger battery cover for PSP-2000 owners who wanted better battery life)

Now it seems Sony has decided to pretend PSP-1000 owners don't exist anymore and stopped making either the regular(1800 ma/h) or Stamia(2200 ma/h) batteries for the PSP-1000(or for people who have 2000 or 3000 series models and want increased battery life).

I'm glad I snagged a spare stamina battery when I did.
