Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite Gameplay Trailer

I'm glad they follow MVC3 art style. I was worried they would use SFV's models (cpt Marvel looks beautiful!).
I'm sure graphics will change over the course of development, and they will be improved.
We'll see how the gameplay ends, I remenber everybody hating the new air-tags and x-factor in MVC3...

No way Street Fighter V models are on another league. They also animate so well. I'm assuming Capcom made less detailed models as well as less animated so,they can have a larger initial roster.

I can see these choices paying off financially. I have bad feelings about tourney play though. Should be more interesting than SFxT tho, since the movesets are fundamentally less mundane.

Marvel peeps will drag this shit kicking and screaming to tourney relevance if they need to

it doesnt look serious, the models seem to just be missing lighting

That's fair enough.
Look, I'm not saying there are no colors in the game. And it's not a huge departure from MvC 3 either, but I liked the bolder look of the first 2 games, or even TvC's. I think it fits the ridiculousness of the premise and the gameplay better than than Infinite's.

Also, if you're trying to tell me the music isn't trying to be serious/epic, I don't know what to say. In fairness, this is just a trailer, so we'll see what the actual soundtrack is like. I just don't like what I'm hearing so far.

I'm pretty excited about this, largely because we know the game will have MCU relevant characters in it, so no more Shula-Goraths and Blackhearts. And with the exclusion of FF and X-Men characters, the Marvel side will be injected with new characters. I can't wait to see how this develops. Marvel will finally be getting a fighter that's on Injustice's level.

What we REALLY need to know is cross-play with PSN/Live/Steam? Everything else is on a lower tier of question to me until that is answered.

As someone who wasn't previously that thrilled about MvC, I think this look quite nice from a gameplay perspective. I can actually tell what's going on, unlike in MvC3. Of course if you are a fan of MvC3, I can understand why such a drastic change could be seen as a negative.

As for negatives about this. There's a couple of things.

The stage itself feels like it lacks things in the background, there just seems to be nothing at all going on in the stage, makes it look kinda empty and boring.

Graphically I think the game could do with getting lighting improved a bit. Someone like Ryu looks kinda flat with the all white outfit. The blue aura that we see Ryu and Iron man get also looks pretty meh. The faces of the characters also seems like they could be a bit more expressive, mainly judging by Ryu though (others are hard to tell).

Overall the trailer left me with a very positive first impression of the game though. Infinity gems seems to replace X-factor, which can only be an improvement. Captain Marvel is also looking fantastic, and oh buy if they make her at all like this in the MCU, then that movie will rock.

This is actually the most important question....But given that it's releasing on all both xbox and ps4, I doubt it :(

I'm not a fan of the "serious" art direction and music. I get why they're doing it - to reflect the style of all the MCU movies - but come on, this is a completely over-the-top video game where a bunch of weirdoes throw energy beams, infinite combos and Lego knock-offs at each other.

It should be bombastic and colorful, not gritty with a sense of impending doom.

Has to be a joke post.

The music direction is admittedly overwrought. Sounds like something out of Injustice. Obviously an attempt to be cinematic, but I'm not a fan.

The flat lighting makes it look stale and colorless like most of the MCU movies, and the infinity stone fart vortexes don't satisfactorily offset that.

Nothing that particularly bothers me too much at all tho, and it will only improve.

It is very disheartening to hear 3 vs 3 and assists are gone and most likely strategic team synergy which is a huge part of the enjoyment of these games.

However, I still very much like what I see and I'm sure I will enjoy the game immensely anyway. I can still enjoy a more subdued Marvel game cause it will still have the characters, story and fun. I hope the roster is really big and choosing your partner has more effect than just playing as two people. Still hyped.

I wonder how much this reflects the movie captain marvel

(And if the old ms marvel costume is an unlockable)

Do you mean power set? Movies tend to have more realistic and toned downot powers. The MCU even more down to earth. Although CM is crazy powerful, especially in Binary mode, I bet it won't be as over the top as this.

Costume? It may have elements, like the Halla star etc. But far more believable.

worst insult that has been hurled at MvC across all threads tbh

lol I'm fuckin' dyin at people gettin salty about that Injustice level comment

The Netherrealm games are ok but they've always been really stiff to me, Marvel is the GOAT

No assists are a little disappointing but my favorite VS. fighter (aside from the original MvC) is TvC so I think the game will still be right up my alley. I don't like the look they're going for but I haven't liked the way Capcom fighters have looked since they ditched 2D so it's expected.

Injustice was a pretty good game until the balance patches hit.

On the assists thing, I wonder if the Reality gem will work the same way as it did in MSH, in which case we kinda sorta get assists out of it.

Man I can't wait for Star-Lord and Gamora, I hope they have the full MCU Guardians team. Get some Drax up in here.

I'm actually curious about who they would go with if they can't squeeze every character from Guardians into the game.

Star-Lord is an obvious shoe-in at this point; but if we can't get all of the characters how many Guardians reps should we expect and which ones?

I'm so glad they lost the cel shaded look, I've always hated it. Of course we'll never get glorious sprites again, but those would be great.

