After the two other sledders ran into me the pain was beyond severe. I knew it was broken right away (despite never previously breaking a bone in my life) and screamed at my 10-year old cousins to go get my girlfriend from the top of the hill. She came and supported my back because if I laid straight on my back I would start blacking out from the pain. We waited for a half hour before the paramedics came and a couple Good Samaritans came and protected me from people who kept sledding at me by knocking them off their sleds; the anxiety of the unaware divebombing sledders coming at me and not knowing how severe the injury was only enhanced the physical pain.

The pain was made worse when the Chicago Firefighters that came transferred me roughly to a board, dragged me across the snow instead of carrying me, didn't brace my leg during the ambulance ride and took me to one of the worst hospitals in the city where I sat in a hallway for 25 minutes anyone started treatment.

Here's me recovering in the hospital after shattering my femur and hip and having a 13 inch plate implanted into my leg with nine screws. Pro-tip : don't go sledding off a hill, fly a foot into the air, land, hear a pop and then have two different people slam directly into your femur at full speed at 15 second intervals.

Your story of breaking your femur is surprisingly close to mine. I was doing a glorified version of sledding called swiss bobbing and lost control on an icy patch of choppy snow. I started skipping along the snow and saw I was coming up on a big tree real fast. I knew I couldn't do anything about it and just braced myself as best I could.

I hit the tree, saw a huge flash of light and was then rolling down the hill. After I stopped I knew something was wrong with my left leg. I tried to move it but it kind of flopped instead. Turns out I snapped my left femur in half. It now has a metal rod and some screws holding it in place.

It was the worst pain in my life.
