Quest 3 is still 12 months away, quest Pro is this year but its a very different price point (1500 usd). There might be another ar glasses set this year.
Damn, I really want a quest 3....I'll hold out.

Facebook had that option lol the cost was substantially more. The price you pay for not have them harvest your data, I suppose.
Who the fuck raises the M$RP on already released tech? I've had one for 2 years already but this is some bullshit.
It is probably still being sold at a loss, I think it was the last quarter finacials the oculus division had lost 10 billion.I know the conversation has moved from here but just wanted to answer the reason why. The Quest 2 was sold at a pretty big loss, the reason for this was because it had two revenue streams, a locked store front where you buy the games through Facebook (now meta) and the fact that because it forced you to use a Facebook account and sign an agreement that essentially said it would gather all your data and sell it.
With the disconnect from Facebook that means one of their revenue streams has been cut, the one by all accounts was the most lucrative. As such they have rebalanced the device price to account for this...
So that sounds like a good reason but really they should have designed and launched a quest 3, or even a quest 2+ with eye tracking at the higher price instead. I refuse to buy a quest until it has a version which uses eye tracking, with that being a feature in most enterprise level headsets and now the PS2VR.

Just did a quick google yeh burning some stacks of cash there.

Mark Zuckerberg's 'metaverse' business lost more than $10 billion last year, and the losses keep growing
Those losses for 2021 are in line with what Zuckerberg said last year he expected to invest in Reality Labs.www.cnbc.com
Plenty of companies. Most just hide it behind incremental releases of their products though.Who the fuck raises the M$RP on already released tech? I've had one for 2 years already but this is some bullshit.
Does it have to be inserted in your head? Is it a deal breaker if they find another solution like inserting it somewhere else?I dunno, I usually look forward to new innovative tech, but call me when VR is implemented through a chip that you insert in your head that beams the content directly to your brain, until then I'll stick to a standard gaming setup![]()
I mean, they could do it if not for the bad PR. In the case of the Quest my bet is that they didn't have a choice since they were bleeding too much money with the original price so they decided to the the PR loss. This kind of thing has to be pretty much unheard of? Imagine Xbox, Nintendo or Playstation raising their consoles price $100 mid gen?
And kill the product and the market because of 0 attachment rate. People like you have zero connection with the reality. It would still be worth it even if it were to cost $1,000. This will only keep the fence-sitters away.
Could you post a link of the Carmack talk? I'd like to watch it.Problem with this logic is that Quest 2 has outsold FB's most optimistic projections several times over. They designed and priced the device realistically expecting to sell a few million units, resulting in reduced economies of scale and a much more expensive BoM. Instead they sold 15-20+ million, meaning the cost per unit is much cheaper than they were ever forecasting. So even with wild component inflation it's still likely cheaper to build now than it was the first 6 months to 1 year.
The finger should really be pointed at them over hiring and over paying esoteric mad scientists who've drained $10 billion dollars a year working on science fiction shit that'll never make it into a product. This is something Carmack himself has complained about in his long form Oculus Connect speeches, lamenting how he could never get people to work on practical stuff with big short term gains. Everyone gravitated to pie in the sky shit that's never going to pan out. Meanwhile an unknown company Chinese company called Pico has managed to produce an arguably better Quest 2 with a fraction of a fraction of the resources.
nintendo atleast added something of value with the OLED model. an OLED screen of course.... and it's larger with slimmer bezels. more solid design with metal parts, double the storage capacity, redesigned dock, improved kickstand and speakers.I mean, they could do it if not for the bad PR. Nintendo sort of did increase the price of the Switch with their revision as well.
Nintendo has the advantage of selling a hardware that is ancient technology, still they made sure to charge for those few changes.nintendo atleast added something of value with the OLED model. an OLED screen of course.... and it's larger with slimmer bezels. more solid design with metal parts, double the storage capacity, redesigned dock, improved kickstand and speakers.
so it's not really the same thing but i do get your point. facebook are trying to punt the exact same hardware for $100 more.
sure but that wasn't your point.Nintendo has the advantage of selling a hardware that is ancient technology, still they made sure to charge for those few changes.