I do hope we get Asura. We're probably never going to get another Asura's Wrath, so it would be nice to have him in another game. He fought Ryu and Akuma, let him in! I want my Six-Armed Vajra DT.

We've been told by Polygon/Eurogamer's sources that Groot would be in, along with Ant Man.

I liked what I saw in the trailer, but I'm not totally sold on it. There's far too little info on the game mechanics, and I need much more.

I don't think it looks bad, and 2v2 with no assists is not a dealbreaker for me.

MAKE IT CASUAL

...game doesnt sell any better

ITS NOT CASUAL ENOUGH, REMOVE ALL DEPTH AND ADD "HOLD "O" TO ATTACK"

..genius!!!!

I think that's a bit of an exaggeration, but I get your feelings.

MvC3+Ultimate actually doubled the success of MvC2 per Capcom's top sellers list. It met expectations.

So I'm a bit confused at the decision to downgrade to TvC/SFxT style when those games were commercial (and critically for SFxT) disappointments by comparison.

Probably because they're getting merced by DC and Netherrealm and are trying to find a way in on that money.

Edit:

Do we know how much Injustice sold? I've never seen sales figures..

That's true. I'm mistakenly conflating MK's success with Injustice's.

No... that isn't the point where MvC∞ is at all. That trailer was December 2014- the game released February 2016.

MvC∞ debuts December 2016... comes out mid-late 2017. That's nearly a year of dev time difference.

December 2016- late 2017 isn't that different than December 2014 - February 2016. One delay would make the titles equal.

Plus the upgrades happened a few months from December reveal. I assume that they will be reusing a lot of mvc3 assets to pad out the roster.

I'm still lukewarm on the more "realistic" art design but it looks good in motion. Nice pace to the action, supers look cool. Cautiously optimistic even with no assists.

Their aim should be to sell to the casual buyers in large numbers in the initial pack and keep the hardcore players buying add ons and playing the game for years.

Im wishing this game had assists in it because its marvel, but what I've seen isn't a bad fighter by any stretch so far. TVC looking speed, Marvel movesets, SFxTekken tag combos, some kind of buff system likened towards CVS grooves...this all sounds terrific together. It just lacks assists is the only thing that feels off. 2v2 isn't really an issue either honestly, but in a perfect world I feel it should've used ratio team building like Skullgirls and assists so as not to throw its roots under the bus for the dynamic switch.

I'll play the shit out of it and view it as its own thing. Never pays to try and play a game expecting it to somehow be its prequel. You have to take each as its own meta and title even if its part of a franchise otherwise you'll just disappoint yourself like the folks who bitched MVC3 wasn't MVC2 instead of just trying to learn what MVC3 was about. I intend to give MVCI a shot and learn what its about on its own terms.

Now, after viewing this trailer a trillion times, my final impressions and some things that are starting to make a bit more sense:

  • It's clear they're still working on lighting or textures or materials for these characters, and that's why people are getting the garish/in-cohesive impression of the looks. Look when they introduce the characters and see how much shinier Iron Man is and how much more detail is in Captain Marvel's model than the seemingly-taken-from-MvC3 model of Ryu. Seems like a case of they tried to make everyone look realistic, which benefits some characters more than others. It's not just that, though, it's a combination of that and...
  • Also part of what makes it garish is the blue glow characters temporarily get after being tagged in. Dunno why this is necessary, but perhaps there is a gameplay mechanic where you receive benefits after tagging?
  • Backgrounds, hit effects, and particle effects are leaps and bounds more detailed than in MvC3. Very SFV-esque in a lot of places.
  • Iron Man has seemingly a ton of new moves, like the wrist laser thing, but it's really hard to be sure because it happens so fast.
  • Ground bounces are still in.
  • Super flash looks alright, feel like it might get confusing with the Infinity flash (which is swirls instead of "wind" which is how the super flash looks)
  • Ryu says "power move" before he does a EWGF kind of attack that gives him the wallbounce. Perhaps this the rare activation of Infinity Stones that they are testing activation conditions for? It's also signified by an electric hit effect.
  • Captain Marvel's super looks INCREDIBLE with the way they turn her body into glass window into the galaxy. One of my all-time favourite aesthetics and I love when this effect is applied to characters (i.e. Thanos, Captain Universe).

Overall, it's a new game and I think it's wasted time expecting it to be MvC2/3. Assists are gone, but it's also kind of difficult to rationalize the need for assists when.. you can just tag the other character in and do the move you need right then and there, and be able to choose from their whole moveset. In some ways it's even like an extended custom assist. However, in the same way that I always criticized custom assists, having restrictions like characters being tied to specific assists actually encourage a different kind of creativity and team-building, and that is worthwhile to take into consideration.

I echo what many others have already said, which is that not only do we not know enough about how it plays (like we have no idea what the neutral is like in this game) and are still making a shit ton of inferences about what mechanics are there and aren't there, but there isn't anything wrong with a game that takes this format and bears the MvC name. A lot of MvC is still in there, and it's a departure that is acknowledged in name by the developers too, and not one that I'm willing to cast off because they've made some concessions for casual Marvel fans so that the broader audience might actually stick with this game for longer and it isn't half as intimidating or nebulous to learn as MvC2/3.
