Newzoo PC & Console Gaming Market 2024 | Full Report

Looks like somebody managed to get their hands on the recently published Newzoo PC & Console Gaming Report, so I thought I would share it here in full. There might be information in it that various media outlets have not touched upon when covering the news.

And I also know that GAF is interested in these sort of industry reports so here you go!

PC increasing vs consoles. Nice more people seeing the light.

Only because a certain console brand is failing to pull its own weight despite only having launched new systems about four years ago 🙄.

Like what did people expect when the Switch is having a natural wind-down and PS5 is doing about as well as it could given overall business strategy and shifts in the 3P market? Xbox not pulling its weight is dragging down overall console growth but too many analysts are scared to say the obvious for whatever reason :/

Umm, on page 10 of the report, it states that the console revenue share is projected to grow from 57% in 2023 to 60% in 2026, while PC is expected to decline from 43% in 2023 to 40% in 2026. Or are you referring to overall MAUs increasing as growth for the PC? 🤔

TBF, I think it's more like "40% of the new total" relative to that new amount; the PC segment is still "growing" in that regard as the market itself is growing in revenue, but the PC's share of the increased revenue is lower than its share of the market when it was smaller. If that makes any sense.

SIE's GAAS/traditional budget funding slides from IIRC the FY '22 report were similar. Basically, percentages don't mean much unless the total amount of money is either increasing, decreasing, or stagnating and you know what the percentages are associated with.

Even so, yeah, it definitely dispels the notion that PC gaming is bigger than console gaming, even in terms of revenue (let alone B2P sales, for AAA or even AA games). I'd argue the main reason PC revenue stays competitive is because of a near-endless pool of legacy titles that might do crap numbers on their own, but combined give some decent totals missing on respective consoles.

And the other reason, would be the PC-exclusive GAAS titles like Counterstrike 2 (Valve), DOTA 2 (Valve), League of Legends, VALORANT, World of Warcraft etc. generating nice amounts of money on their own

Yeah, that's correct. Both segments are growing, just that console revenue growth is expected to outpace PC revenue growth, at least according to this Newzoo report.

Moreover, page 11 of the report states that console MAUs are increasing at a higher rate compared to PC. Tbh this comes as no surprise, considering the anticipated release of Switch 2 next year, along with a steady volume of PS5 (Slim and PS5 Pro units), and the continued presence of Xbox in the market.

So Covid didn’t inflate the numbers, which some were using as an excuse for all the layoffs. :pie_thinking:
