ModRetro M64 Review; a very mixed outing

I know a lot of people have been waiting for in depth reviews of the console and hardware so TL;DR the controller is worth every penny and is hands down the best feeling and performing N64 controller I have ever used or tested

The console needs some pretty fundamental software updates. From one update to the pre-review update the entire HDMI out was rendered basically unable to be captured with pixel clock issues and corruption in the signal sadly.

Definitely can be fixed but here is where it sits so far (and yes troubleshooting went through ModRetro before this)

Why would any normal person care about capturing HDMI output?
Because if it has HDMI out it needs to work 100% of the time across all devices that ingest HDMI.

Trust me...I have never plugged in a console to a capture card that would not properly capture. Ever. Not consoles. Not 50K PZT cameras. Nothing

and as a reviewer that needs to get footage onto the screen that is an issue

And as a reviewer I'd hope you understand 99% of the people buying something like this aren't going to be attempting to record output. Not saying it doesn't suck, but it's just not something people will care about.

I kinda just want the controller. But I feel like they will work out aoftware issues. Palmer is very clearly passionate about it and filthy rich.

But yea that controller looks sick.

Just speaking from personal experience, when there are handshaking/compatibility issues like the ones outlined above, the video signal issues are not limited to just capturing hardware, they can also cause problems when using AV splitters which is a GIANT pain in the ass if you have multiple devices running into a central display or bank of displays..

Correct. A capture card accepts NTSC / PAL broadcast signals. Those should be within spec. While its fine on my LG C4 an HDMI clock coming out not within spec can cause issues with splitters, switches and potentially even some televisions

That being said it is a software issue and CAN and I would assume will be fixed. But I have to review what I find

an out of spec signal will not just produce issues on capture cards. It can introduce issues across anything you want to plug it in whether that be a receiver, switch or even some tvs. HDMI is not supposed to be out of spec

Fair enough, it is a risk for anyone not just those capturing video, makes sense.

It does look like the console bumps up the resolution. Diddy Kong Racing does not look like crap and it is a low res game.
Analogue 3D just released an update that lets you double the resolution.

The purple version of the M64 looks pretty slick. It looks like they went with a dark purple.
The controller looks really nice.

I was going to go with the green, but the purple looks too good.

I also like that the console and controller have leds that light up. Even a little progress meter on the console lights up when it is updating.

I still want one tho

Love and appreciate the work Esoterica, but if the problems are limited to capture, I think the headline could describe it as a caveat. The frustration while trying to capture the content to make the video is understandable. Now I'm curious to see it tested a wide variety of displays to see if any TVs struggle with it. Great stuff as always.

Want the controller for sure. Will wait on the system to see what happens a bit. Being open source we may see some really cool stuff

Yeah. What I like about the console is that it is so damn playful. It actually looks cool and fun.
They are also making new games for it.