it makes sense from a business point of view but it's their own fault if they set the price too low. i guess they decided it'd be easier to hike the price and deal with the backlash than keep it at it's current price and treat customers with some respect. i hope it puts people off buying a Quest and pushes people to sell theirs because now the value has gone up. they are a scummy company and i hope they keep bleeding.Facebook was bleeding here and being way too aggressive with their price, as I said, it doesn't look good but it makes complete sense. I still don't see a better option for someone wanting to get into VR than the Quest.
More like people will rush out to buy at the old price and those selling used will hike up selling at little to no loss.it makes sense from a business point of view but it's their own fault if they set the price too low. i guess they decided it'd be easier to hike the price and deal with the backlash than keep it at it's current price and treat customers with some respect. i hope it puts people off buying a Quest and pushes people to sell theirs because now the value has gone up. they are a scummy company and i hope they keep bleeding.
Ghoul looking schmuck.
It's honestly still a bargain at the new price.Awesome I might sell mine then, make a profit lol

Look around there's not really any competition in that price bracket.
You either get Quest 2 or you get ............. Samsung Gear VR...?
The non-Quest Oculus headsets require a PC, while the HTC and Valve headsets are super premium-priced and require a PC. PSVR requires a... wait for it... Playstation.
When you look at it that way, Quest 2 is the only viable standalone option and therefore is sort of a "bargain".
The hardware loss is a very minor contributor to that figure. Even if they gave away 10 million units for free that year and every single one cost them $500 to build, you're still only at half that expenditure. The reality is they've grossly over hired and over paid a workforce that burns through money without producing marketable results or advantages that warrant that level of bleed. Multiple companies spending 1/100th or 1/1000th of that a year have managed to put out competitive hardware. It is probably still being sold at a loss, I think it was the last quarter finacials the oculus division had lost 10 billion.

The closest being the Pico Neo line of headsets but even they are priced at $699 (starting).Look around there's not really any competition in that price bracket.

The consumer Pico Neo (the 3 Link) isn't yet available in NA or in USD, you're quoting the business edition. It is however widely available in Europe, where it's 450 Euro for 256GB storage, the same price that the cheapest Quest 2 will be and 100 less than the 256GB Quest. The 3 Link would most likely be a $399 product in NA and could certainly match the $499 256GB Quest. They are reportedly staffing up a US branch to launch here and barter content deals. The closest being the Pico Neo line of headsets but even they are priced at $699 (starting).
The Vive Focus 3 is $1499 (if you can find one...these are very enterprise focused) and while both have superior hardware specs Oculus has far better software and user experience. So yeah...they can charge what they want and if you want an all in one headset you will pay it.
No it won't. $500 minimum. I won't be shocked at $600.Naw it'll be less than $500. Besides, Quest is a standalone device.

Yes most of the new Pico Neo devices are currently "for inquiry only" which usually means business/enterprise use. We have two of them (of the pro3 NOT Neo link....and one is a pico neo eye so it's more like a Neo 2.5) for enterprise dev. They don't have a great consumer support model and I don't know if they ever will. You can use side quest to load plenty of games etc, but I still think the Quest 2 is a better all in one solution for consumers AND enterprises. The consumer Pico Neo (the 3 Link) isn't yet available in NA or in USD, you're quoting the business edition. It will be between $499 and $599. Look at the specs. It's as powerful as any set on the market. You're insane if you think it could be $600

Sony maybe should have made a lower-end set at a more affordable price. That's debatable.
But they didn't. This thing can't cost less than that and it won't. I'd guess $500, but $600 is possible.
Those screens they're using ain't cheap.
Fuck Pockets!
PSVR2 is screens, sensors and controllers and plastic. Why would it cost so much?It will be between $499 and $599. Look at the specs. It's as powerful as any set on the market.

This is what I don't understand with companies like Facebook and Twitter. They have thousands of employees and pay them ridiculously well and I can't figure out what the hell most of them are doing. My wife's FB account was hacked at the beginning of June and FB has no support whatsoever, it's all AI based bullshit and it took over a month for her to get it back. How can a company worth billions with thousands of employees not have any fucking support for it's users? Blows my mind.
This is not remotely true, but it is in its price range quite good.It will be between $499 and $599. Look at the specs. It's as powerful as any set on the market.
It's all real, this is legitimately what large swathes of the so called "laptop class" gets paid $150K/yr to do all day.lmao I hope nothing of that is even in parts true
