PAL Charts - Week 47, 2013

I love how people are always coming up with reasons why the Wii U isn't selling. First it's the economy, but in the face of the £429 Xbox One nearly outselling the Wii U LTD in a week, it's now "The Wii audience is still content."

The Wii U isn't selling because it's trying to focus on an audience that's long since moved on while only offering token gestures to the core gamer. As a core console, it's a hard sell due to the lack of third-party support and as a second console it's a hard sell because of the steep price.

Nintendo's always been adverse to the razor blade theory, but in this case it's exactly what they need to execute.

Still active =/= still content. Being happy with Wii now isn't the reason for why they didn't bought a Wii U now.

Wii U is awfully advertised, overpriced, some retailers not even stock it, there's the belief it's just a Wii revision and the Gamepad is a Wii controller and most of people not even know what a Wii U is. Nintendo made a terrible choice in the name of the machine and while Wii remains with an active user base (and there is), there'll be confusion around Wii U. Remember when Nintendo email'd Wii owners about Wii U being a brand new system and not just an upgrade?

http://www.destructoid.com/nintendo-urges-wii-owners-to-discover-wii-u-252827.phtml

That's the kind of confusion Nintendo needs to reed off.

With 9x less and 6.5x less software sold than the 360 and PS3 respectively through October, franchises dependent upon it collapsing, and software massively down year over year, the Wii installed base is clearly still incredibly active. And that's obviously the major reason that this failing product is failing.

And the bewildered Europeans are just too stupid to realise that it both exists in the marketplace and that it's not an accessory product, and upon that realisation will suddenly be compelled to purchase the revolutionary product. Somehow, in a manner that eludes everyone, they managed to wrap their tiny minds around the idea that the Xbox One wasn't the first Xbox and go out and buy it.

It's clearly the market's fault, it has nothing to do with the product simply being not being a compelling value proposition to the consumer market.

Sony’s PS4 is officially the fastest selling console in UK history.

Gfk Chart-Track has confirmed that the machine has beaten PSP’s eight year-old sales record of 180k units sold in its first week. Xbox One sold 150k units in its first week.

(Note that in both instances ‘week’ refers to Chart-Track’s sales week, which ends Saturdays – so most console’s ‘week one’ sales actually spans 48 hours).

The exact number of PS4s sold in the UK was not revealed, although MCV understands that the figure is not just higher than PSP’s 180k, but significantly so.

The highest charting PS4 exclusive is Sony’s Killzone Shadow Fall at No.4 followed by Knack in 13th.

Platform fans note that Sony’s critically slammed effort beats Nintendo’s critically adulated Super Mario 3D Land into 14th, suggesting the Japanese struggles of Nintendo’s game could be repeated on this side of the globe – although you’d of course expect the Wii U game to have better legs.

There’s a slight shuffle at the top of the Top 40 with Call of Duty: Ghosts seemingly benefitting most from the PS4’s arrival, climbing one place to No.1 at the expense of FIFA 14 which drops to No.3. Battlefield 4 holds firm at No.3.

Of EA’s football game Chart-Track notes: “After being heavily boosted by the Xbox One Day 1 Edition bundles last week, FIFA 14 has to settle for second place in the All Formats Chart despite strong sales on PS4.”

Xbox One exclusives Forza 5 and Dead Rising 3 drop out of the Top Ten to 15th and 18th respectively.

Drops for One exclusives

Forza Motorsport 5 (also bundles) - 5th to 15th
Dead Rising 3 - 7th to 18th
Ryse: Son of Rome - 10th to outside top 20, I suppose

New games charting: 2 (Killzone and Knack) + Rivals going all up.

Ukie, ladies and gentlemen

Sony’s PS4 has well and truly landed, becoming the fastest selling video game console in UK history. It overturns the 8 year record held by the original PSP and eclipses the launch week sales of both PS3 and Xbox One. ‘Call of Duty: Ghosts’ (+33%) returns to No1 outselling ‘FIFA 14’ (-0%) by just over 6,000 units this week. After being heavily boosted by the Xbox One Day 1 Edition bundles last week, ‘FIFA 14’ has to settle for second place in the All Formats Chart despite strong sales on PS4. ‘Battlefield 4’ (+85%) holds on to No3 ahead of top selling PS4 exclusive title ‘Killzone: Shadow Fall’ at No4. The official PS4 Killzone hardware bundles help give Sony’s title the edge over EA in the PS4 chart with ‘FIFA 14’ at No2 and ‘Battlefield 4’ at No3, while ‘Call of Duty: Ghosts’ and ‘Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag’ sit at No’s 4 and 5 respectively. Every title in the All Formats Top 10 is on PS4 apart from ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ (+92%) at No7 and ‘Batman: Arkham Origins’ (+155%) at No10. All Top 10 titles increase sales this week with only sales of FIFA 14 remaining flat. ‘Assassin’s Creed IV’ (+19%) drops one place to No5 ahead of ‘Lego Marvel Super Heroes’ (+39%), a non-mover at No6. It might not be on the latest formats, but sales of ‘GTA V’ still jump by 92% this week, helping it climb one place to No7. However, PS4 software sales have certainly helped ‘Need for Speed: Rivals’ (+159%) which jumps into the Top 10, up from No13 to No8. ‘Just Dance 2014’ (+127%) is also out on PS4, but it’s a rise in sales on Wii that propels it into the Top 10, up from No14 to No9. It looks like Black Friday retailer promotions have been working their magic on certain titles with ‘Batman: Arkham Origins’ also back in the Top 10, up from No16 to No10. Other than Killzone, there are three more new titles that make appearances in the Top 40 this week: PS4 exclusive ‘Knack’ debuts at No13, ahead of ‘Super Mario 3D World’ on Wii U at No14 and ‘Injustice: Gods Among Us – Ultimate Edition’ at No38.

