MINIMUM EFFORT "better than Steam Machine" Steam Machine alternative thread

I have an oculink setup. I love it, but it isn't the prettiest thing to look at. It's a couch setup. Mine is taking up a shelf underneath my tv stand so you don't really see it.

I have the GMKtec M8 16gb ram with 2x 512gb drives and the 6650H. Oculink goes to a DEG1 dock and an MSI 3070.

I use a an arteck backlit BT keyboard and a xbox controller. Mainly steam big screen mode thingy.

It runs as expected with performance you would expect from a 3070.

The good thing is there is plenty of air since there is no case around the 3070. It's relatively quiet too
Well, looks wise 2 clean small boxes next to each other isn't the same as open GPU on top of eGPU mount. My suggested set up is pretty damn clean looks wise under or besides the TV in the entertainment center.

My only concern would be running an AMD GPU with an AMD CPU.

And mine isn't too bad. You have the mini pc and the GPU in front and all the cables hidden in the back mostly.

I personally dont mind open GPU look (kinda dig it) but this is for Joe blow scenario.

As for AMD + AMD, as long as you always to boot with eGPU, just disable iGPU and install drivers for the external GPU should be fine. I think problem comes from switching back and forth for handheld/laptop scenarios.

Good idea for a thread. Maybe compile people's suggestions, pointing weak points and strong ones.

All in all, steam machine is a good point for comparison for quality of builds.

You gotta be careful though. My mini pc doesn't have the option to disable the igpu in bios. Or i couldn't find it anyway.

Right. I guess you'd just crank down video RAM on the iGPU to low as possible (512MB?) and just install driver for the external GPU. As long as oculink is always attached and turned on first, system should ignore the iGPU...

The custom build bros already ruined the thread for that purpose cuz THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO FUCKING READ THE DAMN OP, so oh well....