Given last weeks numbers, and this week's drops / increases...

FIFA 14 (-0%) - 177,500

‘Call of Duty: Ghosts’ (+33%) returns to No1 outselling ‘FIFA 14’ (-0%) by just over 6,000 units this week.

Call of Duty: Ghosts (+33%) - around 184,000

God, I'll have to review each and every COD estimate from last weeks, right? :lol

Battlefield 4 (+85%) - 133,511
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (+19%) - 82,149

Thanks Mpl.

I'm kind of surprised that Tomb Raider is still hanging on given the time of year. I think Square Enix managed to revive that one rather successfully. I doubt it actually sold like... a ton, but still doing around 10K units would be quite strong for a March release.

Will be interesting to see how the PS4/XB1 port does.

We seem to be seeing some revival of the cross-gen games with next-gen coming in. I imagine they will have an unusually long tail as people just wait and buy them for next-gen instead.

France week 47:

1 - Call Of Duty : Ghosts PS3 - Activision Blizzard
2 - The Legend Of Zelda : A Link Between Worlds 3DS - Nintendo
3 - Call Of Duty : Ghosts Xbox One - Activision Blizzard
4 - Ryse : Son Of Rome Edition Day One Xbox One - Microsoft
5 - Dead Rising 3 Edition Day One Xbox One - Microsoft

Damn you're quick. I'm really surprised Killzone > Ghosts on PS4.

Killzone had bundles, Ghosts didn't :P
This must be one of the biggest weeks sales wise in a long time. Having two launches right near each other certainly affects positions of other titles, released weeks before. Still, I fear that those Xbox One drops are way too pronounced to be just caused by that.

Hopefully, Guardian won't esitate in releasing shares this week. They're too important this time ;_;

EDIT: Assassin's Creed IV One out of top 40 O_O

From the article stating that 250k PS4 were sold in UK at launch

This means that the current-gen trio (which until recently referred to as ‘next-gen’) already enjoys an install base of around 600k units in the UK. Both PS4 and Xbox have already comfortably outsold Nintendo’s Wii U, which was released in the UK over a year ago.

PS4 launch - 250k
Xbox One launch - 150k
Nintendo Wii U's LTD - "slightly higher than One's debut" last week, so > 150k

PS4 + Xbox One (debut + second week) + Wii U LTD = 600k
250 + 150k + x + >150k = 600k

So, Xbox One's second week = <50k

Do we have an answer if the next-gen versions of cross-gen games helped to turn the negative tide of them selling less that their previous entry?

Maybe there are no more splits... ever. sadface.
You don't like reading about how a terrible cancer has afflicted this hobby since the PlayStation?

Seriously...

I think Chart-track may have paused supplying the splits for a few weeks because it would be easy to work out hardware sales from them for Xbox One due to the FIFA bundle.

Who do I have to "gently thank" for this? Because I'm so, SO happy that splits aren't being posted when two major launches happen, with the risk of them not appearing anymore. Seriously, I want to thank who decided this heavily. With an axe in one of my hands.

Seriously, we need answers. Anyone who can ask what's up, do it. Ask to Guardian, Ukie, Gfk...to FUCKING EVERYONE.

I fear we could be responsible, too. Maybe they saw we were obtaining sales through splits, and they decided to put them on hold ;_;

Maybe they noticed that we're messing around with splits and numbers and GfK isn't amused :o

And yeah, that post was fantastic. "CGI crowd". It's like I'm back in 1997 and people are pissed off that FF jumped ship to PS.

I would rather blame it on the multiplat games. As the launches were at different dates the splits for them would picture a denaturate image somehow (or not, as we saw with COD Ghosts for PS4). I wonder if the splits will be back next week. Or maybe there is still hope for this week. It's a pity as it was the most fun part of this.
